An independent pro shop owner in central Iowa asked us a fair question this spring: which is the better 2 post car lift for a high-cycle tire rotation and wheel service business — the Rotary SPOA10 or the Challenger CL10? Both are ALI Gold certified 10,000 lb asymmetric baseplate lifts, both are U.S.-supported through robust parts networks, both retail within $200 of each other, and both have loyal customers who will defend their choice at length. This is a side-by-side comparison of the two most common mid-tier 2 post car lift configurations we sell, focused specifically on the tire rotation and wheel work use case that dominates most independent shops.

Column and Frame Construction Compared

Both Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger CL10 use welded-steel columns approximately 6 inches wide by 4.5 inches deep, with wall thickness in the 7-gauge to 10-gauge range depending on year of manufacture. Rotary’s columns run marginally thicker at the base plate weldment — the extra weld metal is visible if you look closely and translates to about 20 lbs more steel per column. Challenger’s columns are cleaner in weld appearance but functionally equivalent in load rating. Both are ALI Gold certified to lift 10,000 lb symmetrically or asymmetrically depending on arm configuration.

Base plates on both lifts are similar — approximately 8 inches wide by 24 inches long, drilled for four wedge anchors per column. Rotary specifies 3/4-inch anchors as standard; Challenger specifies 5/8-inch. This does not mean one is stronger — both anchor systems exceed the tensile requirement for a 10K rated load — but the Rotary hardware kit ships heavier and the anchor hole pattern is slightly wider. If you are installing on a marginally thin slab, the Rotary anchor spec has slightly more edge-distance tolerance. For a high-cycle 2 post car lift in a tire rotation shop, either column design will run 20 years without frame issues. Frame is not the differentiator between these two lifts. Where they diverge is in the moving parts — cables, arms, safeties — that see thousands of cycles per year in a busy shop.

Arm Geometry and Reach on Each Lift

Both lifts run 3-stage telescoping asymmetric arms with drop-end pad extensions. Rotary SPOA10 arms extend from a minimum 36 inches to a maximum 62 inches per arm; Challenger CL10 extends from 34 inches to 59 inches. Rotary’s reach envelope is roughly 5 percent larger — meaningful if you regularly work on long-wheelbase pickups but almost invisible on a passenger-car-heavy tire rotation shop. Both lifts accommodate the same range of vehicles for typical shop work.

Drop-end pad geometry is where a real feel difference shows up. Rotary’s drop-end arms have a slightly lower minimum pad height — about 3.5 inches vs Challenger’s 4 inches. On low-clearance sports cars and lowered trucks, that half-inch matters. On a Ford Explorer or a Toyota Camry (the vehicles that dominate tire rotation billing), it does not. Padded arm restraint engagement feels similar on both — a positive click at the correct position, audible and tactile. Some techs prefer the Challenger’s slightly stiffer restraint spring; others prefer Rotary’s smoother release lever. This is a preference call, not a quality call. Both lifts have restraint systems that meet ALI standards. If your shop does a lot of custom, exotic, or aftermarket-suspension vehicles, spend an hour with each brand’s arm before deciding. For a standard passenger-car tire rotation shop in central Iowa, either arm design will serve you well. This is not the deciding factor for most 2 post car lift buyers we work with.

Cable and Sheave Design: The Big Differentiator

Here is where the two lifts genuinely differ. Rotary SPOA10 uses a 3/8-inch 6×25 IWRC galvanized equalizer cable with hardened-steel sheaves that ride on sealed ball bearings. Challenger CL10 uses a 3/8-inch 6×19 IWRC cable with bronze-bushing sheaves. Neither design is wrong. Ball-bearing sheaves run smoother under high cycle counts and are quieter; bronze-bushing sheaves cost less to manufacture and are easier to service in the field with a simple grease injection.

For a high-cycle tire rotation shop cycling the lift 30 to 50 times per day, the Rotary bearing sheave will typically last longer between service events — 6 to 8 years vs 4 to 6 years for the bronze bushing before showing wear. Cable service intervals are similar for both — inspect at 30, 90, 365 day intervals, replace at 4-6 years for high-cycle service. Cable replacement cost is comparable (cable parts $180 to $220, labor 90 minutes). Where Rotary pulls ahead is service noise: a bearing sheave stays quieter through its service life. A shop running 8 bays of Rotary sounds different than a shop running 8 bays of Challenger; anyone who has walked both can attest. For a single-lift independent shop, this difference is small but real. For the pure durability of a well-maintained 2 post car lift, both brands will run 15+ years in typical tire rotation service.

Hydraulic System and Power Unit Differences

Both lifts use single-cylinder hydraulic systems with the cylinder integrated into the master column. Cylinder bore and stroke are similar on the two lifts (roughly 3.5-inch bore, 43-inch stroke on both, though revision numbers differ across model years). Both use gear-pump power units with 3 HP single-phase or 3 HP three-phase motors depending on configuration. Both power units include a manual bleeder valve, an emergency lowering lever, and a filtered reservoir with a translucent fluid level indicator.

Detail differences: Rotary’s power unit uses a slightly larger reservoir (4 gallons vs Challenger’s 3 gallons), which lets the fluid cool between cycles more effectively. On a busy shop day with continuous cycling, that reservoir difference reduces fluid temperature by 5 to 10 degrees F. Challenger’s power unit is slightly quieter at idle — Challenger uses a rubber-isolated motor mount that dampens vibration transmitted to the column. Both use standard AW32 hydraulic fluid; both call for a fluid change every 24 months in commercial service. Neither has a hydraulic system that is materially more reliable than the other — we service both weekly and see similar failure patterns (hoses at 8-12 years, pump internal seals at 12-15 years, cylinder seals at 15-20 years). Hydraulic system reliability is not a real differentiator between Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger CL10 for a 2 post car lift customer. Both will run their design life if maintained per manufacturer schedule.

Safety Lock Engagement and Feel

Both lifts have positive mechanical safety locks that engage automatically at multiple detents throughout the lift stroke. Rotary uses a spring-loaded pawl that drops into machined notches on the column bar with a distinct audible click; Challenger uses a similar pawl with slightly different notch geometry. Both systems disengage via a lever at the master column that lifts the pawl clear before descent.

The feel differs. Rotary’s pawls engage with a sharper, higher-pitched click. Challenger’s engagement is a slightly softer, lower-pitched thunk. Neither is better; techs develop a preference for whichever they learned on. What matters is that both systems audibly announce engagement at every detent — if you cannot hear the click through normal shop noise, either the shop is too loud or the safety system needs service. In a busy tire rotation shop where techs cycle safeties dozens of times per day, that audible feedback is a real safety feature. Both brands maintain safety-lock engagement force well beyond ALI requirements. In 20 years of servicing both lifts, we have seen exactly one Rotary safety lock failure (a bent pawl from an off-center overload) and two Challenger safety lock failures (both bushing wear on the pawl pivot). Statistical noise, not a brand pattern. For safety-lock reliability, treat these two brands as equivalent. Both meet or exceed ALI ALCTV structural and safety standards.

Parts Availability and Service Response Times

Both brands have strong U.S. parts networks. Rotary parts ship from multiple U.S. distributors (we are one, based in central Iowa) with typical order-to-doorstep times of 2 to 4 business days for common wear items and 5 to 10 days for less-common structural parts. Challenger parts ship from a smaller distributor network — 3 to 6 business days for common items, 7 to 14 days for structural. Both are acceptable for a working commercial shop; both would be considered excellent by home hobbyist standards.

The service response difference matters more than the parts availability difference. Rotary has a slightly larger network of factory-trained field technicians in the Midwest, meaning if you need on-site diagnosis and repair, response time is often faster. In central Iowa specifically, we service both brands within 48 hours of a call for critical failures. For a tire rotation shop that loses $200 to $500 per lift-hour when down, that response time is worth more than the small purchase-price delta between brands. If your shop is located in a market with strong local service for one brand and weaker service for the other, that alone can decide the purchase. In our central Iowa territory, both brands are well-supported and we recommend either based on your other decision criteria — arm reach, sheave design, tech preference, resale plans. For a 2 post car lift buyer without a strong local preference, the two are functional equivalents on parts and service.

Which 2 Post Car Lift Wins for Your Specific Shop

The honest answer: it depends. If you run a high-cycle tire rotation shop with 30-plus rotations per bay per day, Rotary SPOA10 has the edge on cable sheave longevity and reservoir cooling. If you run a moderate-cycle general shop with 10-20 lifts per day, Challenger CL10 is functionally equivalent and typically retails $150-$250 cheaper on our shelf. If you plan to resell the lift within 5-8 years, Rotary holds resale value slightly better in the Midwest market. If you value the quietest possible operation, Rotary again — but only marginally. If you value the lowest first-cost, Challenger.

Our central Iowa pro shop customer went Rotary SPOA10 after we walked through this exact side-by-side.
