On a professional lift, the front arms are three-stage, meaning they telescope through three sections and can reach both a very short-wheelbase sports car and a very long-wheelbase crew-cab pickup from the same lift position. The rear arms are typically two-stage, since the rear pickup point has less variation across vehicles. This front-three-rear-two geometry is the industry standard for a reason: it accommodates roughly 95% of vehicles that roll into a mixed-use shop without any repositioning tricks. If your shop is going to see a mix of body work — from Miatas to F-350 dually crew cabs — the three-stage front arms are non-negotiable. Skip that spec and you will be positioning and repositioning vehicles constantly, adding minutes to every job. The good news: all three major brands’ 10K-and-up commercial lifts ship with three-stage front arms by default. Just verify on the invoice before you sign. It is one line item, easy to miss, and impossible to change after the fact.
Clear-floor overhead versus baseplate for bay layout
The final major configuration decision is overhead versus baseplate. An overhead lift — sometimes called clear-floor — has the safety-shutoff bar running across the top of the columns, up above the vehicle. The floor between the columns is completely clear. A baseplate lift has a bar running across the floor between the columns instead, so the hydraulic and safety cables can run under the floor bar rather than overhead. Baseplate lifts are used when the ceiling is too low for the overhead cross-bar geometry to fit — usually meaning ceilings below about eleven feet in most brand configurations.
For a body shop, the almost-universal answer is clear-floor overhead if the ceiling allows it. Body work involves rolling tool carts, welding equipment, and large sheet-metal pieces through the bay, and every one of those things wants a completely clear floor between the columns. A baseplate bar becomes a trip hazard, a rolling-cart stopper, and a headache. Only go baseplate if the ceiling honestly requires it — that is, if you have a hard cap under eleven feet and cannot raise it. Measure carefully. The lift’s minimum ceiling requirement is on the spec sheet, and it usually calls for a foot of clearance above the highest point of the safety bar with a truck raised to full height.
