Twelve months ago a West Des Moines RV and trailer service shop we work with put their first 2 post car lift into the corner bay of a newly leased building. Why a Trailer Shop Went 2-Post Instead of 4-Post

The natural instinct at an RV shop is to buy a 4-post lift with a rolling jack, because everything from a Class C motorhome to a fifth-wheel tow rig is welcome to drive up and park. But this owner ran the math and saw that 80 percent of the actual wrench time was tow-vehicle brake work, wheel bearings, and suspension. The First Brake Job and What It Taught Them

That habit is one we drill into every crew: pause at elbow height, walk each pad, verify each restraint has clicked into its gear, then keep going. The Yukon came up smooth. Wheels came off in eight minutes.

What surprised the tech was how much faster brake service ran with a 2 post car lift versus the floor jack workflow they had used for years. No repositioning. No jack stands. No creeper crawling for the caliper bracket bolts. Total job time on that first rotor swap dropped from about 90 minutes to just under 40. Arm Restraints and Safety-Cam Engagement Explained

When the arms are pinned under a vehicle and the hoist starts to raise, the restraint locks the arm swing so the vehicle cannot walk sideways off the pads as it clears the floor. On modern Rotary and Challenger units, the restraint is a gear-and-pawl mechanism that engages automatically the moment the lift begins to climb. You can hear the pawl drop into the gear with a distinct click. If you do not hear that click, stop and re-seat the arm.

The safety cam is separate. That is the mechanical lock that catches the column at each notch (usually every four inches of travel) so that even if a hydraulic hose fails, the vehicle stops within a few inches of its held position. On this shop’s lift, the safety cam ratchet is audible on the way up and requires a small handle pull to release on the way down. Both systems are inspected daily by the lead tech: eyes-on pawl engagement before every raise, ears-on ratchet click on every ascent. Ten seconds. Zero cost. Prevented one incident that we know of when a mispositioned pad walked mid-lift.

Cable Stretch, Fluid Level, and the 90-Day Check

Every 2 post car lift equalizer cable stretches during the first month of duty as the pulleys seat and the cable strands compact. That is normal, expected, and specified by every manufacturer. What is not normal is ignoring it. On this shop’s lift, the tech checked cable tension weekly for the first six weeks, then at 90 days, then quarterly after that. The check is simple: raise the lift halfway, sight along the two columns with a level, and confirm that the carriages are within a quarter inch of each other. If they are off, one cable has stretched more than the other and needs an adjuster tweak.

Hydraulic fluid level is the other habit. AW-46 or ISO 32 is what most manufacturers spec, and the reservoir sight gauge on the power unit tells you where you stand at a glance. This shop tops off with the same brand the lift shipped with and logs the top-off in a maintenance notebook by the lift. At 90 days our crew went back for the scheduled anchor re-torque and cable adjustment. Total time on site was 45 minutes. Total cost: a service call fee and a coffee for the tech. That single visit is the difference between a lift that runs a decade and one that develops problems in year three.

What Broke and What Did Not

In twelve months of daily commercial duty, exactly one thing failed on this 2 post car lift: an arm-restraint gear popped a tooth after somebody yanked the arm past its stop while trying to swing it under a low-riding sedan. The gear was a warranty replacement, shipped in three days, installed by our tech in an hour. Nothing else failed. The hydraulic power unit ran without a leak. The cables did not fray. The safety cams engaged every single cycle. That is the honest track record.

What did wear was operator habit. The shop had to enforce a rule that arms get lowered fully before any tech walked between the columns, because two techs each independently barked a shin on a mid-height arm inside the first month. That is not a lift failure; that is a workflow lesson. The other habit change: they added a magnetic tray to the overhead beam so caliper bolts and clips did not get dropped on the concrete or lost in the toolbox. Small things. But small things are what turn a hoist into a real workstation over the course of a year of hard duty.

Was the Investment Worth It: Year-One Math

Let me give you the numbers the way the shop owner shared them with us. The 2 post car lift landed for a mid-four-figure price plus a mid-three-figure install. The insurance underwriter came back with a small annual premium reduction once the ALI certification was on file. Brake jobs that used to take 90 minutes now run 40. Wheel-bearing packs, previously an all-day fight with jack stands, run under two hours. Suspension work is booked because they can actually accept it now. Rough back-of-napkin: the lift paid for itself in about seven months of freed labor time.

Beyond the numbers, the shop stopped losing a couple of jobs a month to a competing shop across town that had lifts. Customers see a lift bay when they walk in and they treat the shop differently. The RV chassis work now stays in-house instead of getting subbed out. The shared circuit worked. It also tripped once during a routine raise when the shop compressor kicked on the same feed. That was a five-minute reset, but it was a moment where the vehicle sat mid-cycle waiting on power. Not dangerous. Just avoidable. Second install, we run the dedicated circuit before the crate opens.

We would also have poured a small trench for the hydraulic line to the second bay in advance, because the shop has already told us to spec a second lift by spring and they wish the concrete work was already done. Beyond that, the install and first-year run went right.
