A car restoration shop owner near Marion asked us to help him pick a 2 post car lift last spring, and he came into the conversation the way a lot of shop owners do – with a budget number in one hand and a ceiling measurement in the other. What he did not have was a way to connect the two. He knew he could spend somewhere in a mid-four-figure range and he knew his shop had an unusual ceiling that dropped from 12 feet down to 10 feet 8 inches across an old truss line. We ended up building a decision tree together on his workbench, and it is the same one we walk almost every restoration client through when the shop shape does not cooperate.

Start with Ceiling Height

The first branch of any 2 post car lift decision tree is ceiling height. Not average ceiling; not the peak; the actual measurement above where the columns will bolt down. If the ceiling dips from a truss, joist, or duct run right over that spot, the low measurement wins. Our Marion client had a 12-foot peak and a 10-foot 8-inch low point directly over his intended lift location. That immediately eliminated the entire class of overhead-connected 10K machines that need 11 feet of clearance. It also opened up conversation about baseplate models, which route the crossover at the floor and let the ceiling stay clear.

The measurement discipline matters here. Bring a laser distance measure – not a tape and a stepladder – and take three readings across the intended column locations. Photograph the ceiling and any obstructions from the floor looking up. Send those photos with your inquiry when you contact us. Half the time, the shop owner tells us the ceiling is 12 feet, and the photos show a 10-inch beam at 10-foot-11 over the intended spot. That single detail can flip the machine recommendation from overhead to baseplate and change the price of the quote by several hundred dollars.

10 Feet or Less: Your Options Shrink

If the actual clearance above the lift location is 10 feet or less, your 2 post car lift options tighten considerably. The bulk of commercial-grade 10K machines want at least 11 feet, and pushing them into a lower ceiling voids the safety bar function or forces a custom lower top beam that not every manufacturer will build. Below 10 feet, you are almost certainly in baseplate territory, and even there, some baseplate machines still want at least 9 feet 6 inches. It is not impossible to install in a 10-foot bay, but the machine list gets short.

Restoration work adds another wrinkle. A 1970s station wagon or a lifted pickup can sit at 5 feet 10 inches or more at the roof. Add the two-post arm and pad, and the safe rise before the vehicle contacts the ceiling drops to less than the lift’s full stroke. In practice this means you cannot use the machine at full extension for tall vehicles. If your restoration mix includes anything tall, we recommend clearing at least 11 feet of ceiling before you order. If the shop cannot provide that, sometimes the honest answer is a scissor lift or a mid-rise for the tall vehicles and a lower 2-post model for cars only.

11 to 12 Feet: The Sweet Spot

Between 11 and 12 feet of ceiling is where most 10,000 lb 2 post car lift models sit comfortably. You can run a standard overhead-connected symmetric or asymmetric machine, keep the floor clear between columns, and still raise most vehicles to a workable chest-height position without the top of the vehicle hitting the overhead beam or shutoff bar. This is where our Marion client wanted to be, and he almost got there – his 12-foot peak would have worked – except that the truss dropping to 10 feet 8 inches was directly over the intended spot.

We looked at whether he could shift the lift location by six feet to sit under the peak. That would have moved the columns onto a spot where his welding table and paint booth were already parked, and neither of those was moving. Cost of relocating everything else in the shop was higher than the cost of choosing a baseplate machine. So we stayed at the low ceiling location and picked a baseplate 10K model. Sometimes the decision tree gets short because the shop tells you what it wants. Fighting the room usually costs more than adapting the equipment.

12+ Feet: Overhead vs Baseplate is a Real Choice

Above 12 feet of ceiling, both overhead-connected and baseplate configurations are viable, and the choice comes down to floor traffic and future ceiling needs. Overhead machines are marginally faster to install because the crossover cables and hydraulic run across the top beam and out of the way. Baseplate machines are quieter for full-length vehicles that might otherwise trip an overhead shutoff bar, and they keep the ceiling completely open for future lighting, exhaust hoods, or a jib crane installation down the road.

Restoration shops that plan a paint booth extension or an overhead media blast cabinet do better with baseplate. Shops that constantly roll floor jacks, welding carts, and creepers between the columns do better with overhead, because the baseplate crossover creates a small floor ridge that catches wheels. Our Marion client had both a floor-traffic preference and a future ceiling plan, and after twenty minutes with the whiteboard he landed on overhead because his ceiling was already committed to lighting and dust collection – but he almost went the other way. There is no universal right answer on this branch of the tree.

Door Swing Into the Bay

Ceiling gets most of the attention, but door swing kills more installs than any other single geometry issue. Restoration work means loading and unloading vehicles with doors open wide – to inspect body work, to run wires, to check paint reflections in daylight. If your 2 post car lift columns sit close to the overhead door opening, the vehicle door will hit the column before it opens past about 60 degrees. On a big 1960s coupe, that is a daily irritation and, over time, a paint hazard.

We spent an hour with our Marion client marking pad-point locations against his three regular project cars, then measuring door-swing arcs to the intended column locations. Two of the three cars cleared 80 degrees easily; the third – a 1966 Impala with a 51-inch door – would have contacted the column at 65 degrees. We shifted the layout eighteen inches deeper into the bay to give that door the room it needed. He gave up two feet of walk-around space behind the vehicle in exchange for full door swing on the biggest car in the rotation. Worth every inch.

Budget Tiers From Entry to Commercial

Budget is the last branch of the decision tree, and we sit it here rather than first because ceiling and door swing usually determine the machine class before price does. Within the class the machine has to fit, though, there are honest tiers. Entry-level 2 post car lift models in the 10K class sit in the mid-four-figure range and get the job done for occasional-use shops. Mid-tier commercial machines – the Rotary SPO10 and Challenger CL10 conversation – land in the upper four to low five figures depending on options. Full-package commercial builds with pad extensions, truck adapters, and alignment turnplates can push higher.

Our Marion client landed on a mid-tier commercial baseplate machine with a modest adapter package. He could have saved a thousand dollars on an entry-tier machine, but his usage was daily and he wanted the deeper parts pipeline. He also could have added another thousand in options he did not need. The right budget within a class is the one that covers your actual vehicle mix and leaves room for the wear items you will replace over ten years of use. Do not underbuy the class, and do not over-option the machine.

A Marion Restoration Shop That Nailed It

He ended up with a baseplate 10K commercial-grade 2 post car lift in a shifted floor location, an overhead configuration on a different truss than he originally planned, and a modest adapter package sized to his three regular project cars. Freight arrived within a week of ordering; install took a day and a half; his first customer vehicle went on the pads inside 48 hours of install completion. Six months later he called for a set of drop-in pad extensions to handle a low-slung fourth car that joined his rotation, and we shipped them out same day.

The decision tree worked because he brought real measurements and real usage patterns to the conversation. Every branch we walked – ceiling, door, floor traffic, budget – had a defensible answer, and the machine that showed up at the shop was the one shaped by those answers, not by a catalog page.
