Start with your ceiling, not your capacity
Almost every first-time buyer we talk to leads with capacity. “I need 10,000 pounds.” Fine — but capacity is rarely the constraint in a home garage. Ceiling height is. An overhead clearfloor model needs the top beam to clear your joists, and that beam sits above the columns, so a 12-foot column plus beam and motor assembly can eat 13 feet or more. If you’ve got a 10-foot ceiling, you’re looking at a baseplate design where the crossover hose and equalization cables run through a low channel on the floor between the columns.
The southern Minnesota caller had 14 feet, which is a luxury — he could run an overhead unit and still raise a sedan to full height with room to stand under the rockers. Most Iowa and Minnesota garages built in the last twenty years land between 10 and 12 feet, and that’s the range where we spend the most time doing math. Measure to the lowest obstruction: garage door track, opener rail, light fixtures, sprinkler heads. Then measure your door opening height, because you have to drive the vehicle in before you can lift it. We’ve seen more than one homeowner buy a beautiful piece of equipment and then discover the overhead beam blocks their sectional door travel. Clearfloor versus baseplate for exhaust and driveline work
Since exhaust and driveline access is the whole point for a lot of hobby buyers, the floor between the columns matters more than it does in a commercial shop. A clearfloor design gives you a completely open bay — nothing to roll a transmission jack over, nothing to trip on when you’re walking a driveshaft out from under a truck. That’s the version we recommend whenever ceiling height allows, because dropping a two-piece exhaust or a rear axle means dragging equipment across that floor repeatedly.
Baseplate models put a low steel channel across the floor carrying the hydraulic line and cables. It’s maybe an inch and a half tall with a ramped cover, and it’s genuinely not a big deal for most work — you can roll a floor jack over it with a little effort. But when you’re sliding a long exhaust system out sideways or maneuvering a jack stand under a differential, you’ll notice it. The tradeoff is straightforward: baseplate buys you back a foot or more of usable lifting height. One of our regular hobby customers in northern Iowa went baseplate specifically because his shop had a 10-foot ceiling and he’d rather have a bump in the floor than a lift that only raises a car to chest height. Also worth noting: asymmetric arm configurations swing the vehicle back slightly so the door opens past the column, which matters a lot when you’re getting in and out of a car twenty times during a brake job.
Anchoring into a residential slab
This is where honest conversations happen. A two-post design transfers everything into the anchors — there is no fourth point of contact holding it down. Manufacturers typically call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many spec more depending on capacity. We’ve had callers tell us their slab is “about five inches, maybe less,” and that “maybe less” is the part that keeps us up at night.
The fix isn’t complicated. Core drill a small test hole in the bay where the columns will sit, measure the actual thickness, and check whether you hit rebar or wire mesh. If you come up short, you cut out a pad section for each column and pour new footings to spec — usually a few feet square and eight to twelve inches deep, tied into the existing slab. It’s a weekend of work and a modest concrete bill, and it’s dramatically cheaper than the alternative. We also see slabs that are thick enough but heavily cracked or spalling near a floor drain, which is its own problem because anchors need solid material for the full embedment depth. If you’re building or repouring a garage floor and you even suspect a lift is in your future, tell your concrete contractor now. Six inches of properly reinforced concrete costs very little extra at pour time and eliminates the whole question.
What a 2 post car lift actually costs to own
Purchase price is the number everybody fixates on, and we get why. Entry-level 9,000 and 10,000 lb units land in the low-to-mid four figures. Mid-tier equipment from established brands sits meaningfully higher, and the premium commercial-grade columns run well into five figures. For a home garage seeing a few dozen lifts a year, the entry and mid tiers are perfectly legitimate — you’re not cycling a hundred vehicles a week.
What buyers underestimate is everything after the invoice. Freight on a two-post shipment is real money because you’re moving several thousand pounds of steel on a truck, and residential delivery means curbside on a liftgate or a semi you have to unload yourself. That southern Minnesota buyer had a neighbor with equipment; if you don’t, budget for a rental or a rigger. Then there’s hydraulic fluid — most units ship dry and need a few gallons of ATF or a specified hydraulic oil. Anchors, a torque wrench, and shims are usually on you too. Concrete work, if your slab needs it, is its own line item. And down the road, wear parts: equalization cables stretch and need adjustment, arm restraint gears wear, and cylinder seals eventually weep. None of it is expensive individually, but people who budget only the sticker price feel blindsided. Our advice is to plan for roughly 20 to 30 percent above unit price for a first-time home installation done properly.
Hydraulic cylinder seals: the part that fails quietly
Here’s the failure mode we field the most calls about, and it almost never presents as a dramatic breakdown. Someone calls and says the motor runs, there’s fluid in the reservoir, nothing’s leaking on the floor — and the carriage either won’t come up or drifts down overnight. Nine times out of ten that’s internal cylinder seal bypass. The piston seal has hardened or nicked, so hydraulic fluid is slipping past the piston inside the barrel instead of pushing it. Nothing leaks externally because the fluid never leaves the cylinder.
The good news is that a seal kit is one of the cheapest repairs on the entire machine. A rebuild kit for a typical two-post cylinder includes the piston seal, wiper, rod seal, backup rings, and O-rings — a modest parts cost against replacing a whole cylinder assembly. The work involves lowering the carriages onto safety locks, relieving pressure, disconnecting the hose, pulling the cylinder, and unthreading the gland nut. If the barrel bore is scored or the chrome on the rod is pitted, seals alone won’t hold and you need a new cylinder. Rod pitting usually comes from an unheated garage where condensation sits on exposed chrome — one reason we tell homeowners to park the carriages low and wipe the rods down. Cables, locks, and the annual walkaround
Two-post equipment uses equalization cables running over sheaves at the top and bottom of the columns to keep the carriages level. They aren’t lifting cables in most designs — hydraulics do the lifting — but they absolutely determine whether one side climbs faster than the other. Over years of cycling, cables stretch. When a homeowner tells us their carriages are visibly out of sync by an inch or two, that’s a tensioning adjustment at the take-up nuts, not a mystery.
Once a year, spend thirty minutes on a walkaround. Check cable tension and look for broken strands or flat spots where a cable rides a sheave. Verify both safety locks click into every position as the carriage rises and that they release together when you pull the handle — a lock that’s slow to release usually means a rusty linkage or a dry pivot needing lubrication. Inspect anchor bolts for torque; concrete relaxes slightly over the first few months and anchors can loosen. Look at the arm restraint gears and pins for wear, because a worn restraint lets an arm swing under load, which is exactly how a vehicle comes off the pads. Check the fluid level with the carriages fully down, not up. And look at the rubber pads — cracked, oil-soaked pads lose grip. Buying smart the first time
