A typical commercial 10,000-pound lift ships with a 220-volt single-phase motor drawing about fifteen amps under full load. That is a dedicated 30-amp circuit with a 30-amp breaker and 10-gauge wire, code minimum. Anything smaller and you will trip the breaker every time the pump kicks under a heavy load.
The three real motor choices you will see on a 2 post car lift spec sheet are 110-volt single-phase, 220-volt single-phase, and 208 or 230-volt three-phase. A 110-volt option exists on some smaller lifts, mostly older residential units, but the motor is undersized for a race shop with 3,800-pound cars going up ten times a week. Skip it. A 220-volt single-phase is the sweet spot for a Missouri hobby or small-race shop. Three-phase only makes sense if your building is already wired for it, and most rural Missouri shops are not.
What Your Butler County Building Probably Has
Most residential and light-commercial shops in northern Missouri run 200-amp single-phase service from the pole. The Budget Fork: Where the Circuit Cost Really Lands
Here is the budget decision-tree branch shop owners skip. The lift itself is the sticker-price question, but the delivered-and-running cost includes the electrical run, and that number varies wildly. If your panel is on the same wall as the lift, expect a licensed electrician to charge in the low four-figure range for a code-legal 220-volt run with a shutoff. If your panel is fifty feet across the shop, the same run doubles. If your slab does not have conduit paths and you are drilling, it can triple.

That duty cycle is generous on the motor and even more generous on the wiring. You are not going to burn out a 220-volt single-phase circuit on this workload no matter what.
What you do want, for storage use, is a lift with proven safety locks and a mechanical lock ladder that engages at intervals up the column. Race cars sitting on a lift for six months put constant load on the arms and cables. A hydraulic system will slowly bleed pressure over that time; the mechanical locks are what actually hold the car. Model Numbers That Match a Race Storage Bay
For a northern Missouri storage bay, we most often quote a 10,000-pound asymmetric with either a low-ceiling overhead or a symmetric floorplate, depending on your ceiling. Rotary SPO10 and Challenger CL10 are the two we spec most often. Both run on 220-volt single-phase, both have arm restraints and mechanical lock ladders, and both fit a 12-foot ceiling. If your race cars are all under 3,500 pounds, a 9,000-pound lift is technically enough, but we do not recommend under-capacity storage lifts because your fleet may grow.
For a shop with a 14-foot ceiling, the same models are available with a taller overhead that gives you a full 79-inch lift height, which matters if you also want to walk under the car in fully-raised position to do off-season underbody work. Common Wiring Mistakes We See on Missouri Installs
