A service manager at a franchise dealership about twenty minutes north of the Missouri line called us last spring with a problem that had nothing to do with hydraulics and everything to do with geometry. His techs were fighting exhaust work on late-model trucks because the bays were equipped with drive-on equipment that buried the entire underside behind runways. He wanted a 2 post car lift in three of the six bays, and he wanted to know which brands would still have parts available in fifteen years. That second question is the one nobody asks until a cylinder blows. We spent an afternoon with a tape measure, a concrete core report, and a parts catalog, and this article is essentially that conversation written down.

Why Exhaust and Driveline Work Drives the Decision

Drive-on equipment is wonderful for alignments, storage, and quick service. It is miserable for exhaust and driveline work. The runways sit directly under the rockers and the frame rails, which is exactly where a tech needs to swing a torch, drop a driveshaft, or wrestle a transfer case out of a four-wheel-drive truck. Every time a tech has to work around a runway instead of through open air, that job takes longer. Multiply fifteen extra minutes across a dealership’s warranty exhaust and driveline volume and you are losing real hours every month.

Swing arms change that completely. With the vehicle picked up at four pad points, the entire underbody is open from bumper to bumper. A tech can stand under a Super Duty and walk the full length of the exhaust without ducking around structure. That is the single biggest reason shops that started with drive-on equipment come back and add posts later. At the dealership near the border, we swapped three bays and left three drive-on bays for alignment and storage. Six months in, the service manager told us the exhaust and driveline jobs had migrated almost entirely to the new bays without anyone being told to do it. Techs vote with their feet. When the access is better, the work goes where the access is.

Brand History Actually Matters for Parts

There is a reason we keep coming back to two brands for commercial work. Rotary has been building lifts in the United States since the 1920s and effectively invented the modern hydraulic automotive lift. Challenger has been at it since the 1980s and built a reputation on heavy structural steel and straightforward serviceability. Both companies keep long parts tails. We can still source carriage assemblies, arm restraint gears, cable sheaves, and cylinder seal kits for units that went in during the Reagan administration. That is not marketing copy, that is a Tuesday for our parts department.

Contrast that with the churn brands. We get calls constantly about equipment sold under a name that existed for four years, got rebadged twice, and now has no serial number registry anywhere. The owner has a working structure and a dead power unit, and there is no cross-reference for the cylinder bore or the safety lock geometry. Sometimes we can fabricate around it. Sometimes we tell them honestly that a replacement is cheaper than a resurrection. When a dealership asks us what to buy, we are not thinking about this year’s price. We are thinking about the phone call in 2038 when a carriage bearing lets go and somebody needs a part number. Brand history is a proxy for whether that call gets answered.

Real Dimensions: Ceiling, Column, and Drive-Thru

Numbers first, because this is where projects fall apart. A standard clearfloor overhead unit needs roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling, and 12 feet 6 inches is comfortable. The overhead beam itself sits at the top of the columns and carries the equalizer cables, so anything hanging below your joists — a unit heater, a door track, a light fixture, a sprinkler line — has to be measured, not eyeballed. We had one shop with a listed 139-inch maximum height who assumed that was plenty. It was, barely, until the sectional door track was factored in and the usable envelope dropped under 11 feet.

If overhead does not work, a baseplate configuration moves the crossover hoses and cables into a low channel at floor level and drops the height requirement to roughly the column height plus a few inches of clearance. You give up a perfectly flat floor and you accept driving over a low ramp, but you gain the ability to install in a building with 10-foot ceilings. Then there is drive-thru width. Most symmetric commercial units land between 108 and 120 inches between columns, and asymmetric or expandable top beam designs let you tune that. On the dealership job, we set the columns to give a 121-inch drive-thru so the shop’s dually trucks could roll straight through without a spotter. Measure the widest vehicle you actually service, add mirror clearance, then pick the configuration.

Concrete Is the Real Spec Sheet

Every column on a two post unit transfers the entire load into the floor through anchor bolts. Manufacturers typically call for a minimum of 4 to 4.25 inches of cured concrete at 3,000 psi, with more depth required for higher capacities. Around here, a lot of shop floors were poured in the 1970s at a nominal 4 inches, which in practice means 3.5 inches in the low spots. We core-test when there is any doubt. On the border dealership, the original 1978 slab tested at 4.5 inches in two bays and 3.25 in the third, so we cut and poured a reinforced pad for that bay before anything got anchored.

Cutting a pad is not a disaster and it is not expensive relative to the equipment. What is expensive is anchoring into thin concrete, watching the anchors work loose over two years of cycles, and then discovering it during a load. We have been called to shops where the anchor holes had spalled out into cones the size of a coffee can. That is a structural failure waiting for a bad day. A proper pad — typically 4 feet by 4 feet minimum per column, 8 inches deep, with rebar mat and a keyed joint to the existing slab — costs a fraction of a liability claim and it lasts as long as the building. If your slab is questionable, get it tested before you order anything. We would rather delay an install a week than anchor into something we do not trust.

What the Parts Pipeline Looks Like From Iowa

We stock parts in Iowa specifically because downtime math is brutal for a shop with three bays. A dealership near the state line that loses a bay for eight business days waiting on a freight shipment from a coast has lost a meaningful chunk of a month’s labor capacity. So we carry the failure-prone items: equalizer cables in common lengths, cylinder seal kits, power unit motors in single and three phase, arm restraint gear sets, lock release cables, sheaves, and pad assemblies. Most of what actually breaks on a 2 post car lift is on that list.

The pipeline works because we buy from the manufacturers directly and we know the serial number logic. Give us a nameplate photo and a model number and we can usually identify the right part on the first call. If you are running an older unit and the tag is gone, we work backward through cylinder dimensions, column profile, and lock spacing. It is not glamorous, but it is why our repeat customers do not shop around. We have also learned which parts to keep in duplicate. Cables and seal kits are the two things that will strand a shop, so we hold depth on those. For anything else, our supplier relationships get freight moving the same day in most cases. Capacity, Configuration, and Buying for Ten Years Out

The question we ask every dealership and independent shop is not what they lift today. It is what they will lift in eight years. A shop servicing sedans and half-tons today may be servicing three-quarter-ton diesel pickups and cargo vans by the time the equipment is halfway through its life. A 10,000 lb unit handles the vast majority of light-duty vehicles with margin. A 12,000 or 15,000 lb unit gives you room for heavier trucks and the taller lift heights that come with the bigger columns.

Configuration matters just as much as capacity. Symmetric designs center the vehicle between the columns and are the right answer for trucks and vans where you want equal arm reach and maximum stability. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and set the vehicle back so the doors clear the posts, which is a real quality-of-life gain for interior work on cars. Some models split the difference with a versymmetric arm set. A 2 post car lift is a fifteen-to-twenty-five-year purchase if you buy well and maintain it, so the incremental cost of stepping up a capacity tier or adding an expandable top beam is small against the years you will own it. When we quote a shop, we quote what fits the building and the vehicle mix, and we tell them where we would spend the extra money and where we would not. That is the whole job.

Installation, Inspection, and the First Year

Installation on a two post is a day’s work for a two-person crew when the site is ready. Layout, core check, drilling, setting columns, plumbing the crossover, wiring the power unit, cable tensioning, lock synchronization, and a full load test. The part most people underestimate is cable tension and lock sync. If the carriages are not level to each other, the safety locks will not engage in the same tooth and you will hear it every time the unit sets down. We adjust until it is right, then we cycle it loaded and check again.

After that, the maintenance list is short and non-negotiable. Check cable tension and inspect for broken strands monthly. Grease the carriage slides and arm pivots on the schedule in the manual. Watch the fluid level and change it on the interval. Verify that the arm restraints engage and the locks drop into every tooth. Once a year, get a formal ANSI/ALI inspection — required in commercial settings, smart everywhere. The dealership near the border added their new bays to an annual inspection rotation with the rest of their equipment and has not had an unplanned shutdown since.
