Sizing your first 2 post car lift for a home garage
The number every home buyer wants first is capacity, and 90 percent of home garages are honestly served by a 10,000 lb 2 post car lift. A modern Ram 1500 crew cab tops out around 5,500 lbs empty. A loaded Suburban is under 7,000. A tri-five Chevy restoration project is under 4,000. Unless you’re planning to park a Ford F-350 dually on it, 10K is not the limitation — the limitation is the arm reach and rise height, not the column rating. Buying a 15K lift for a Mustang means you’re paying for beam and column steel you’ll never load.
What we do push home buyers to spec up on is the arm design. Three-stage front arms with drop-ends will reach the factory pickup points on a low modern sedan and a lifted pickup out of the same bay. Two-stage plate-style arms save two hundred dollars and turn every rotor swap on a Miata into a puzzle. If your fleet ever changes — you sell the Mustang and get a Silverado — three-stage arms mean the 2 post car lift doesn’t need to change with it. That option-sheet upgrade is the one we almost never regret specifying.
Ceiling height, concrete, and the two questions we ask first
Before we quote a 2 post car lift for a home shop, we ask two questions: how tall is the ceiling at the beam, and how thick is the slab. Ceiling height determines rise height and overhead versus baseplate. A standard overhead lift needs about 12 feet of clearance to raise a tall pickup and still fit the safety bar and crossmember. On a 4-post the wheels sit on the runway, so every brake job requires a rolling bridge jack, and every rotor swap becomes a two-tool routine — jack up on the bridge, block, then work. On a two-post the wheels hang free the moment the lift comes up, and you’re at a comfortable standing height in front of the caliper. For a homeowner who mostly wrenches on the weekend, that difference is the whole point.
Rotor swaps expose the other spec that matters for a home 2 post car lift: rise height. Cheap lifts advertise 71 inches at the pad but only deliver that on the tallest arm setting; drop the arms to reach a low Mustang’s factory pinch weld and the actual rise drops to 66 or 67 inches. You end up crouched under a car you were supposed to stand under. A quality domestic lift with adjustable pad extensions gives you 74 to 75 inches at the pinch weld across the whole arm-length range, and that four inches is the difference between a comfortable weekend job and a lower-back injury.
Symmetric versus asymmetric for a home garage
Symmetric lifts put the columns dead-center on the vehicle and split the weight fifty-fifty. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns back roughly 30 degrees so the door opens without hitting the post. For a home garage the honest recommendation is symmetric baseplate if your ceiling is under 11 feet and you’re mostly working on trucks and SUVs — door clearance is fine because there’s no adjacent bay. For a mixed fleet with a lower car in the mix, or a garage bay under 22 feet wide, asymmetric earns its keep because you’ll actually get in and out of the car without the door bumping the column.
The mistake we see homeowners make is buying asymmetric because they read online it’s the better design, then installing it in a garage where the columns end up too close to the wall to open the driver’s door anyway. Column-to-wall clearance on a 2 post car lift needs to be at least 24 inches for a modern SUV. Measure your bay width before you spec — if you have 26 feet across, either symmetric or asymmetric works; if you have 22 feet, asymmetric wins; if you have 20 feet, we start talking about a 4-post or a mid-rise scissor instead.
Hydraulic cylinder seals — the wear part that outlasts the lift
The cylinder is the part of a 2 post car lift most owners never think about, and that’s mostly fine because in a home garage a cylinder seal lasts fifteen to twenty years. Cylinders weep when the seal stack — usually two U-cup primary seals plus a wiper — takes on scoring from a rod nick or age-hardening. The tell is a slow drift-down over an hour or two with a car parked at height, or oil on the underside of the crown when you look up. For a home-use lift, that timeline lines up with when you’d think about replacing the lift anyway, so most homeowners never touch a seal kit.
What you do want to know is whether your brand has a serviceable cylinder. Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak all publish seal kits by cylinder part number, and we stock the common ones. Some import brands sell only whole-cylinder replacements at 60 percent the price of the original lift, which is a rebuild-versus-replace decision that lands squarely on the replacement side. That’s another reason we push first-time buyers to a domestic brand even at the home-garage price point — the parts backbone means your lift is still fixable in 2040.
Overhead versus floorplate: pick based on ceiling, not preference
Every buyer has an opinion on overhead versus floorplate, and most of those opinions are formed by internet forum posts rather than by measuring the ceiling. The rule is simple: if your beam clearance is 12 feet or more, overhead is easier to work under because there’s no equalizer bar crossing the floor. If your beam clearance is under 12 feet, you go floorplate (baseplate) because the overhead crossmember would either not fit or would rob your rise height. There is no home-garage penalty for choosing baseplate on a 2 post car lift; the equalizer runs across the floor and you learn to step over it in a week.
What does matter is anchor placement. A baseplate lift has a floor plate on each side connected by the hydraulic and equalizer routing, and if you set the columns too close together the routing binds. We use factory-spec column-to-column distance on every baseplate install, not shop-preference numbers, because manufacturers publish the arm swing envelopes assuming that spacing. Freelancing the layout because your bay is a foot narrower than ideal will cost you clearance on every rotor swap for the next ten years.
What a fair total price looks like for an Iowa home garage
