A body shop foreman in western Illinois walked us through his building last spring with a tape measure and a real problem: he had two open bays, a 16-foot overhead door, a loft on one side and a block wall on the other, and he wanted a 2 post car lift in each bay without turning the shop into a place where nobody could open a car door. He was doing mostly oil changes and fluid service between collision jobs, so speed mattered more than capacity. This guide is basically the conversation we had, in order — bay layout first, then concrete, then capacity and configuration, then the workflow details that decide whether you love the setup or fight it every day.

Measure the Bay Before You Look at a Single Model

Almost every bad lift purchase we get called out to fix started with somebody picking a model and then trying to make the building work. Do it the other way around. You need four numbers written down: usable ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, bay width between walls or between adjacent lift columns, concrete thickness and age, and the width of the door you will drive through. That last one catches people — we quoted a shop with a 16-foot door and plenty of room in the bay itself, but a support post eight feet inside the door meant vehicles had to angle in, which killed the drive-thru approach on the left column.

Ceiling height is the fork in the road. Clear-floor overhead models need roughly 12 feet minimum for a 10,000 lb unit, and more if you want to raise tall trucks to full height. If your ceiling is 11 to 12 feet, you are looking at either a low-ceiling overhead variant or a baseplate model. We had a homeowner in the Ankeny area with 11 to 12 feet and mostly maintenance work who ended up perfectly happy on a baseplate. Bay width should give you at least 12 feet per lift for comfortable door swing, and 14 is better if you are moving carts and drain pans around constantly. Anything tighter and a 2 post car lift becomes a daily wrestling match.

Concrete: The Spec Nobody Wants to Hear

The manufacturer’s anchor spec is not a suggestion, and it is the one number people try to negotiate with us. Most 10,000 lb two-post models call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and several call for more. The problem is that “four inches” in an older farm shop or a converted building often means four inches in the middle of the slab and two and a half at the edge where somebody poured a thin apron. A caller in northern Missouri told us his floor was “about five inches, maybe less,” which in our experience means core-drill it and find out.

Testing is cheap compared to the alternative. You can core a one-inch test hole at each proposed anchor location, or hire someone to do a set of cores if you are outfitting multiple bays. If the slab is too thin, the fix is a pour-back: saw-cut a pad roughly four by four feet and a foot deep under each column, tie in rebar, and pour new mix. That runs a few hundred to low four figures per column depending on who does the work and how much cure time you can afford. It is not glamorous and it is not optional. We have been called to shops where the previous installer anchored into thin slab and the concrete cracked in a fan pattern around the base plate within a year. A 2 post car lift transfers everything through those anchors, and there is no safety factor in a slab that is not there.

Capacity: Size for the Heaviest Thing, Not the Usual Thing

The number we hear most is 10,000 pounds, and for a body shop doing cars, crossovers and half-ton trucks, that is genuinely the right call. It covers everything a collision shop rolls through the door with a comfortable margin, and it is the highest-volume capacity in the industry so parts and service are easy to get anywhere. Where we push back is when somebody says their heaviest vehicle is 6,000 pounds and then mentions, ten minutes later, that they also service the owner’s three-quarter-ton and occasionally a dually with a service body.

Capacity ratings on a two-post assume the load is distributed reasonably across all four arms. A crew cab pickup puts far more weight forward than a sedan does, and a work truck with a loaded bed shifts it back. If a meaningful share of your work is trucks, step to 12,000 or 15,000. Shops that service fleet trucks or larger vans should be looking at 15,000 to 18,000 lb models with taller columns and longer arms. On the other end, if you are a home shop or a hobbyist working on an older car with a 14-foot ceiling and no truck traffic, a 9,000 or 10,000 lb model with a modest price tag is completely appropriate. Symmetric, Asymmetric, and Which One Fits Your Workflow

Symmetric lifts have columns facing each other directly with arms of equal length, and they center the vehicle between the posts. That is the strongest, most balanced arrangement, and it is what you want for trucks and vans. The downside in a body shop is door clearance: on a long sedan, the doors hit the columns and technicians end up climbing in through a half-open door twenty times a day.

Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use shorter front arms and longer rear arms, which sets the vehicle back so the doors clear. For a shop doing oil changes and fluid service, that door access is worth real money in time saved. There is also a middle path — several manufacturers build versatile-arm models with expandable top beams and telescoping arms that let you run either configuration depending on what is on the lift that day. We have seen models with double-telescoping screw pads and drop-end arms that handle both a lowered coupe and a lifted pickup without swapping adapters, which is exactly what a mixed-work shop wants. When you are comparing a 2 post car lift on paper, look hard at the arm range and pad height numbers, not just the capacity sticker. Minimum pad height determines whether you can even get under a low car, and maximum screw-pad extension determines whether you can reach the frame on a body-on-frame truck.

Laying Out the Bay for Fluid Service Speed

Once the lift is picked, the layout around it decides your cycle time. For oil changes and fluid service, everything the tech touches should be within one step of the driver’s side front column. That means the drain evacuator, the filter stock, the funnel and the shop light. Mounting a hose reel for air and one for bulk oil directly above the bay eliminates the walk that costs you three minutes a car. Over a hundred cars a month, that is five hours you get back.

Column placement relative to the door matters too. Set the lift so a car can roll straight in and stop with the center of gravity between the posts without any jockeying. Mark the floor with tape or paint at the correct stopping point — sounds simple, saves a fifteen-second reposition every single time. Leave three feet of clear walkway behind the rear column so nobody has to squeeze past a raised car with an oil drain in hand. And think about where the power unit lives; on most two-post installs it mounts to one column, and if that puts the reservoir fill cap behind a parts cart, checking fluid stops happening. The foreman in western Illinois ended up flipping his second bay’s orientation so both power units faced the center aisle, which meant one walk to check both. Small choice, real payoff. Install, Budget Tiers, and What Delivery Really Involves

Budget honestly. A solid entry-level 10,000 lb two-post from a reputable brand lands in the low-to-mid four figures for the equipment alone. Mid-tier commercial models with better power units, thicker columns and stronger warranties run mid four figures to low five figures. Professional installation typically adds several hundred to around fifteen hundred per lift depending on travel, anchor work and whether an electrician needs to run a dedicated circuit. Delivery is where surprises happen. Two-post lifts ship on a freight truck as a crated pallet weighing well over a thousand pounds, and most carriers deliver curbside with no liftgate unless you pay for one. If you have a forklift or a skid steer, say so when you order and you will save money. If you do not, arrange a liftgate up front rather than standing in the driveway with a driver on a clock. Plenty of buyers handle their own install — one caller in North Dakota specifically did not want install service and just needed the right baseplate model shipped — and that is fine if you have the equipment and read the manual carefully. But have a professional verify anchor torque and lock function before the first vehicle goes up.
