The crew chief for a small dirt-track team in Ankeny called us in February with a clear problem and a fuzzy budget: they were pulling wheels and swapping rotors on the hauler ramp every weekend, their backs were done, and they wanted a 2 post car lift in the shop before the season opened. What they didn’t have was a plan for how a 2,000-pound crate was going to get off a semi trailer and into their building. That second problem is the one that trips up more buyers than any spec sheet ever does. So this article is a decision tree — start at budget, work down through capacity and configuration, and end with freight and unloading, which is where the real surprises hide.

Step One: Start With the Number You’ll Actually Spend

Every conversation should start here, because budget determines which branch of the tree you go down and there’s no point admiring equipment you won’t buy. Broadly, the market breaks into three tiers. Entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 lb units from value brands land in the low-to-mid four figures. Mid-tier equipment with better arm geometry, thicker steel, and a real parts pipeline sits meaningfully above that. Commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger models — the ones dealership techs cycle twenty times a day for fifteen years — start well above the hobby tier and go up from there.

The Ankeny crew chief walked in wanting to spend around what an entry-level unit costs. We get that number a lot; we also get calls from people who bought at that price and are now hunting cables and carriage parts for a brand that no longer answers the phone. So the honest framing we give: if this is a weekend hobby shop lifting the same two cars a few times a month, an entry-tier unit is genuinely fine and we’ll sell you one. If you’re cycling it daily, or if downtime costs you money, spend up. The delta between tiers is usually smaller than one week of lost shop revenue. Also budget separately for freight, electrical, and anchors — those three items commonly add ten to twenty percent on top of the equipment, and pretending otherwise just makes for an unpleasant surprise later.

Step Two: Capacity, Weighted Toward What You Actually Lift

Capacity is the easiest decision to overthink and the easiest to get wrong in the cheap direction. The two most common ratings we ship are 10,000 lb and 12,000 lb, with 15,000 lb for shops that regularly see one-ton duallies and heavier work trucks. A racing team lifting a stock car, a tow rig, and a couple of daily drivers is comfortably inside 10,000 lb. But we ask a follow-up question every time: what’s the heaviest thing you might ever put on it, including three years from now?

We’ve had customers tell us their heaviest vehicle is 6,000 lbs — which is true, until somebody’s diesel three-quarter-ton needs brakes and it goes up anyway. Capacity headroom is cheap insurance and the price gap between a 10K and a 12K is usually modest. The other half of capacity is arm reach and pad height. Low, wide-bodied cars need drop-end or telescoping arms and low-profile pad stacks to reach the pinch welds without contacting rockers. Trucks need arms that swing wide enough to reach factory lift points on a long wheelbase. This is where symmetric versus asymmetric comes in: symmetric columns face each other squarely and balance the load evenly, which suits trucks and vans; asymmetric columns are rotated so the vehicle sits back in the bay, giving you more door-opening room, which matters if you spend your days climbing in and out of sedans.

Step Three: Baseplate or Overhead — Ceiling Height Decides

Measure your ceiling before you shop. Not your door — your ceiling, at the lowest obstruction over the lift footprint. Clearfloor overhead models put the equalizer assembly and hydraulic lines in a beam across the top, which keeps the floor completely clear between the columns. That’s the configuration commercial shops prefer because nothing interrupts a floor jack, a transmission jack, or a creeper. But it needs height — typically twelve feet minimum, and more if you want full rise on a tall vehicle.

Baseplate models route the equalizer cables and hoses through a low channel across the floor between the columns. You give up a completely clean floor and you gain roughly two feet of usable rise. In an eleven-to-twelve-foot building, baseplate is often the only option that makes sense, and the floor channel is a much smaller nuisance than people expect — it’s a couple of inches tall and you learn to step over it in a day. The Ankeny shop had about thirteen feet of clear height with a truss low point around twelve-six, so we went overhead and they kept the clean floor for rolling toolboxes and brake lathes. One more measurement to take: distance from the intended column locations to the nearest wall, and whether there’s a loft, mezzanine, or door track in the swing path of the arms. We’ve had jobs where a perfectly good unit had to be shifted eighteen inches because a garage door spring assembly was in the way.

Step Four: How a 2 Post Car Lift Actually Ships

Here’s the part nobody researches. A two-post ships LTL freight on a pallet — usually the two columns strapped together laying down, plus a carton of arms, hardware, and the power unit. Total shipping weight commonly runs 1,600 to 2,400 pounds depending on capacity. The columns are long, awkward, and heavy at one end. This is not a two-guys-and-a-hand-truck situation.

You have three realistic unloading paths. First, you own or can borrow a forklift with enough capacity and fork length — this is the cleanest option and the one that gets equipment inside fastest. Second, you pay for liftgate service, which lowers the pallet to ground level at the curb; from there you still need to move it, and dragging columns across gravel is how anchor holes get bent and paint gets gouged. Third, you deliver to a terminal and pick it up with a trailer, which is often the cheapest line item and the most work. The racing team had access to a skid loader with forks at a neighboring business, which solved it in ten minutes. When you order, tell us which of those three applies, because the freight quote and the delivery appointment both depend on it. Residential deliveries almost always need a liftgate and a limited-access surcharge, and the driver will not help you unload — that’s not what the tariff pays for.

Step Five: Freight Damage, Inspection, and Signing the BOL

Inspect before you sign. This is the single most valuable paragraph in this article. Freight carriers handle long steel with forklifts and straps, and columns occasionally arrive with bent mounting flanges, crushed carton corners, or a dinged power unit. Once you sign the bill of lading clean, the claim gets very hard to win, and you own the problem.

Walk the pallet before the driver leaves. Look at the base flanges on both columns, the top plates, the carriage rollers if visible, and the power unit carton. Count the pieces against the packing list — arms, pins, pads, hardware bag, overhead beam or floor channel, cables, and the hydraulic hoses. If anything is short or damaged, write it on the BOL in specific language before you sign: “column base flange bent, driver’s side” beats “possible damage.” Photograph everything while it’s still on the truck. Then call us. We handle the claim and get replacement parts moving, and we’d much rather do that on delivery day than three weeks later when you’ve started assembly and discovered the equalizer cable is kinked. In practice damage is uncommon — most shipments arrive clean — but the five minutes of inspection is free and the alternative is expensive. Also: don’t schedule your installer for the same hour as the delivery. Give yourself a day of buffer.

Step Six: Install Day, First Cycle, and What Comes Next

Once the freight is inside, install is straightforward for anyone comfortable with a rotary hammer and a torque wrench, and we do it turnkey for customers across Iowa who’d rather not. The sequence is: verify concrete thickness and layout, mark and drill anchor holes, set and plumb the columns with shims, install the overhead beam or floor channel, route cables and hoses, mount and fill the power unit, wire it, then bleed and cycle empty before you ever put a vehicle on it. Torque the anchors to spec and re-check them after the first week — new concrete anchors relax slightly under initial load.

The Ankeny team was doing rotor swaps on the lift within a week of delivery, and the crew chief’s comment was that the wheels-off work that used to take an afternoon on ramps now takes an hour. That’s the actual return: not the equipment, the time. After install, put a maintenance rhythm in place. Grease the carriage slides and check cable tension monthly, inspect the safety locks and the equalizer cables quarterly, and change hydraulic fluid on the manufacturer’s interval. Cables and lock assemblies are the two wear items that end most units prematurely, and both are inexpensive to replace on schedule and expensive to ignore.
