Every few weeks somebody calls us from a pole barn or attached garage between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City wanting a 2 post car lift, and the very first thing we ask about is the ceiling. Not the vehicle, not the budget, not the brand — the ceiling. We have walked into too many east-central Iowa shops where a beautiful clearfloor unit sat boxed against the wall for four months because the overhead beam would have hit a garage door track by three inches. As Iowa-based installers and parts distributors, we would rather spend twenty minutes on the phone with a tape measure than watch you eat a freight charge twice. Here is the checklist we actually use.

Measure The Ceiling Before You Fall In Love With A Model
The number you need is not “about twelve feet.” It is the distance from the finished concrete floor to the lowest obstruction anywhere inside the bay footprint — and lowest obstruction almost never means the ceiling itself. It means the garage door track, the opener rail, the truss chord, the sprinkler head, the fluorescent fixture, the flex duct somebody ran in 1998. One hobbyist we helped in an east-central Iowa town had a 12-foot ceiling and a 9-foot 6-inch opener rail dead center over where the vehicle would sit. On paper he had room for anything. In reality he had room for a baseplate model and nothing else.
Write down four numbers: floor-to-ceiling, floor-to-lowest-obstruction, the height of your overhead door when fully open, and the width of usable clear space wall to wall. Then check the spec sheet for overall height and maximum rise. A typical clearfloor two-post with a 10,000 lb rating wants roughly 12 feet of clean overhead, and even then the crossbeam eats the top foot. If your barn is at 11 feet or lower, you are almost certainly in baseplate territory, and that is fine — baseplate two-posts have been doing serious work in Iowa shops for decades. What matters is that you know which category you are shopping in before you put money down, because a shortened column kit is not something you improvise on install day.
Door Swing Is The Constraint Nobody Checks
Ceiling height gets all the attention. Door swing quietly ruins more installs. A sectional overhead door does not stay flat against the ceiling — it curves up on a radius track that dips several inches lower than the horizontal run for the first two or three feet inside the opening. If your columns land close to the door, that curve is the thing that hits. We measure from the inside face of the header back to where the track levels out, then mark it on the floor in chalk so the customer can see exactly where the no-go zone is.
The other door problem is arm swing, not door swing. On a symmetric two-post, the arms sweep out wide and low. In a 20-foot-wide bay you have plenty of room. In an 18-foot bay with a workbench on one side and a water heater on the other, the driver-side rear arm may not be able to reach its pickup point without hitting something. We also look at what happens when the vehicle is up and the door is down — plenty of Iowa hobbyists want to close up the shop in January with a car in the air and a floor heater running. If the raised vehicle’s mirrors or roof rack sit in the door’s path, that is a problem you find out about at the worst possible moment. Sketch the bay, mark the door, mark the arms.
Transmission Service Changes What “Enough Height” Means
If you bought the lift mainly to rotate tires and change oil, mid-range rise is plenty. Transmission work is a different animal. Dropping an automatic out of a truck means you need the vehicle high enough that the case clears the crossmember on the way down, plus room for a jack or transmission table under it, plus room for you to stand upright and wrestle it. That stacked requirement is why we ask what the biggest job on your list is before we recommend anything.
A weekend mechanic we worked with in east-central Iowa pulls two or three transmissions a winter out of 1990s pickups. He originally wanted the lowest-cost baseplate unit he could find. Once we walked through the actual job — bellhousing bolts at chest height, converter in the way, a borrowed trans jack that adds fourteen inches under the case — it was obvious he needed the extra rise and the extra headroom that a taller column gives you. He ended up going clearfloor after we confirmed his barn had 13 feet of clean space and moving his opener to a jackshaft drive on the side wall. The lesson is that the job dictates the height, and the height dictates whether you are shopping baseplate or overhead. Do that math in the right order and the rest of the decision gets easy.
Concrete: Thickness, Age, And What Sits Under It
Manufacturers publish minimums for a reason, and the reason is that anchor bolts only work if there is enough sound concrete around them to develop holding power. For most 10,000 lb two-post models you are looking at a minimum in the 4-to-4.25-inch range at 3,000 PSI or better, with a specified distance to any joint or edge. Iowa pole barns are all over the map. We have cored slabs that measured a full 6 inches and slabs the owner swore were 5 inches that turned out to be 3.5 with a wire mesh sitting right where the anchors needed to go.
Get real data. A rotary hammer and a piece of welding rod will tell you thickness in five minutes. Look for control joints, look for cracks, and look at where the slab meets the apron near the door — that transition is often thinner and it is frequently exactly where somebody wants a column. If your slab is short, the fix is a footing pour: saw out a section under each column, dig down, pour a proper pad, let it cure. It is a day of work and it is far cheaper than replacing a vehicle that came down. We would rather tell you to pour footings than sell you a lift that anchors into gravel. Power, Air, And Where The Cord Actually Reaches
The power unit on a two-post is usually a 220V single-phase motor, and in a lot of Iowa garages the only 220 circuit feeds a welder on the far wall. Before you order, confirm what you have at the panel, what the breaker size is, and how far the run is to the column where the power unit will hang. Voltage drop over a long undersized run makes a motor work hard, run hot, and fail early — we have replaced power units that were killed by wiring, not by the pump.
Decide which column gets the power unit early, because that determines which side is your “clean” side. Most people want the pump away from the workbench and away from the walkway. You also want to think about air. Nearly every two-post uses shop air to release the mechanical safety locks, so if you do not have an air line in that bay, add one to the project list. A small compressor is enough for lock release, and if you plan on running impacts up top, size accordingly. Finally, plan the hose and cable routing so nothing crosses the floor where you will roll a creeper or a jack. On a baseplate model the crossover hose and cable run in the floor channel, and that channel needs to stay clear of where a jack stand wants to sit. These are little things that turn into daily annoyances if you skip them.
What A Pre-Purchase Checklist For A 2 Post Car Lift Looks Like
Here is the version we read off over the phone. One: floor-to-lowest-obstruction height, measured, not estimated. Two: overhead door type and how far the radius track dips inside the opening. Three: usable bay width wall to wall, and what is bolted to those walls. Four: slab thickness, PSI if you know it, distance from column locations to joints and edges. Five: heaviest vehicle you will lift, plus 20 percent for the day you borrow your neighbor’s three-quarter-ton. Six: longest and lowest vehicles, since that drives arm reach and pad height.
Seven: available 220V circuit, breaker size, and distance to the panel. Eight: air supply for lock release. Nine: how the crate comes off the truck — a lot of folks have a forklift or a skid steer, and if you do not, we need to know before delivery. Ten: symmetric or asymmetric, which comes down to what you drive and how much you care about opening doors while it is up. Answer those ten and we can quote a 2 post car lift that actually fits your building. Skip them and you are gambling with freight money. Where To Buy And Who Should Bolt It Down

What we do not recommend is chasing the cheapest listing you can find online with no parts support behind it, because in five years you will want a cable, a lock latch, or a cylinder seal kit and you will be on your own.
On installation: plenty of capable people set their own. If you have a forklift, a laser level, a rotary hammer, and the patience to shim columns plumb, you can do it. Where we earn our keep is on the judgment calls — footing repairs, tight ceilings, odd door geometry, and the initial safety check that confirms both carriages and both locks are truly synchronized. Either way, keep the manual, torque the anchors to spec, and get in the habit of an annual inspection.
