Why Body Shops Choose a 2 Post Car Lift for CV Work
CV axle and half-shaft replacement is a wheels-off job. The wheel comes off, the axle nut comes out, the tie rod separates, and the shaft slides out of the transmission. Every step benefits from the vehicle in the air with the wheels hanging free, which is exactly what a 2 post car lift delivers. On a four-post you need rolling jacks and a full re-setup for wheels-off work; on a scissor you cannot get vertical clearance for a knuckle strut extraction. Two posts is the right tool.
For a body shop foreman in Iowa City doing four or five CV axles a week alongside collision repair, the workflow gain is significant. Two-Twenty Single Phase vs Three Phase for Shop Wiring
The first electrical question we ask a body shop is what power service is at the panel. Most single-bay body shops in Iowa City are running two-forty single phase from residential-style service, and single phase two-forty is what most modern 2 post car lift powerpacks are wired for out of the box. Three-phase is common in commercial-zoned industrial parks and multi-bay shops with dedicated three-phase service.
The lift you buy needs to match your service. A single-phase powerpack cannot run on three-phase, and vice versa, without a motor swap that voids warranty. What we do at quoting time is ask the foreman to photograph his panel with the door open so we can read the main breaker size and identify single-versus-three phase. If the shop is on single phase, we spec a single-phase two-forty powerpack. If they are on three phase and have a spare breaker, we spec three phase because it is a smoother, cooler-running motor with lower running amps and longer expected motor life. Either works fine on a body-shop duty cycle.
Amp Draw and Breaker Sizing on a Two-Post
A single-phase two-forty powerpack on a ten-thousand pound 2 post car lift draws roughly fifteen to twenty running amps and pulls a locked-rotor inrush closer to sixty amps at start. That means a dedicated thirty-amp two-pole breaker is the correct sizing, with ten-gauge wire on runs under seventy-five feet, eight-gauge for longer runs. Do not put the lift on a shared breaker with other equipment; the inrush current at start will trip the breaker under load if a compressor or welder is running on the same circuit.
Three-phase two-oh-eight powerpacks draw about ten to twelve running amps per leg with lower inrush, and a twenty-amp three-pole breaker is typical. Twelve-gauge THHN on the runs is usually enough for most bay layouts. What we always tell body shop owners: get an electrician to pull the actual circuit. Do not run this on cord-and-plug or on an extension. Every lift install that has come back to us with intermittent motor trouble in the first year has traced back to undersized wiring or a shared circuit that starves the motor at start.
Wiring Runs, Disconnects, and Code
Electrical code requires a disconnect within sight of the powerpack. On most 2 post car lift installs we hang a small fused disconnect box on the wall next to the pump, hard-wire from the panel through conduit or MC cable, and land the pump on the disconnect. That satisfies inspection and lets you kill power at the lift without walking back to the main panel every time you service the powerpack.
Wire runs should be planned in advance because retrofitting conduit through finished ceilings and drywall is expensive. In an Iowa City body shop with a finished paint-booth wall we usually route through exposed ceiling, drop into a column-back conduit, and land the disconnect on the same column that houses the powerpack. This keeps the wiring visible for inspection and easy to service. We also ground the columns to the disconnect for stray-current protection. Column Footprint and Bay Layout for CV Work
A ten-thousand pound 2 post car lift has a column footprint of roughly twelve inches by fourteen inches at the base plate, and the columns typically sit twelve to thirteen feet apart. For CV work you want the columns positioned so the vehicle can be centered between them with the driveline axis parallel to the column axis. That way the front wheels hang directly over the front bay and you can walk in from either side without stepping over an arm.
Body shop bays are usually laid out for collision work with vehicles fore-and-aft, and a 2 post car lift slots into that geometry naturally. What often goes wrong is the toolbox and welding cart being too close to the column, which limits arm swing when you need to reach a rear pinch weld on a longer sedan. Plan for four feet of clear space beyond each column in the direction the arms swing. If your bay is tight, we can spec a symmetric-arm lift that swings more predictably and gives you tighter tolerances. Bay width should be at least twenty feet wall-to-wall for a comfortable install.
Arm Restraints, Pads, and Reaching the Pinch Weld
Every 2 post car lift arm has a restraint gear that locks the arm from swinging under load. On CV axle work, arm restraint matters because you may be applying lateral force with a slide hammer or a hub puller. The restraint keeps the arm from creeping and dropping a pad off the pinch weld while you are under the car. Check the restraint gear engagement on every lift cycle, and replace the gear if teeth are visibly rounded.
Pad placement on a modern FWD sedan is unforgiving. The factory pinch weld is often the only structural pickup point, and if you set a pad on a plastic rocker cover the vehicle is coming down at some point during the job. If you do not have the vehicle manufacturer’s lift-point diagram, look it up before you lift. A wrong pad on a modern unibody is one of the most common causes of lift-related collision damage, and it is one hundred percent preventable.
A Straightforward Buying Checklist for Iowa City Shops
