A 2 post car lift is only as good as the bay it lives in, and nowhere does that show up faster than in an overlanding build shop where a lifted Tacoma with 37s and a rear bumper the size of a dining table has to swing in, park square, and come back off the lift without knocking over a light rack. We installed a two-poster last fall for a builder in Marion who does wheel bearing service, axle work, and full-frame overlanding conversions out of a 40-by-60 pole barn. His question was simple: how do we lay out this bay so a 6,500-pound rig on 37-inch tires works cleanly without me tripping over lines every service? Here is the case study.

The Building And The Vehicle Mix
The Marion shop is a 40-foot-wide by 60-foot-deep pole building with 16-foot side walls and a 14-foot ceiling at the lowest truss. The 12-foot overhead door sits in the middle of the short wall. The slab is a 5-inch commercial pour from 2018 at 4,000 psi — one of the cleanest bases we have worked with. His vehicle mix is heavy Toyotas: 3rd and 4th gen 4Runners, first-and-second-gen Tacomas, and the occasional 100-series Land Cruiser, all with lift kits, larger tires, and heavy aftermarket bumpers.
Curb weights are 5,500 to 6,800 pounds fully rigged. That mix pushed us toward a 12,000-pound-capacity two-poster instead of the usual 10K, because he sees loaded curb weights near the ceiling of a 10K rating on a bad month. Building geometry matters more than most owners appreciate. His pole barn has intermediate columns down each side wall at 12-foot centers, so we could not simply plunk the lift anywhere. We measured wall-to-wall, column-to-column, and gutter-to-gutter before drawing anything, and we asked him to bring us the tallest and widest vehicle he owned to walk through the empty bay while we chalked footprints.
Traffic Flow And Column Position
The single biggest 2 post car lift layout mistake we see is putting the lift in the center of the bay because the center feels right. It usually is not. Traffic flow — how you drive in, park, and get on the arms — dictates column placement more than symmetry does. In Marion the owner drives customer rigs in from the west door, works on them, and rolls them out the east double door onto his back gravel. That flow made a symmetric-centered layout wrong.
We shifted the lift 22 inches east of the geometric center so his front column would clear his rolling tool cart, his welder, and his air line drop from the truss. That put the driver-side column against the natural walking path he already used from his parts bench. Twenty-two inches of shift changed his workday. It meant he could still walk from parts bench to driver door with a rig on the lift, tool cart and all, and never had to duck around a column mid-service. Chalk your walking paths before you pour anchors and you will save yourself a decade of small irritations that compound into hating a machine that is not actually the problem.
Wheel Bearing Service: Why The Arms Matter
Wheel bearing work on lifted Toyotas is a specific problem. You need clear wheel-off access, room for a slide-hammer or hub-puller, and enough envelope around the knuckle for a torque wrench to swing without hitting an arm. That means arm length and arm swing matter more than they do for oil-change work. A 2 post car lift with short front arms and a wide inswing will lock you into narrow lift points and make bearing service miserable on a 4Runner with a bumper that overhangs the frame by nine inches.
We spec’d 3-stage front arms with a 42-inch outer reach and short rear arms because the shop’s rigs are all front-heavy with rear bumpers that block short arms from swinging back. Rubber block adapters at three heights and screw-pad extenders let him reach factory pinch points cleanly through 4-inch and 6-inch lift kits. For hub-and-bearing service on a 4th gen 4Runner, that arm package gives him full torque-arm swing around the lower ball joint without moving the rig once it is up. Small detail, huge time saver. Over a year of bearing services alone the arm-package upgrade paid for itself three times over.
Air, Electric, And Overhead Utilities
Utility routing on a 2 post car lift bay is where most builders lose money on a well-planned lift. Air lines dropping from the ceiling need to clear the top of the lift’s overhead safety shutoff bar without kinking or catching on it. Electric drops should feed the operator side and not cross the drive path. In Marion we mapped the ceiling drops first, then set column position second, and asked him to move his air compressor location to shorten the run.
He was originally going to drop a coil at each front corner. We convinced him to run a hard line along the truss to a single retractable reel positioned between the columns, three feet forward of the arm swing envelope. That gave him the same reach at every corner of the vehicle without cluttering the drive path. On the electric side, we ran a dedicated 30-amp 240-volt circuit to the operator column and put the shop lights on a separate circuit so an overhead trip never leaves him working on a raised rig by phone flashlight. All of this was decided in a two-hour walkthrough before the first anchor bolt hit concrete. It is the cheapest planning any shop owner ever pays for.
Ceiling Height Math For Overlanding Rigs
Overlanding rigs eat ceiling height. A stock 4Runner is 71 inches tall. Add a 3-inch lift, 33-inch tires, and a full roof rack with 46-inch light bar and awning, and you can add 18 inches to that number easily. That means the roof of the vehicle at maximum lift height needs to clear whatever the ceiling gives you. In Marion’s 14-foot bay, a fully-rigged 4Runner at six feet of lift crown was 89 inches plus 72 inches of lift equals 161 inches — just under his 168-inch ceiling.
That is tight. If he ever bought a lifted Sequoia the math would break, so we sized the arm package to allow lower service heights when tall vehicles come through and picked a clearfloor lift with a folding overhead bar that clears 12 feet 6 inches when needed. Do the math with your worst-case rig, not your average one, or you will have a machine that stops the day the wrong customer rolls up. Ceiling clearance is the single most common reason we see owners regret their purchase after year two, and it is completely avoidable if you measure honestly before you order.
What The Marion Install Looks Like Today
Six months in, the Marion bay runs 12 to 15 vehicles a week on the two-poster and about 20 hours a week of wheel bearing, axle, and knuckle work. The 22-inch column shift, the arm package, and the utility routing are all things he says he stops noticing — which is the goal. Good layout is invisible; bad layout announces itself every service.
