Like a lot of mobile mechanics, our customer’s shop building wasn’t built with a lift in mind — it was a garage that had been adapted over time into a working shop space. He needed to keep a vehicle elevated for wheel bearing service and other underbody work, while also having a place to park a second car without blocking his own driveway or his tools. This is where the project almost hit a wall. We measured to the lowest point in the bay, not just the peak of the roofline, because that’s what actually matters once the lift columns and safety locks are in place.

In a home-shop layout like this one, that often means the lift can’t simply go in the center of the bay; it has to be offset to leave a workable turning radius. Getting this wrong is one of the most common mistakes we see with DIY installs, and it’s exactly why an on-site review before delivery matters as much as the lift specs themselves.

Sizing Capacity for Mobile Mechanic Work

Mobile mechanics see a wide range of vehicles, from compact sedans to heavier trucks and SUVs used for towing. We recommended a 9,000 lb capacity 2 car 4 post lift for this install, which covers the vast majority of daily driver and work-truck wheel bearing jobs with room to spare. We used manufacturer-spec anchors rated for the local concrete strength and torqued everything to spec before running the lift through a full test cycle empty, then loaded, before handing it over.

The Finished Install and What We’d Tell Other Buyers

The finished 2 car 4 post lift gave our customer exactly what he needed: a place to elevate vehicles for wheel bearing service and other underbody jobs, plus storage for a second car without cluttering his driveway. The lower-profile model solved the ceiling height problem, the offset placement solved the door swing issue, and the accessory package matched how he actually planned to use the shop day to day.
