Choosing a 2 post car lift when alignment work is on your list is a different conversation than picking one for oil changes, and a collector outside Marion found that out the hard way before he ever called us. He has eight vehicles — a mix of British roadsters, a ’90s sport sedan, and a modern daily — and he wanted to stop hauling everything to a shop for a toe-and-camber check every time he changed a tie rod. Why Alignment Work Changes the Spec Sheet
Most people shopping for a two-post are thinking about clearance and capacity. Those matter, but alignment adds a third requirement almost nobody mentions online: the vehicle has to sit level and stay level while the suspension is loaded, and you have to be able to reach the adjusters and turn the wheels freely. That means arms placed at manufacturer lift points, a carriage that stays square, and enough room in front of the columns to swing a wheel lock-to-lock without hitting a post.
It also means you need to be honest about what “alignment work” means for you. A full four-wheel alignment with camera targets and a live readout is a different animal from setting toe with a tape measure and string, or checking camber with a magnetic gauge after replacing a control arm. Our Marion customer was firmly in the second camp — hobby-grade but careful, and he wanted repeatable numbers, not certification-grade printouts. That let us skip the dedicated alignment rack conversation entirely. A well-installed, dead-level two-post with turnplates on the arms gets a patient hobbyist very close. If he ever wants true production alignment volume, that is a four-post rack with built-in slip plates and a whole different budget, and we told him so up front rather than selling him something that would disappoint him.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric: The Argument We Had
He came in wanting asymmetric because a forum told him to. The logic is real: asymmetric designs rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use shorter front arms and longer rear arms, which pushes the vehicle back so the doors clear the posts. If you climb in and out of cars on the lift a lot — and a collector does — that is genuinely nice. The tradeoff is that the load distribution shifts, the front pads sit farther forward relative to the columns, and on some vehicles you have less flexibility in pad placement.
Symmetric, by contrast, centers the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms and splits the weight roughly 50/50. It is the better choice for trucks, vans, long-wheelbase cars, and anything where you want maximum pad reach. His problem was that his fleet spanned a tiny roadster and a full-size modern crossover, and symmetric handled both ends of that range more gracefully. We ended up on a versatile symmetric setup with telescoping arms and drop-end front arms — the drop-ends being the part that makes low-clearance cars possible without ramps. Door clearance on the roadsters is tighter than asymmetric would have been, but he can open a door far enough to get in, and he has full pad flexibility on the crossover. A year in he says we were right, which is not something we get in writing very often.
Clearfloor or Baseplate in a Barn With a 12-Foot Ceiling
The next fork was overhead versus floorplate. A clearfloor design puts the equalizer cables and hoses in an overhead beam, leaving the floor completely open — huge for alignment work, because there is nothing under the car to trip over when you are crawling around with a gauge and nothing to interfere with a creeper. The cost is height. You typically need 12 feet minimum, and if your rise plus vehicle height plus beam thickness exceeds what you have, the shutoff bar becomes your limiter.
He measured 12 feet 2 inches to the bottom of the trusses, with a light fixture we relocated. That was enough for a clearfloor model, but only just, and it means the crossover cannot go to full rise. A baseplate design would have removed the ceiling constraint completely, and we do sell plenty of them to guys with 10-foot garages — but the floor-level crossover tube would have been in the way of exactly the work he bought the equipment for. For an alignment-focused 2 post car lift, clearfloor wins whenever the ceiling allows it. If yours does not, our advice is honestly to reconsider whether a mid-rise scissor or a four-post makes more sense than a compromised two-post. We would rather lose the sale than install something that annoys you every weekend.
The Slab Problem and What We Did About It
Alignment work punishes an unlevel installation more than any other job, because a carriage that is out of square by a quarter inch translates into readings that never repeat. His barn had two problems: a slab that measured between four and five inches depending on where we drilled, and a control joint running right through where the driver-side column wanted to sit. Anchoring within a few inches of a joint or a slab edge is how you get anchors that pull out under load.
We moved the whole footprint about 14 inches toward the center of the bay, which cost him a little maneuvering room but put both columns on solid, uncracked concrete well away from the joint. Then we shimmed. We set the columns plumb with a laser rather than trusting the floor, torqued anchors to manufacturer spec with a calibrated wrench, and re-checked torque after cycling the lift loaded. Where the slab came in thin, we specified longer anchors and pulled a test anchor to confirm it held before committing. In some barns the honest answer is a saw-cut and a new pad poured to spec — we have done that too, and it adds a week and real money but it is cheaper than a column that walks. Turnplates, Toe Plates, and Doing It on a Budget
Once the lift was in, the alignment setup was almost embarrassingly cheap. He bought a pair of steel turnplates that sit on the lift pads, a set of toe plates with tape measures, a magnetic camber-caster gauge, and a decent digital angle finder. Total investment was a fraction of what a single alignment machine bay costs. The workflow: raise to comfortable height, verify the arms are all seated on the lift points, set the vehicle down onto the turnplates, jounce the suspension, and take readings.
The critical habit is checking level in both axes every single time before you take a number. He keeps a two-foot machinist level in a drawer next to the lift and lays it across the arms front-to-back and side-to-side. If the carriages have drifted even slightly out of sync — which happens as equalizer cables stretch in the first few months — the readings lie. He found exactly that in month four, retensioned the cables, and his numbers tightened up dramatically. That is not a defect, that is break-in, and every new two-post does it. That is it — no repairs, no parts failures. His only unplanned expense was a set of taller pad extensions after he discovered the crossover’s rocker panels sat higher than his roadsters’ by four inches. Year two he expects an annual inspection and maybe a fluid change. What We Would Tell the Next Collector Who Calls
Start with the tape measure, not the catalog. Ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, slab thickness confirmed by drilling not guessing, door width, and the distance from your intended column line to any wall or loft. Then list your heaviest vehicle and your lowest vehicle, because those two numbers drive capacity and whether you need drop-end arms or ramps. Almost every bad two-post purchase we get called to fix traces back to skipping one of those measurements.
Second, decide honestly what you will do on it. If it is brakes, exhaust, and suspension, a two-post is the right tool and you will never regret it. If it is mostly storage with occasional service, a four-post with rolling jacks is the smarter buy.
