An EV specialty shop owner here in Ames called us last winter because his 2 post car lift had started making a noise he described as “a chirp on the way up, nothing on the way down.” He’d owned the lift for six years, ran it hard doing annual state inspections and battery-pack service, and had never once had the equalizer cables inspected — because, as he put it, “the motor’s fine and it’s never leaked.” That’s the myth we want to take apart in this article. Hydraulic health and cable health are two completely separate systems, and the one that quietly kills lifts is almost never the one shop owners are watching. Here’s what we actually find when we pull covers.

Myth #1: “If the Hydraulics Are Fine, the Lift Is Fine”

This is the single most common misunderstanding we run into, and it’s an easy one to fall into because the hydraulic system is the loud, visible part. The power unit hums, the cylinder pushes, the carriage goes up. But on a two-post, hydraulic pressure only lifts one carriage directly. The other carriage is pulled up in sync by equalizer cables running over sheaves at the top and bottom of the columns. Those cables carry no lifting load in normal operation — their job is synchronization — but if one snaps, the two carriages immediately go out of level and the lift becomes genuinely dangerous.

The Ames shop owner’s chirp turned out to be a sheave bearing that had seized on one side. The cable was still functional but was sawing across a frozen pulley instead of rolling over it, and about eighteen inches of the run had visible broken strands and flattening. His hydraulics were, as he said, perfect. Fluid clean, no weep at the cylinder, motor pulling normal amps. Had he waited another few months of inspection-volume cycling, he’d have had a cable failure on a customer’s vehicle. We replaced both cables, both top sheaves, and re-set the lock ladders in about four hours. That’s a routine service call. A snapped cable with a car in the air is not.

Myth #2: “There’s a Fixed Cable Replacement Interval”

People want a number. Three years, five years, seven years. There isn’t one, and any shop that gives you a flat number without asking about your usage is guessing. Cable life on a two-post is driven almost entirely by cycle count and environment, not calendar age. A lift in a low-volume restoration shop that goes up twice a week can run a decade on original cables and still pass inspection. The same lift in a high-throughput inspection bay doing thirty-plus cycles a day can show meaningful strand damage inside two years.

What we recommend instead is a real inspection schedule tied to how you use the equipment. Visual check monthly — walk the cable runs with a rag and a flashlight, look for broken strands, kinks, flat spots, rust bloom, and any place the cable rides off-center on a sheave. Full annual inspection by a qualified inspector, which is what ANSI/ALI guidance calls for anyway and what your insurance carrier will ask about after an incident. Then replace based on condition, not the calendar. If you find even a handful of broken wires in one lay length, or the cable diameter has visibly reduced from wear, it’s done. We keep cable sets on the shelf for the common two-post models precisely because condition-based replacement means the need shows up on short notice.

Myth #3: “Slack Cable Just Means It Needs Adjustment”

Slack in one equalizer cable is one of those symptoms with several possible causes, and reaching straight for the adjustment nut is a mistake we see over and over. Yes, cables stretch during break-in, and yes, the first adjustment after installation is completely normal. But if a lift that’s been in service for years suddenly develops slack, something changed — and cranking tension back in without finding out what changed just hides it for another few months.

Real causes we’ve found on service calls: a bottom sheave that’s worn a groove deep enough to change the effective cable path, a cable end fitting that’s begun to pull through its swage, a carriage slide block worn enough that the carriage is cocking in the column, and in one memorable case a column anchor that had loosened enough to let the whole post lean a fraction of a degree. Each of those needs a different fix and none of them is solved by adjustment. When we get a call about uneven carriages on a 2 post car lift, we inspect the whole load path — anchors, columns, slides, sheaves, cables, and lock ladders — before we touch a single adjuster. It takes longer and it’s the only way to actually fix the problem.

Myth #4: “A Lift That Won’t Rise Needs a New Motor”

We got a call from a shop with a Challenger two-post that wouldn’t lift at all — motor running, fluid in the reservoir, no visible leak. The owner had already priced a replacement power unit. It turned out to be a stuck check valve and air in the system from a reservoir that had been run low at some point. Total repair cost was a fraction of what a new power unit would have run, and the lift went back into service the same afternoon.

That’s the pattern with two-posts generally: the symptom rarely points at the actual failure. A lift that rises slowly under load might have a tired pump, or it might have a partially clogged suction screen, or it might be running on fluid that’s been in there since the Obama administration and has picked up enough water to cavitate. A lift that drifts down might have a bad lowering valve, or a cylinder seal, or a lock that isn’t fully disengaging and is scuffing the ladder. Before you buy parts, get somebody to actually diagnose it. What High-Cycle Inspection Work Does to a Two-Post

EV work and annual state inspections have something in common: both are high-cycle, relatively short-duration lifts. Up, work, down, next vehicle. That usage pattern is much harder on wear items than long-duration jobs like transmission or engine work, where the lift might go up once and stay up for six hours. Every cycle puts the cables over the sheaves twice, works the lock ladders, cycles the cylinder seals, and heats the hydraulic fluid.

For shops running that pattern, we push a more aggressive maintenance rhythm than the manual’s baseline. Grease the column slides on the manufacturer’s schedule and don’t skip it — dry slides cause carriage bind, and carriage bind is what puts uneven load into the cables. Check fluid level and condition quarterly rather than annually. Keep the lock mechanism clean; brake dust, road salt, and shop grime pack into lock ladders and stop them from engaging fully, which is a safety issue as much as a wear issue. And in EV bays specifically, watch your arm and pad setup — battery-pack floors mean specific lift points, and improvised pad positioning transfers uneven load into one column and, eventually, into one cable. Myth #5: “Aftermarket Cables Are All the Same”

Cable is not a commodity, and this is where we get a little opinionated. Equalizer cables are built to a specific length, a specific construction, and specific end fittings for a specific lift model and serial range. A cable that’s a half-inch off in length will never let you get both carriages level. A cable with a different wire construction — fewer, thicker strands versus more, finer ones — will have different flex fatigue behavior over a sheave even if the breaking strength on the spec sheet matches. And swaged fittings that weren’t done to spec are a failure point waiting to happen.

When someone sends us a model and serial number, we match the OEM cable set for that lift. Sometimes that’s a genuine Rotary or Challenger part, sometimes it’s a properly specified equivalent from a manufacturer we’ve used long enough to trust. What we won’t do is sell a “close enough” cable for a 2 post car lift and let a shop find out the hard way. If your lift is old enough that the original manufacturer no longer supports it — and plenty of the two-posts still working in Iowa shops are 25 or 30 years old — we can often measure and have a set built. That’s a better outcome than the thing we sometimes get called about, which is a shop that made a used cable from another lift “work.”

Building an Inspection Habit That Actually Sticks

The reason cable inspection gets skipped isn’t that shop owners don’t care. It’s that there’s no forcing function — the lift works today, so it goes to the bottom of the list. The fix that we’ve seen actually work is tying it to something you already do. Put the monthly visual on the same day you do fire extinguisher checks or change the compressor oil. Write it on the same whiteboard. Take thirty seconds per column with a flashlight and a rag, and log it, because a written log is what protects you if something ever does go wrong.

Then get a real annual inspection from someone qualified, and don’t treat it as a rubber stamp. A proper inspection on a two-post covers anchors and torque, column plumb, carriage slide wear, cable condition and tension, sheave condition, lock engagement at every position, arm restraint function, hydraulic condition, and all the safety labeling. It takes an hour or two per lift and it catches the seized sheave before it saws a cable.
