The first 2 post car lift we sold to an RV and trailer service shop in central Iowa went to a shop where the biggest constraint turned out to be the door swing, not the ceiling height everyone was worried about. This is a first-year ownership story about how ceiling clearance and door clearance interact in a small-shop configuration, what the install actually required, and how the first year of oil changes and light-service work played out. Ceiling height in a shop that used to be a barn
The shop was a pole barn built in 1982, converted to a service bay in 2007, with a nominal ceiling height of “about twelve feet” as the owner described it on the phone. When we took actual measurements on the site survey, the truth was 11 feet 8 inches at the center of the bay, 11 feet 6 inches over the driver-side column location, and 11 feet 3 inches at the passenger-side column location because a purlin ran across the ceiling at that point. Nominal ceiling numbers on old central Iowa barns are almost never accurate, and the difference between 12 feet and 11 feet 6 inches is the difference between an overhead 2 post car lift and a baseplate one.
The math is simple: a standard-rise overhead lift needs about 145 inches of clear space above the floor to lift a full-height vehicle safely. His clear height was 138 inches. That eliminates overhead. An extended-rise overhead needs 176 inches, which was even farther out of reach. The baseplate 2 post car lift requires only about 130 inches of clearance because it removes the overhead beam entirely, and his 138 inches gave it 8 inches of comfortable margin. That was the config we ordered.
The door swing detail that almost killed the deal
The detail that almost killed the deal was not the ceiling — it was the overhead garage door and the way it swung up into the bay when opened. Most residential and light-commercial roll-up doors track along the ceiling at a slight upward angle for the first few feet, then run flat back into the building. His door tracked back for six feet before flattening, which meant when it was fully open, the bottom of the tracked panel sat 96 inches above the floor and directly in the swing arc of the front lift arms.
The fix was to relocate the lift 30 inches deeper into the bay than his original plan, which put the columns behind where the door tracked and cleared the arm swing envelope with 6 inches to spare. Small detail, easy to miss, and if we had not been on-site with a tape measure and a scale drawing of his overhead door, he would have installed a 2 post car lift he could not fully lift with the door open. Central Iowa shops with roll-up doors always deserve a door-swing check as part of the site survey, and I would put that check on par with the ceiling measurement in terms of importance.
The overhead versus baseplate call and why we went baseplate

The overhead beam is a nice-to-have when your ceiling allows it, but skipping it for a modest savings and a slightly cleaner install is not a bad trade in a building that would not have accepted the overhead anyway.
Install day: what fit and what did not
Install day started at 7:30 AM and finished at 4 PM. The columns went up without drama, the anchors held first-torque without pull-out, and the drive-over strip fit clean against the slab. What did not fit on install day was the customer’s original bay layout — his tire rack was too close to the passenger-side column and had to be moved 18 inches to the side wall to clear arm swing. That took 40 minutes and involved unmounting a wall bracket, moving the rack, and remounting. He had not thought about the rack during the site survey because it had not seemed close to the lift location on paper.
Lesson from install day: walk the physical bay with the actual lift footprint marked on the floor in tape before the freight lands. Tire racks, air compressors, oil drum stands, and workbenches all have working clearances that matter for arm swing. A 2 post car lift install is not just about the two column footprints; it is about the working envelope around them, and that envelope is bigger than most shop owners initially think. The tape trick is free and catches every rack-clearance surprise before it becomes an install-day problem.
The first oil change on the new 2 post car lift
The first oil change on the new 2 post car lift was a Silverado 2500 that a regular customer brought in the day after install. The truck ran about 7,400 pounds curb weight, well under the 12,000 lb capacity, and the wheelbase fit the arm envelope with room. Spotting was straightforward: front arms just behind the front wheels, rear arms just ahead of the rear axle, standard pads because it was a single-rear-wheel truck.
The oil change itself was uneventful, which is the whole point. The truck came up in about 90 seconds, sat on the mechanical locks at chest height, drained in the fifteen minutes it takes for warm oil to fully evacuate, refilled with the fill gun without any awkward arm angles, and came back down in another 90 seconds. Total shop time was maybe twenty-two minutes. The customer’s previous oil change setup on floor jacks and stands would have been closer to forty-five minutes for the same job, and the setup time would have been half of that.
Month four: the shop workflow that changed permanently
By month four the shop had changed how it scheduled service work. The 2 post car lift had turned oil changes from a scheduling problem into a background task — the truck comes in, goes up, drains while the tech does something else, comes down. That workflow change meant they could book four oil changes in the time slot that used to hold two, without adding any tech time. That is real revenue that shows up on the P&L.
The other workflow change was that the RV owners started bringing their tow vehicles in for service instead of the trailers themselves. Zero failures, one seal-conditioning drip on the passenger-side cylinder around month seven that resolved after a full-load hold overnight — a normal wear-in event, not a warranty item. The equalization cables required a small tension adjustment at month three. The pad rubbers show minor deformation but no cracking. Annual maintenance took about forty minutes: grease, wipe, torque check, and a visual on the anchor pads.
