Choosing a 2 post car lift feels simple until you start pricing them, and then suddenly you are staring at capacity ratings, asymmetric versus symmetric arms, overhead versus baseplate, and a spread of numbers that doesn’t seem to line up with anything. We install and service lifts out of Ames, Iowa, and the conversation we have most often starts with a budget number and ends somewhere completely different once we walk through the building. A crew chief for a regional dirt-track team told us he wanted the cheapest thing that would hold a stock car, and by the end of the call he had a taller, wider unit that made his whole Friday-night thrash go faster. Here is the decision tree we actually use.

Start With the Building, Not the Budget
Every decision tree we draw starts with three measurements, and none of them are dollars. Ceiling height, slab thickness, and clear bay width. If you tell us you have eleven feet of ceiling, we are already down to a short-column or baseplate configuration before we discuss capacity at all. If you have fourteen feet, the whole catalog is open and an overhead-beam unit becomes the better buy. We had a caller in North Dakota with a hard 139-inch height limit who assumed an overhead lift was still possible; it wasn’t, and knowing that up front saved him from ordering the wrong machine and eating freight both directions.
Slab thickness is the other gate. Manufacturers publish a minimum, and it is usually four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with reinforcement, but published minimums assume the slab is sound and the anchor zone is not near an edge or an expansion joint. We have drilled test holes in central Iowa garages that measured five inches on one side of the bay and three and a half on the other, because the original pour was done in stages. When that happens the honest answer is a cut-and-pour pad, not a smaller lift. A garage owner near Unionville, Missouri asked us for something that “won’t drop a car” — that starts with what the anchors are gripping, not with the brand badge on the column.
Capacity: Why 10,000 lb Is the Default
Most shops and nearly every serious home garage land on a 10,000 lb rating, and there is a good reason for that. It covers three-quarter-ton pickups, most crew cabs, loaded vans, and anything with a car body on it with a wide margin. A caller in Grand Forks told us his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 pounds and asked whether he could save money going lighter. He could have, on paper. But the arm reach and the column height on the heavier-duty models were better suited to his trucks, and the price gap between a 9,000 and a 10,000 lb unit is small enough that we almost never recommend going down.
Above 10,000 pounds, the questions change. A 12,000 or 15,000 lb 2 post car lift is a different animal — heavier columns, taller overhead beams, three-stage arms, and anchor requirements that push slab thickness past what most residential pours can handle. We get calls from fleet shops asking for 14,000 pound capacity, and when we dig in, half of them actually need a four-post or mobile columns because the vehicles are dually chassis cabs with wheelbases the arms can’t reach comfortably. Capacity is not just a number to beat; it is a proxy for the geometry of what you are lifting. Tell us the three heaviest vehicles you actually service, not the one you might buy someday.
Overhead Beam or Baseplate: The Real Trade-off
An overhead-beam lift routes the equalization cables and hydraulic line through a top crossmember, leaving the floor between the columns completely clear. That is the layout most professional shops want, because you roll transmission jacks, floor jacks, and creepers straight through without a trip hazard. The trade-off is height: you need roughly twelve feet minimum, and more if you want to raise a tall van or a lifted truck to full extension without the shutoff bar cutting you short.
A baseplate model moves those lines into a low channel on the floor. You lose the flush floor but gain nearly two feet of usable lift height in a low building. For an Ames homeowner with an eleven-foot ceiling, that is the difference between owning a lift and not owning one. We installed a baseplate 2 post car lift in a converted machine shed outside town where the trusses sat at eleven-two, and the owner has been running it for years with no complaints beyond occasionally rolling a jack over the channel. The mistake we see is people buying an overhead unit because it looked better in photos, then discovering at installation that the beam collides with a garage door track or opener rail. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the swing path of the door, not to the peak of the ceiling.
Symmetric, Asymmetric, and Arm Geometry
Symmetric lifts place the columns directly across from each other and split the vehicle weight evenly front to rear. They handle trucks and vans beautifully and give you long, straight arms. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns roughly thirty degrees and use short front arms and long rear arms so the vehicle sits back in the bay and the doors clear the columns. If you work on passenger cars all day and need to open a driver’s door without hitting steel, asymmetric wins.
The problem is that most shops do both. That is why versatile-arm designs exist — expandable top beams, three-stage telescoping front arms, and drop-end arms with low pad heights for sports cars. A BendPak XPR-10S, for instance, uses an expandable top beam so the same unit can be set up wide-drive-through or narrow, and the telescoping arms let you reach forward on a long-wheelbase truck and pull in tight on a Miata. A Rotary SPO12 or Challenger CL10 gives you comparable flexibility with different pad kits. For the dirt-track crew chief we mentioned, arm geometry mattered more than capacity, because his stock car frame rails wanted specific pickup points and stock pads would have contacted body panels. A set of frame-cradle adapters solved it for less than a tank of race fuel.
Budget Tiers and What Each One Buys You
We talk in tiers instead of exact prices because freight, options, and install vary too much. The entry tier is where most hobby buyers start — a value-brand baseplate or clearfloor unit, ten thousand pounds, basic pads, no frills. Callers regularly tell us they want to stay near four or five thousand dollars all in, and that tier exists and does work. What you give up is fit and finish, arm-restraint refinement, powder-coat durability, and the depth of parts support five or ten years out.
The middle tier is where we send most working shops: a name-brand 2 post car lift with a real dealer network, ALI Gold certification, and a parts book we can pull from tomorrow morning. The top tier adds heavier columns, higher capacity, longer warranties, and options like third-stage arms or synchronized power units. Somebody who said he didn’t want to spend ten thousand dollars on a lift bought a mid-tier unit from us after we walked him through what happens when a proprietary cylinder on a discount lift becomes unavailable. That is the whole argument for spending up: not the steel, the availability of the parts. Bay Layout and Workflow Around the Lift
Where the lift goes determines how fast your day moves. We ask people to walk the bay with a tape and mark the column footprints, then mark where a rolling toolbox, a bead-blaster, or a parts cart normally lives. Two-post columns need swing clearance for the arms plus a working aisle on both sides — three feet minimum on each side is livable, four is comfortable. If you park the lift against a wall to save floor space, you have just made every job a one-sided job.
Overhead obstructions matter as much as walls. Lights, ductwork, unit heaters, and garage-door openers all end up in the swing zone. On a job in Marion we relocated two shop lights and a gas line before setting columns, which added a few hours but avoided a permanent headache. Also think about drive-through approach: a 2 post car lift with the columns set square to the door lets you back a car in straight, while an angled install forces a three-point turn every time. Installation, Inspection, and Living With It
Plenty of buyers tell us they will handle the install themselves, and some genuinely can. A caller in Grand Forks with a forklift and a helper did not need us, and we sold him the equipment and shipped it. But self-install means you own the anchor torque, the column plumb, the cable equalization, the bleed procedure, and the first-cycle load test. Get any of those wrong and the lift will still go up — it will just wear unevenly and tell you about it in two years.
Once it is running, the maintenance list is short. Check the equalization cables for broken strands and correct tension, grease the column slide blocks, inspect the arm restraints, watch the fluid level, and cycle the locks so you hear all four engage. We get calls like the Challenger owner whose motor ran and fluid was full but nothing moved — that is usually a bad check valve, a lowering valve stuck open, or air in the system, and it is a same-day fix if you have the right parts.
