A mobile mechanic in Dubuque called us in late fall about moving his differential-fluid and driveline work off the driveway and into a rented shop bay. His question: could a 2 post car lift fit under a 10-and-a-half-foot ceiling? At Auto Lift Services, we get this call weekly from Iowa techs going from mobile to fixed. The short answer is sometimes, and the long answer depends on which model, which frame style, and which door your shop has. Here’s how the Dubuque install actually went.

The bay we were working with
The Dubuque shop was a converted single-bay garage in a row of leased units near the industrial park. Ceiling height at the lowest point was 10 feet 6 inches. The bay door was a 9-foot roll-up. Concrete was original — the building went up in 1998 by county records, and the developer had used a 5-inch slab with what looked like a 6-inch rebar grid. Not perfect, but well within spec for a commercial 2 post car lift. The problem was the ceiling. A standard overhead 10K lift wants roughly 12 feet clear at the crossbeam. That was two feet more than the mobile mechanic had. Some quick-lube-scale overhead lifts fit in 11 feet, but 10.5 was going to require either a floor-plate configuration or an extended-column overhead with the beam raised only if we could find one that shipped short. We walked the bay together on a Tuesday afternoon and measured every dimension: door opening height and width, ceiling clearance at the front, middle, and back of the bay, distance from the intended lift location to the roll-up door, and the height of any HVAC duct or overhead lighting.
Why floor-plate won on this install
Given the 10.5-foot ceiling, a floor-plate 2 post car lift was the only workable option. A floor-plate lift moves the crossbar from overhead down to the concrete between the columns — you drive over the bar every time you pull a car in. The upside is full ceiling clearance above the vehicle, which meant the Dubuque mechanic could raise a Ford Escape to full extension without the roof hitting the beam. The downside was the crossbar itself, which becomes a floor obstacle for jacks and creepers. We spec’d a Rotary SPOA10 floor-plate configuration. The bar sits about three inches proud of the concrete, low enough that most floor jacks roll over it without complaint. For the differential-fluid work that was the mechanic’s main revenue — quick jobs, low creeper time — the trade-off worked. If he’d been running long transmission jobs where he spent hours on his back rolling around under the car, floor-plate would have been the wrong pick. Matching the lift frame style to the actual work the shop does is the piece a lot of first-time buyers miss. We walked him through that decision before the order went in.
Ceiling height, door swing, and the roll-up door
The 9-foot roll-up door was the second constraint on this 2 post car lift install. When a lift is at full extension, the vehicle raises to about 6 feet ground-to-tire. Add vehicle height and you’re at 11 or 12 feet total for an SUV. That doesn’t matter if the door is closed, but it matters if the tech wants ventilation with the door open. The 9-foot roll-up meant nothing at full lift would come near the door frame in vertical dimension. What did matter was the door swing on the vehicles going up. On a symmetric floor-plate lift, the driver door of a mid-size SUV usually catches the column at about 40 degrees of open. The Dubuque mechanic’s differential fluid work was mostly light trucks and SUVs — Explorers, Silverados, Highlanders. Door swing was a live problem. We solved it by positioning the lift asymmetric-style, offset toward the back of the bay so vehicles pulled in with the driver seat position slightly rearward of column center. It’s not a true asymmetric lift, but the offset install gave him enough door clearance for the vehicle mix he was seeing.
Concrete inspection and anchor work
Before we drilled a single hole for the 2 post car lift, we ran a Schmidt hammer on the slab to verify the 3,000 PSI minimum. Reading came back at 3,400 — solid. The 5-inch slab thickness we confirmed by drilling a small witness hole in a corner of the intended footprint and dropping a bent wire in to feel for the far edge. Anchor work on a floor-plate SPOA10 uses 3/4-inch wedge anchors on each column base and additional anchors on the floor bar itself. Total anchor count for this install was 16 — six per column base, four for the floor bar. We cored all holes with a diamond bit, blew them clean, and set the anchors with a torque wrench to manufacturer spec. Anchor torque is the step where DIY installs most often go wrong. Under-torque and the anchor pulls out under load. Over-torque and you crush the concrete at the anchor throat, weakening the hold. We spec the torque and check every anchor on every install. The Dubuque install took about six hours from crate to first cycle test. The mechanic was lifting a customer truck the next morning.
The first jobs and how they informed the setup
Within a week of the 2 post car lift going in, the Dubuque mechanic ran three differential fluid changes, one wheel bearing, and one full brake job. He called us at day 10 with two follow-ups. First, the arm adapters that shipped standard didn’t reach the factory pinch weld on a first-gen Silverado — he needed a longer adapter or a truck-frame adapter. We shipped a set of truck adapters overnight from our Ames stock. Second, the crossbar was catching his rolling toolbox. We recommended a low-profile toolbox cart that clears the bar. Neither issue was a lift problem — both were common first-month adjustments. That’s normal on any lift install, and we tell customers up front to expect a two-week shakedown period where accessories get added and workflows shift. The mobile-to-fixed transition also changed his job pricing. Suddenly he could quote jobs that required a lift — differential service on stubby drivelines that need the wheels dropped for CV alignment, transmission pan drops that need overhead access. Revenue per hour went up. Six weeks in he called us to spec a second bay.
The 90-day inspection and what we look for
Every 2 post car lift install we do includes a 90-day return inspection. We show up, cycle the lift through full range, listen for cylinder noise, check equalizer cable tension, verify anchor torque, inspect the safety lock engagement on both columns, drain a sample of hydraulic fluid to check for contamination, and top off the reservoir. On the Dubuque lift at 90 days, everything was clean. Equalizer cables had stretched slightly (normal on any new lift) and we retensioned them. Anchor torque was still within spec. Hydraulic fluid was clear and free of moisture. The mechanic reported one squeak in the drive-side column at full extension that we tracked to a dry safety-lock pawl — a shot of dry lube fixed it. That’s the level of detail a 90-day looks for. The lift will run for years between service calls after the first inspection settles the shakedown. What the Dubuque install cost, all-in
Rolling up the numbers on the Dubuque 2 post car lift install: a Rotary SPOA10 floor-plate configuration, freight from Ames with our own truck and unloading crew, standard 10K accessories plus a truck adapter set added at day 10, install labor for a one-day two-tech job, and the 90-day inspection. All-in the delivered-and-installed number landed in the low-to-mid teens of thousands. That’s before the truck adapters we shipped, which added a low-hundreds line item. The mobile mechanic’s revenue math on the lift paid it back inside seven months on differential and driveline work he couldn’t do from a driveway. He also saw insurance costs drop when he moved from mobile to fixed with a certified lift — his commercial policy dropped shop liability into a more standard band.
