A body shop foreman in Sioux City called us last spring with a problem we hear constantly: he had approval to buy a 2 post car lift for his second bay, he’d picked out a model, and then the whole project stalled because nobody could answer a simple question — how does a 2,000-pound crate of steel columns actually get from a semi trailer into his building? That’s the part most online listings skip entirely. Capacity charts and arm-reach diagrams are easy to find. Freight class, liftgate limitations, dock height, and whether your forklift can handle a top-heavy column are the things that turn a clean purchase into a three-week headache. Start With Capacity, Not With Price

The single most common mistake we see in general repair and body work is buying capacity based on the average vehicle instead of the worst-case vehicle. A shop that mostly does sedans and crossovers will look at a 9,000 lb unit and think it’s plenty. Then a three-quarter-ton crew cab with a topper and a full toolbox rolls in, and suddenly the math is uncomfortable. For a body shop foreman doing daily maintenance, collision teardown, and the occasional fleet pickup, 10,000 lb is the practical floor and 12,000 lb is the number we recommend when the budget allows. The price difference between those two tiers is smaller than most people expect — often a few hundred dollars — and it buys you years of not thinking about it.

Capacity also interacts with arm design. A symmetric two-post puts the columns directly across from each other and splits the vehicle 50/50, which suits trucks and vans with long wheelbases. An asymmetric layout rotates the columns and moves the vehicle back, giving you door clearance to get in and out of a car while it’s raised — a real advantage in a body shop where you’re constantly opening doors to check panel gaps and wiring. Many current models, including the BendPak XPR-10S and comparable Rotary and Challenger units, use expandable top beams and telescoping arms so you can run either configuration. If your bay mix is genuinely split between cars and light trucks, that flexibility is worth paying for.

Ceiling Height Decides Overhead vs. Baseplate

Before anyone talks model numbers, measure your ceiling — and measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Lights, sprinkler heads, ductwork, radiant tube heaters, and garage door tracks all count. A clearfloor overhead-beam design needs roughly 12 feet of usable height for a standard 10,000 lb unit, and more if you want to raise a tall van to full height. Under about 11.5 feet, you’re looking at a baseplate model where the hydraulic lines and equalization cables run through a low plate across the floor instead of a beam over the top.

We had a North Dakota buyer last year with a hard 139-inch ceiling limit who assumed he was out of luck. He wasn’t — baseplate lifts are a completely legitimate choice and have been for decades. The tradeoff is that the floor plate is a trip point and a wheel-rolling nuisance, and it complicates sweeping and drain routing. In a body shop, the plate also collects dust and overspray. Overhead is cleaner if you have the room, but do not force it. We’ve seen shops shim, trim, and relocate lighting to squeeze in an overhead unit and end up with a lift they can only raise two-thirds of the way. That’s worse than a baseplate in every measurable sense.

Concrete Is Not Negotiable

Every 2 post car lift on the market anchors into the slab, and the anchors are what keep the whole thing standing. Most manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb unit, and many call for 4.25 inches or more depending on anchor length. Older shop floors in Sioux City, Le Mars, and the surrounding towns are frequently thinner than the owner believes — we’ve cored slabs that were advertised as six inches and measured three and a half with rebar sitting near the surface.

If you don’t know your slab thickness, find out before you order. A hammer drill test hole in an inconspicuous spot takes ten minutes and tells you everything. Where the concrete is short, the fix is a poured pad: cut out a section roughly six by twelve feet under each column footprint, dig down, and pour a properly reinforced pad at least a foot thick. It’s a real expense, usually in the low four figures depending on your contractor, but it’s a one-time cost and it protects a piece of equipment that will outlast several vehicles. Freight: How the Crate Actually Arrives

Here’s the part that stalls projects. A two-post ships as two or three long, heavy pieces — columns strapped to a pallet or skid, plus a carton of arms, hardware, and the power unit. Total shipping weight commonly runs 1,600 to 2,400 lb depending on capacity. That’s LTL freight on a 48- or 53-foot trailer, and the carrier’s job ends at the back of that trailer. They do not bring it inside. They frequently do not even have a liftgate unless you specify and pay for one, and a standard liftgate is rated well below the weight of a full two-post skid anyway.

So the honest answer for most shops is that you need a forklift with at least 5,000 lb capacity and long forks, or a telehandler. Columns are tall and top-heavy on the pallet; pick them low, keep the mast tilted back, and take it slow across an uneven lot. If you don’t have a forklift, tell us before you order. We can quote delivery to a terminal where you pick it up on a trailer, arrange a rollback service, or bundle unloading into an installation visit. What you cannot do is have a semi show up at 7 a.m. with a 2,000 lb skid and no plan. We’ve watched that go badly enough times to make it the first question we ask.

What Installation Actually Involves

Some buyers install their own equipment and do a fine job of it. It’s not mysterious work: set the columns, square and plumb them, drill and set anchors to spec with a torque wrench, hang the carriages, route the equalization cables, mount the power unit, plumb the hydraulic lines, wire it to a dedicated circuit, then bleed the system and cycle it through its full travel several times unloaded. Budget a full day for two people who have done it before, and closer to two days if you haven’t.

Where DIY installs go wrong is almost always in the details that don’t show up immediately. Anchors set in a hole that wasn’t blown clean of dust will hold at first and loosen over time. Equalization cables tensioned by feel rather than by measurement cause the carriages to drift out of level, which wears the cable and the sheaves. Columns that are a quarter-inch out of plumb bind the carriage and put uneven load on one side. Buying a 2 Post Car Lift That You Can Get Parts For

The lift you buy is a fifteen-to-thirty-year decision, and the thing that determines whether you get the back half of that lifespan is parts availability. There is a large tier of import lifts sold cheaply online where the seller disappears after two years and nobody — including us — can source a replacement carriage or a matched cable set.

That matters more than the spec sheet. A 2 post car lift that sits down because its equalization cable stretched isn’t a catastrophe if you can get a cable in three days. It’s a catastrophe if the answer is “that model was discontinued and the importer is gone.” We’ve bought more than a few orphaned lifts as scrap for customers who paid good money for them. Ask the seller directly: who stocks parts for this, and what’s the lead time on a cylinder? If they can’t answer, that’s your answer. Budget Tiers and Where the Money Goes

Broadly, a new 10,000 lb two-post falls into three tiers in today’s market. The entry tier — value-brand baseplate and clearfloor units — starts in the mid four figures and gets you a functional lift with basic arms, a single-point safety release, and a one- to two-year warranty. The middle tier, low-to-mid five figures, brings you into name-brand territory with better powder coat, telescoping three-stage arms, drop-end arm options for low vehicles, and a parts pipeline that will still exist in a decade. The upper tier adds heavier capacity, wider columns, and certification that some insurers and municipal inspectors ask for.

Then add the things buyers forget. Freight from the factory to Sioux City typically runs several hundred dollars. Installation is another several hundred to low four figures. If your slab needs a pad, add that. A dedicated 220V circuit run by an electrician is a few hundred more. Optional accessories — drop-end adapters, tall truck adapters, a rolling jack tray — add up quickly and are worth buying with the lift rather than later. All in, a shop planning a realistic budget for a professionally installed 2 post car lift should expect the total to land 30 to 50 percent above the sticker price on the equipment itself.
