Step 1: Measure the Bay Before You Read a Single Spec
Every checklist for a 2 post car lift begins with a tape measure. Not the online configurator, not the brand website — a physical tape measure across your own concrete. Write down three numbers: ceiling height from finished floor to the lowest obstruction, width from wall to wall inside the bay, and depth from the roll-up door to the back wall. Then subtract for shelving, workbenches, and anything else you refuse to move. What is left is the real footprint you have to work with.
The Dubuque hobbyist thought he had a fourteen-foot ceiling because that is what the pole-barn brochure promised. When he actually put the tape up, the lowest garage-door track was at eleven feet eight inches. That single measurement eliminated three of the four 2 post car lift models on his shortlist — the overhead safety bar would have crashed into the track every cycle. Measurement first, model numbers second. If you skip this step, you will end up either returning a lift or living with a permanent workaround.
Step 2: Nail Down Capacity by Your Heaviest Realistic Vehicle
Capacity is the second checklist line. Most hobby mechanics work on the same three or four vehicles: a daily driver, a project, and maybe a truck. Take the heaviest curb weight in your driveway and add a thousand pounds of margin for tools, fluid, and the transmission jack. That gets you to a nominal capacity. A hobbyist working on a Miata and a Silverado 1500 lands at 10,000 lb comfortably. Someone with a Suburban or a diesel three-quarter-ton should look at 12,000 or 14,000.
We hear a lot of hobbyists say they want the biggest 2 post car lift they can fit, just in case. We push back. A 15,000 lb commercial unit has fatter columns, heavier arms, and a taller minimum pad height than a 10,000 lb clearfloor. That extra pad height matters when you are trying to reach the lift point on a low sports car. Buy for your actual fleet, not for a hypothetical dually you might someday own. Step 3: Compare Model Numbers Apples to Apples
Once you know your ceiling and your capacity, the model-number comparison finally starts to make sense. Warranty ranges from one year on some entry-level units to lifetime structural on the top Rotary and Challenger models. Arm reach — how far the pad can travel from center — decides whether you can spot a long wheelbase truck without repositioning. Column height decides your headroom under the crossbar. Country of origin decides parts availability five years from now. None of those are dealbreakers on their own, but together they push most hobbyists toward one or two models. Run the sheet before you buy.
Step 4: Sanity-Check the Concrete
A 2 post car lift transmits its entire load through four anchor bolts per column into your slab. Manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, undamaged, with no expansion joint running under the base. A lot of home garages have three-and-a-half-inch pours with a wire mesh, which is not quite up to spec. A lot of older detached garages have a two-inch topping over dirt — completely unsuitable. If you are not sure what you have, drill a small test hole in a corner or dig up an edge and measure.
When the concrete is borderline, you have two options: cut and pour a new pad in the lift footprint, or move to a longer anchor with epoxy. A lift that pops an anchor at height with your project car in the air is not a repair story you want to tell. Take the extra weekend to fix the slab.
Step 5: Verify Arm Reach for a Differential Fluid Service
A hobbyist who plans to do differential fluid service and other under-vehicle work needs to think about arm reach and pad height together. On most trucks, the rear differential is inboard of the frame and easy to reach with a standard pad. On some cars, the lift points are almost centerline, and short-reach arms cannot get there without repositioning the vehicle. Drop-end arms — the tip that dips lower and reaches farther — solve most of these problems for a small upcharge.
The other detail that matters for differential fluid service is the minimum pad height. If your project car sits at four inches ground clearance, a factory pad at five inches minimum will not slide under without ramps. Add ramps to the checklist, or spec drop-end arms with a low-profile pad adapter. This is not exotic equipment; every good 2 post car lift dealer stocks the adapters. Step 6: Add the Line Items Nobody Talks About
The last three checklist rows are freight, install, and accessories — the line items that catch hobbyists by surprise. Freight to a residential address with a lift-gate truck runs more than freight to a commercial dock, and the truck cannot usually back up your driveway. Plan for a curbside drop and a way to get the crate into the garage. A neighbor with a forklift or a rental skid steer solves this cheaply. Accessories that hobbyists forget: pad adapters for low cars, a truck adapter set, spring-arm restraints if the lift did not ship with them, and a fluid-catch basin for differential fluid service and oil changes. None of those are expensive individually, but stacked up they add a few hundred dollars to the real cost of ownership. We would rather quote the whole picture up front than surprise you at delivery. That is the last row on the pre-purchase checklist, and it is the one that keeps the phone from ringing on Sunday morning.
