A 2 post car lift uses two vertical columns, each with a set of swing arms, to pick a vehicle up by four contact points under the frame or designated lift points. Unlike a four post lift, there’s no ramp or runway under the car — the arms swing in, you set the pads, and the lift raises the vehicle clear of the floor. That open design is exactly why techs love it for brake jobs, exhaust work, and anything underneath the vehicle.
The tradeoff is that a 2 post car lift requires correctly rated, properly anchored concrete, and the operator has to know where the manufacturer’s lift points are on each vehicle. Get that wrong and you risk damaging a rocker panel or, worse, dropping a car off the pads. This is why we spend as much time training techs on arm placement during installation as we do bolting the unit down. A lift is only as safe as the person setting the pads, every single time.
Choosing the Right Capacity
Capacity is where we see the most mistakes. A lot of shops buy a 9,000 lb 2 post car lift because it’s the cheapest option, then six months later a 3/4-ton pickup or a work van rolls in and it’s overloaded. We generally recommend sizing at least one bay for 10,000 to 12,000 lbs if you do any truck or fleet work at all, even occasionally. If your shop is strictly passenger cars and light crossovers, a 9,000 lb 2 post car lift is plenty and saves you money on the purchase.
It’s not just about the number stamped on the lift either — arm length and reach matter for trucks and vans with wider frames. Ceiling Height and Bay Clearance
This is the number one reason home garage installs get delayed. A 2 post car lift needs enough overhead clearance to raise a vehicle to full height plus the column itself, and in a lot of older Iowa garages that’s tighter than owners expect. We measure ceiling height, garage door header height, and any obstructions like ductwork or garage door tracks before we ever quote a home installation.

Every 2 post car lift anchors into concrete, and the anchor bolts are only as strong as the slab underneath them. Iowa garages built decades ago, or additions poured without commercial specs in mind, sometimes don’t have adequate slab thickness or cure strength for a lift of this weight class. Manufacturers publish minimum thickness and PSI requirements, and skipping that check is how you end up with a lift that works loose over time.
Before every installation we test the slab, and if it doesn’t meet spec we’re upfront about it rather than anchoring into concrete that won’t hold. Sometimes that means pouring a small pad specifically for the 2 post car lift rather than replacing an entire garage floor, which keeps the added cost reasonable. Skipping this step to save money now is the single most common cause of lift failure claims we see reported industry-wide, and it’s completely avoidable with a pre-install inspection.
2 Post vs Other Lift Styles
We get asked constantly whether a 2 post car lift or a four post is the better call, and the honest answer depends on what you’re doing. If you need full underbody access for brakes, suspension, or exhaust work, the 2 post wins every time because nothing blocks the view or the reach.
