Myth one — every weep means bad cylinder seals
Nine out of ten hydraulic weeps we investigate turn out to be something other than a failed cylinder seal. On this Porsche shop’s 2 post car lift, the actual culprit was a loose fitting between the hydraulic hose and the cylinder inlet — one wrench-turn short of full torque, probably from the last time someone had chased a symptom and left it hand-tight. Fluid was seeping from the fitting, running down the outside of the cylinder body, and pooling near the base where it looked exactly like a seal weep.
The diagnostic trick is to wipe the entire cylinder body dry with a shop rag, cycle the lift under load, and look for exactly where the fresh fluid appears. If it appears at the top rod-end wiper, that is a rod-seal issue. If it appears at the base fitting, that is a fitting or hose issue. If it appears mid-body along a weld seam, that is a body integrity issue and the cylinder is done. On this shop’s machine, fresh fluid appeared right at the fitting on the second cycle. Myth two — seal kits are only for old lifts
Shop owners tend to assume that hydraulic seal wear happens only after decades of service. In reality, seal life depends much more on fluid cleanliness and operating temperature than on age. A lift that runs in a heated shop with clean fluid can go fifteen or twenty years on original seals. A lift that runs in a hot summer garage with contaminated fluid can need seals in five to seven years. A hydraulic cylinder on a commercial 2 post car lift is a precision component with tight tolerances between the rod, the barrel, the piston, and the seals. Reassembly requires the rod to seat perfectly straight, the piston to torque to a specific value, and no contamination inside the barrel during reassembly. Get any of those wrong and the new seals fail within days.
We rebuild cylinders in our shop with a bench vise setup, calibrated torque tools, and a clean parts-washer environment. Even then, we typically buy a factory seal kit rather than an aftermarket set, because factory kits include the correct wiper, rod seal, piston seal, and O-rings for the specific cylinder revision. Aftermarket kits sometimes fit and sometimes do not. The Porsche shop had considered ordering a generic seal kit online and doing the rebuild in-house. We steered him away — his time is worth more per hour than our full cylinder-rebuild labor cost, and a botched rebuild on a lift that supports six-figure vehicles is not a risk any shop should take. Myth four — mixed fluid brands cause immediate failure
The lift’s owner asked us whether topping off with a different brand of ISO 32 hydraulic fluid a year earlier might have caused the current weep. The short answer is almost certainly not. ISO viscosity ratings are standardized across manufacturers, and any two ISO 32 hydraulic fluids will mix without immediate incompatibility. Long-term, sticking with the same brand is preferable because additive packages can vary slightly, but a single top-off with a different brand does not cause seal failure.
What does cause seal failure is using the wrong viscosity grade — dumping ISO 46 or 68 into a system spec’d for ISO 32 will run pressure high and heat up seals over time. That mistake happens more often than shop owners admit. Another common seal-killer is topping off with automatic transmission fluid or engine oil in a pinch because the shop is out of hydraulic fluid on a busy Saturday. Both are compatible for a few minutes but degrade seal materials over months. On any 2 post car lift, keep two gallons of the correct hydraulic fluid in the shop at all times and never let a tech improvise. Correct fluid is cheap insurance against a five-figure cylinder failure.
Myth five — the powerpack pressure gauge tells you seal health
Some shop owners watch the powerpack pressure gauge and assume that any pressure drop between cycles indicates seal wear. In reality, a healthy hydraulic system on a 2 post car lift will show some pressure decay over time when the vehicle sits at rest, because that is what the mechanical safety locks are for. The hydraulic system holds the load only during lifting and lowering; the locks hold the load at rest. If your lift shows slow pressure decay overnight but the locks engage properly, the system is behaving exactly as designed.
Real seal failure shows up as either visible fluid weep at the rod, or a vehicle that visibly sinks a few inches between the moment you release the up-button and the moment the locks engage. The Porsche shop had neither symptom. The pressure gauge on their powerpack decayed overnight but the locks always engaged first, and the machine held any vehicle rock-steady for eight-hour restoration sessions. We told the owner to stop staring at the gauge and start watching the locks. Understanding what the gauge does and does not measure is one of those small pieces of knowledge that separates confident shop owners from anxious ones. On a properly-designed lift, hydraulics move loads and locks hold them.
Myth six — cheaper seal kits work fine
The going aftermarket seal kit for a common 2 post car lift cylinder runs somewhere in the mid two figures. The OEM factory kit for the same cylinder runs about twice as much. Shop owners look at the price difference and assume the parts are equivalent. They usually are not. Factory kits use urethane and Buna-N compounds spec’d for the exact fluid and temperature range the manufacturer designed around. Aftermarket kits sometimes use compatible materials, sometimes use slightly different ones that work fine for a year and then fail early.
We have pulled cylinders that were rebuilt with aftermarket kits eighteen months before we saw them, and the seals were already glazed and leaking. We have also seen aftermarket kits perform for a decade without issue. The problem is you cannot tell from the packaging which category any given aftermarket kit falls into. On a shop-critical lift supporting six-figure customer vehicles, the extra fifty dollars for a factory kit is one of the easiest right calls a shop can make. On a home-garage lift with a hobbyist’s own vehicles on it, aftermarket is fine. Match the seal-kit source to the value of the vehicles that will ride on the machine, and you will avoid the second and third rebuilds that plague shops that cheap out on the first one.
