2 Post Car Lift Electrical Checklist for a Sioux City Farm Shop

A farm shop north of Sioux City called us in early spring about a 2 post car lift they wanted for pulling transmissions out of their fleet pickups and the occasional grain-truck automatic. Everything about the shop said “this will be easy” – big pole building, high ceiling, clean concrete pour from three years back. Then we asked about the electrical panel. That is where every otherwise-easy install can turn into a two-week delay. What follows is the electrical pre-purchase checklist we ran with the owner, in the same order we run it with every farm shop that calls us in northwest Iowa.

Single Phase or Three Phase Know Before You Buy

The single most important question in any 2 post car lift electrical checklist is whether your shop has single-phase or three-phase service. Farm buildings, home shops, and most rural outbuildings run single-phase 220-volt service, which is what most 10,000 lb commercial-grade lifts are designed for. Commercial garages in cities sometimes have three-phase service, which lets you run a smaller, quieter motor at higher efficiency. The two are not interchangeable – a three-phase motor will not run on single-phase power without a converter, and single-phase motors do not benefit from three-phase.

Our Sioux City client had a 200-amp single-phase service to the shop, fed from a rural cooperative line. Standard for the region. That immediately steered us toward single-phase 220-volt lift models, which is 90 percent of what we quote for farm shops anyway. If your shop has three-phase available, you have options either way; if you have only single-phase, the choice is made for you before you open a catalog. Take a picture of your main disconnect and panel label. If it says “1-phase” or shows two hot legs, you have single-phase. Three hot legs means three-phase.

Amperage and Breaker Sizing

A typical 2 post car lift motor draws around 15 to 20 amps at 220 volts single-phase during a lift cycle. Manufacturers spec a dedicated 30-amp breaker for the circuit, which gives you headroom for motor startup surge. Our Sioux City client’s panel had room for a two-pole 30-amp breaker with capacity to spare. That was the easy part. What we spent more time on was the total panel load: he was already running a large air compressor, a MIG welder, shop lights, and a grain-dryer transfer pump on the same 200-amp service. Adding the lift meant he needed to check what he ran simultaneously.

The rule of thumb is that you can size up close to your service capacity, but you should never run two large motor loads at their peak simultaneously. Compressor cycling while the lift is raising a heavy vehicle can trip a marginal service. He ran the numbers with his electrician and confirmed the 200-amp service could handle worst-case usage as long as the grain-dryer pump was not running during winter lifts. That is a farm-shop-specific concern most catalogs never mention, and it is exactly why we walk this checklist item-by-item rather than assuming amperage means anything by itself.

Wire Gauge and Run Length

Once the breaker is set, the wire from the panel to the lift motor has to be sized correctly for both amperage and run length. Undersized wire on a long run causes voltage drop, which makes the motor work harder, run hotter, and eventually fail early. For a 30-amp circuit at 220 volts running under 50 feet, 10-gauge wire is standard. Over 50 feet, you step up to 8-gauge. Over 100 feet, you may need 6-gauge or larger. Farm shops often have long panel-to-equipment runs because the panel lives at the service entrance and the lift wants to sit at the working end of the building.

Our Sioux City client’s panel was 85 feet from the intended lift location. We recommended 8-gauge THHN in conduit to give him the voltage stability, and his electrician agreed. The extra copper cost was maybe forty dollars over 10-gauge and paid for itself in the first month of clean starts. If you are already running conduit for other equipment in the same building, add the lift circuit to the same trench or ceiling run to save labor. Farm shops build once and live with the wiring for decades, so overbuild by one gauge rather than under-spec.

Farm Service Panels and Available Loads

Farm shops often share service with grain bins, augers, irrigation pumps, or livestock buildings on a common yard pole. Those loads cycle unpredictably, and a full-yard service under peak load can leave a shop with only a fraction of its rated capacity available at times. Our Sioux City client’s yard included two grain bin fans that ran hard during harvest, and we asked him whether he expected to be using the 2 post car lift during those windows. He laughed and said he did not touch mechanical work during harvest anyway, so the answer was no.

If your farm has heavy seasonal loads that overlap with when you would want the lift, plan for it. A voltage recorder on the shop panel for a few days will show you the low-voltage windows. Some shops solve this with a soft-start motor on the lift, which reduces inrush current and cures marginal service. Others plan usage around the load cycles. Either is fine. What is not fine is discovering during install that the shop’s real available amperage is 30 percent below nameplate because the grain bins are pulling. Do the survey up front.

220 vs 208 Volt It Matters

Most farm shops run true 240-volt (or 220-volt nominal) single-phase service. Commercial buildings sometimes have 208-volt service derived from three-phase transformers. A 2 post car lift motor rated for 208-230 volts will run on either, but a motor rated 220-240 running on 208 will be slightly slower and slightly warmer. Not a killer, but worth checking. Take a voltmeter reading at the outlet where the lift will be wired and confirm the actual line voltage under normal load.

Our Sioux City client’s shop measured 244 volts unloaded and 238 under load. That is comfortably in spec for any 220-240 volt motor. If your voltage measures under 220, talk to the utility before you install the lift – a persistent low reading can indicate a transformer sized too small for the yard, and the fix is usually a service upgrade rather than something you work around at the equipment. This is a minor item on the checklist for most farm shops but occasionally saves someone from a puzzled motor-runs-slow phone call two weeks after install.

Grounding and Anchor Bolt Interaction

Every 2 post car lift needs a proper equipment ground – the green or bare copper wire in the circuit that ties the motor housing to the panel ground bar. In older farm shops, we sometimes find neutrals and grounds bonded at multiple locations, which creates ground loops and, in rare cases, current paths through concrete rebar. Because a lift is anchored to the slab with wedge bolts that reach into the rebar, a poorly-grounded shop can develop stray current between the columns and the slab. It is unusual but not unheard of.

Our Sioux City client’s shop had a clean electrical service inspection from the pole barn’s original build, and grounding was correct. We still checked continuity between the lift columns and the panel ground before energizing the motor for the first time. Two ohms or less is what we want. If your shop is older and the service was built up piecemeal, ask an electrician to check ground continuity as a separate item before install day. It is a fifteen-minute test and it prevents strange nuisance issues from ever showing up.

Getting the Electrician on Site the Right Week

The final item on the checklist is timing. In most rural areas, licensed electricians book two to three weeks out. If the shop needs a new circuit run, a new breaker installed, or a service upgrade, that work has to happen before the lift install day – not the same day. We coordinate with the client’s electrician directly if the client wants us to, so the freight arrival, the electrician’s work, and our install crew’s visit all line up in the right order.

For our Sioux City client, the sequence went: order the lift, schedule the electrician to run the 30-amp circuit the following week, freight arrived the week after that, and our crew installed the machine three days later. Total elapsed time from decision to first vehicle on the pads was 22 days. Skipping the electrician sequencing is the fastest way to turn a 22-day timeline into a 40-day timeline. A 2 post car lift is a straightforward machine to install when the electrical work has been scoped in advance and the shop is ready for it.
