A 2 car 4 post lift is one of the most common requests we get from dealership service managers trying to squeeze more throughput out of a fixed footprint, and the difference between a bay that flows and one that’s a daily headache almost always comes down to layout math done before the lift ever ships. Why a 2 Car 4 Post Lift Changes Your Bay Math

A standard 2-post lift takes a rectangular footprint and clears the floor entirely, but a 2 car 4 post lift is a different animal because you’re planning for two vehicles occupying the same vertical column of space at different heights. The lower vehicle sits on the shop floor between the runways or drives up onto them, while the upper vehicle is parked and stored on the runway deck itself. That means your bay isn’t just as wide as the lift footprint — it’s as tall as your ceiling allows, and every inch of headroom above the top runway matters for the vehicle parked up there.

Most dealership service departments we quote are working with 12 to 16 foot ceilings, and that ceiling height directly dictates whether you’re buying a lift with an 80-inch rise or a 90-plus-inch rise. We always tell service managers to measure to the lowest obstruction in the bay — sprinkler heads, HVAC ductwork, light fixtures — not just the roof deck, because that lowest point is your real ceiling.

Runway Width and Column Spacing for a Two-Bay Layout

Most commercial-grade 4 post units run somewhere between 12 and 14 feet wide overall, with runway decks in the 43 to 50 inch range depending on the model. For a dealership running full-size trucks and SUVs alongside sedans, we lean toward the wider runway option so techs aren’t fighting mirror clearance every time they drive on. Column-to-column width matters just as much — you want enough clearance on both sides for a technician to walk comfortably with a cart or a rolling jack without squeezing past the posts.

When we lay out a two-bay dealership install, we typically plan for at least 12 feet of clear width per lift, plus another 3 to 4 feet of buffer between adjacent lifts so doors can open and techs can maneuver. Drive-through length also matters since many dealership 4-post units are 18 to 20 feet long deck to deck. Get the length wrong and you’ll have bumpers hanging past the end ramps, which nobody wants during a busy service day.

Approach Angle and Drive-On Ramps

The approach ramps at the end of the runways determine how easily a low-clearance sports coupe or a lifted truck can drive on without scraping. We spec longer, lower-angle ramps for dealerships that service a wide mix of vehicles, since a single steep ramp set works fine for trucks but can be brutal on a lowered sedan’s front splitter. Some 4 post lift models offer optional flip-up extension ramps that stretch the approach length without adding permanent floor footprint, which is worth asking about if your bay entrance is tight.

We also factor in the drive-in direction relative to the bay door. If techs have to make a sharp turn to line up with the runways, that adds time to every single vehicle cycle, multiplied across a full day of appointments. Whenever possible we orient the lift so the natural path from the bay door to the runways is close to a straight line. It seems like a small thing until you’ve watched a tech creep a vehicle onto a runway at an angle a dozen times in one shift.

Storage Above, Service Below: Workflow in Practice

The whole appeal of a 2 car 4 post lift in a dealership setting is running two jobs in parallel — one vehicle parked and raised out of the way, another being serviced on the shop floor or on a rolling jack underneath. That only works if the lift height leaves enough clearance below for a technician to stand upright and roll a floor jack or transmission jack underneath the raised vehicle. We generally recommend a minimum of 76 to 78 inches of clearance under the lowest point of the raised vehicle for comfortable underneath work.

Service managers should also think about how techs will get up onto the runway deck to service the stored vehicle when needed. Many 4-post models pair with a rolling jack or a sliding bridge jack that rides between the runways, letting a tech lift one axle of the parked vehicle for tire or brake work without lowering the whole unit. Planning for that jack’s storage and travel path is part of the bay layout too, not an afterthought.

Real Dimensions From a Waterloo Dealership Install

On the Waterloo project, the service department had roughly 14-foot ceilings and a bay that was about 16 feet wide by 32 feet deep after accounting for a support column near the back wall. We spec’d a 9,000 lb 4 post lift with an overall footprint just under 12 feet wide, leaving enough shoulder room on both sides for parts carts to pass. The runway length left about 3 feet of buffer at each end, which turned out to matter the first week when a longer crew-cab pickup came through for an oil change.

We also confirmed the floor was standard broom-finished concrete at sufficient thickness for anchor bolts, since 4-post units distribute load through the columns rather than needing deep core anchors like some 2-post commercial lifts. That kept the install straightforward — anchor the columns, level the runways, run the hydraulics, and test-cycle empty before loading the first vehicle.

Choosing Capacity: 8,000 vs 9,000 vs 10,000 Lb Ratings

Dealerships servicing mostly passenger cars and light trucks are usually well covered at 8,000 to 9,000 lbs, but if your lot regularly turns over heavier trucks, vans, or SUVs with towing packages, we push customers toward the 10,000 lb rating for margin. It costs relatively little extra at purchase time and it means you never have to think twice about what rolls onto the runway. We’ve had more than one service manager tell us they wished they’d gone up a capacity tier after their inventory mix shifted toward larger trucks.

Capacity rating also affects how the lift handles asymmetric loads, like a vehicle parked with weight shifted toward one end for engine work. A 2 car 4 post lift rated with margin above your heaviest expected vehicle gives you more confidence during those edge cases, and it extends the working life of the hydraulic cylinders and cables since they aren’t running at their rated max on every cycle.
