A body shop foreman in northern Missouri called us last spring with a problem that had nothing to do with hydraulics: his newest 2 post car lift was installed in the wrong spot, and every suspension job in that bay turned into a shuffle of rolling jacks, spring compressors, and impact hoses tangled around a column. The lift worked fine. The bay didn’t. That’s the part nobody tells you when you’re shopping columns and capacities. We’re based in Ames, Iowa, and we install and service lifts across Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and the Dakotas, so we’ve walked a lot of bays that were laid out on a napkin. Start With the Bay, Not the Brochure

Most buyers do this backwards. They find a model they like, order it, and then discover the columns land eighteen inches from a support post or the overhead beam sits under a low header. Measure first. You need the clear width of the bay wall to wall, the ceiling height at its lowest obstruction (not the peak), the door opening height, and the distance from the intended column centerline to any wall, bench, or air line drop. Write those four numbers down before you look at a single spec sheet.

For a typical 10,000 lb two-post in a body shop, we like to see at least 12 feet of clear width per bay, and 14 is a lot more comfortable when you’re pulling struts. Column spacing on most symmetric models runs around 11 to 12 feet between posts, and you need working room outboard of each column for a technician to stand, kneel, and swing a bar. A foreman we work with in northern Missouri ended up giving up one bay out of five to widen the other four. Production went up. That math surprises people, but it shouldn’t — a cramped bay costs you minutes on every single job, and minutes compound across a year of tickets.

Overhead Versus Baseplate for a 2 Post Car Lift

This is the first real fork in the road. An overhead-style unit ties the two columns together with a top beam that carries the equalization cables and a shutoff bar. A baseplate model runs the cables through a floor plate between the columns instead. Both are proven designs. The choice usually comes down to what’s above you and what’s under you.

If your ceiling is under about 12 feet, or you have ductwork, a garage door track, radiant tube heat, or a mezzanine in the way, baseplate is often the only sane answer. We had a customer in North Dakota with a 139-inch maximum height who simply could not run an overhead unit — baseplate solved it in an afternoon. The tradeoff is that plate on the floor: you’ll roll a transmission jack over it, you’ll sweep around it, and in a body shop where you’re dragging sanders and cords all day it becomes one more thing in the path. Overhead keeps the floor completely clear, which is why most production shops prefer it when the building allows. If you have the height, go overhead. If you don’t, don’t force it — a baseplate lift installed correctly is far better than an overhead unit crammed under a low header with no room for the shutoff bar to do its job.

Symmetric or Asymmetric: What Suspension Work Actually Needs

Symmetric means the columns face each other directly and the four arms are roughly equal length, centering the vehicle between the posts. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses shorter front arms, setting the vehicle back so the doors clear the posts. For suspension and shock replacement, we usually steer shops toward asymmetric or a versymmetric-style arm set — you’re in and out of the driver’s door constantly checking ride height, cycling the steering, and setting the vehicle down onto a strut.

That said, symmetric has a real advantage on heavier and longer vehicles, which matters if you’re catching three-quarter-ton pickups and full-size vans. The load sits more evenly across both columns. Plenty of shops run a mix: a symmetric bay for trucks and an asymmetric bay for cars and crossovers. If you only get one, and your work order mix is mostly passenger vehicles and half-ton trucks, asymmetric arms will save you more aggravation. Whichever way you go, pay attention to minimum pad height. Drop-end or telescoping screw pads matter enormously on lowered cars and modern crossovers with plastic rocker cladding, and a set of truck adapters lives permanently in the drawer of every good suspension bay.

Concrete: The Spec Nobody Wants to Hear

We get calls every month from someone who bought a lift online and then found out their slab won’t hold it. A customer down in Unionville, Missouri told us his concrete was “about five inches, maybe less.” That “maybe less” is the whole conversation. Most 10,000 lb two-post manufacturers call for a minimum of 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with no cracks or seams within a set distance of the anchor pattern. Some 12,000 and 15,000 lb units want 6 inches or more.

Here’s what we tell people: core drill it or hire someone to. A two-inch core sample costs a fraction of what a failed anchor costs. If the slab is thin, you don’t have to pour a whole new floor — cutting and pouring a properly reinforced footing pad under each column is a common, affordable fix, and we’ve specced dozens of them. Watch for control joints too. Anchors set too close to a joint or an edge lose a huge amount of holding power, and that’s exactly where a column starts to walk over a few thousand cycles. Old shop floors in northern Missouri and southern Iowa are frequently patchwork — three pours from three decades. Know what you’re anchoring into before the truck shows up.

Power, Air, and Where the Hoses Live

Layout isn’t just concrete and clearance. Decide before installation which column carries the power unit, because that determines where your electrical drop goes and which side of the bay stays clean. Most two-post units come with a single-phase 208-230V motor drawing a 30-amp circuit, though three-phase options exist and are worth it if you already have three-phase service in the building. Do not run a lift on an undersized extension cord or a shared circuit — you’ll cook the motor and void the warranty in the same afternoon.

Think about air and light next. A reel-mounted air hose dropped between the columns beats a hose snaking across the floor, and a pair of LED strips mounted high on the outside of each column will do more for the quality of your suspension work than any tool you buy this year. Keep the electrical and hydraulic side of the lift on the wall side of the bay when you can, so the open side stays free for a parts cart or a strut compressor. And leave yourself a clear path for a floor jack to roll in under the vehicle from the rear. Small stuff, but these are the details that separate a bay that flows from one that fights you. Budget, Tiers, and What You Actually Get

Two-post pricing sorts into rough tiers. Entry-level import units land in the low four figures and are fine for light-duty and hobby use. Mid-tier commercial models — the ones most independent shops buy — run into the mid four figures and bring better cylinders, better arm restraints, and a parts pipeline that will still exist in ten years. Premium units from Rotary and Challenger sit above that and are what we recommend for a production body shop running a lift eight hours a day. Installation, freight, and anchors are separate line items, and anyone who quotes you a single number without asking about your slab is guessing.

What you’re really buying at the higher tiers is uptime and parts availability. When a cheap unit stops lifting, you often find out the importer no longer stocks that cylinder or that carriage slider. Installation, Inspection, and Getting It Right the First Time

A 2 post car lift is not a weekend project unless you’ve done a few. The columns need to be plumb within a tight tolerance, the cables need to be equalized so both carriages rise together, the arm restraints need to engage, and the anchors need to be torqued to spec and re-torqued after the first load cycles. We’ve been called out to fix more owner installs than we can count, and the common failures are always the same three: out-of-plumb columns, under-torqued anchors, and cable tension never set properly.

We install across a wide radius from Ames, and we also ship equipment to customers who genuinely don’t need us on site — some folks have a forklift, a good crew, and the patience to follow a manual. That’s fine. What we ask is that you plan an ANSI/ALI-style inspection after the first month and annually after that. Check the cables for broken strands, the arm restraint gears for wear, the safety locks for clean engagement at every position, and the cylinder for weeping. Suspension work puts uneven loads on a lift constantly — you’ll unbolt one whole corner of a vehicle’s weight-bearing structure and the load shifts. That’s normal, and a well-installed, well-maintained 2 post car lift handles it without complaint for two decades. One that was rushed into a thin slab won’t.
