Configuration A: 10K Asymmetric Overhead

The 10,000 pound asymmetric overhead is the classic daily-maintenance 2 post car lift. Columns rotate about thirty degrees so the vehicle sits back on the lift, doors have room to open between the columns, and the tech can walk around the front of the car without twisting sideways. Rotary’s SPOA10 and Challenger’s CL10 are the two models we install most often in this configuration for shops in Ames and the surrounding towns north to Story City and south to Nevada.

Capacity of 10K covers every passenger car, minivan, and half-ton pickup that rolls into an Ames shop on any given morning. It will not cover a 3/4-ton diesel loaded with fuel because those are 8,500 to 9,500 pounds curb, and by the time you are on the arms with tools, you are too close to the ceiling of the lift’s rating. If your customer base is 90 percent cars and half-tons, this configuration wins on ergonomics and price. Overall height sits around 11 feet 5 inches, so you need an honest 12-foot ceiling.

Configuration B: 12K Symmetric Baseplate

The 12,000 pound symmetric baseplate 2 post car lift is what we quote when a shop has a lower ceiling or a heavier vehicle mix. The columns face each other straight-across, the crossbar runs on the floor between them, and overall column height drops to about 9 feet 8 inches on most Rotary and Challenger 12K models. That opens up bays in older Ames buildings, anything built before 1990 that was originally a warehouse or a machine shop with a truss chord you cannot move.

Symmetric columns do not rotate the vehicle back, so door swing is tighter and techs learn to enter and exit with the door only partway open. In exchange, you get real capacity margin on 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups, plus a wider drive-through for dually rear axles. If your shop does any diesel work, or if you sit in a low-ceilinged bay, the 12K baseplate is the honest recommendation for a long-term lift purchase.

Bay Height Decides Half the Question

The single spec that eliminates one of these configurations before any other conversation is your bay height. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest point in the ceiling, often a truss chord or an HVAC duct, and subtract three inches of clearance. If the number is 11 feet 8 inches or better, either configuration installs cleanly. If you are at 10 feet 6 inches, the 10K overhead is out and the 12K baseplate is your path forward without any compromise on capacity.

We’ve walked more Ames shops than we can count where the owner assumed the ceiling was 12 feet because the eave measurements said so, only to find a low duct dropping to 10 feet at the exact spot the lift needed to sit. Vehicle Mix Decides the Other Half

The second question that decides between these two 2 post car lift configurations is your vehicle mix. Pull last quarter’s tickets and count how many of your top-twenty invoices were on vehicles over 6,500 pounds curb weight. If it is fewer than three of twenty, the 10K asymmetric is enough. If it is five or more, the extra 2,000 pounds of capacity from the 12K is worth the money and the door-swing trade-off you will feel every morning.

Ames sits at an interesting mix point. There are more 3/4-ton diesels here than in a Des Moines suburb because farms and small contractors keep their trucks in city shops. But there are also a lot of Corollas and Foresters from the university crowd. If your shop leans academic, go 10K. If your shop leans agricultural, go 12K. If you are genuinely mixed, we usually push toward the 12K because you can lift smaller vehicles on a bigger lift, but you cannot lift heavier vehicles on a smaller one.

Financing Terms and Payment Schedule

Both configurations of the 2 post car lift qualify for our 0% APR financing through First Business, which is our lease-alternative partner. Terms are 12 months of equal payments with a 90-day payment deferral from the delivery date. That means you install in September, start payments in December, and pay off in November of the following year with zero interest charged along the way. The math is straightforward: quoted price divided by twelve, first payment ninety days out from your install date.

Extended terms of 36 to 60 months are available at 6 to 9 percent depending on credit and equipment. We do not publish those rates online because they change monthly with the underwriting desk, but we quote them the same day you ask. For most independent shops, the 12-month 0% path is the right one because the payment is roughly the profit from a busy Saturday, and once it is paid off, the lift keeps earning for another fifteen years without any further finance cost.

Install and Break-In Comparison

Install time for either 2 post car lift configuration is one day for a two-tech crew on a bare, code-thickness slab with power already run to the column location. Anchor pattern for both configurations is four 3/4-inch wedge anchors per column, torqued to spec. The baseplate model adds about an hour to run the crossbar and pressure-test it, but it also skips the overhead cable-routing step, so the two roughly cancel out over the course of the install day.

Break-in is the same either way: fifteen to twenty empty cycles first, watching cable tracking and hydraulic weep, then fifteen to twenty cycles loaded to about half rating, then the lift is ready for a full-weight vehicle. We walk shop owners through break-in on site during install and leave a laminated card on the column with the two-week and 90-day inspection intervals clearly marked. That card is what keeps warranties honored when a question comes up in year two.

Which One We Quote Most in Ames

For a pure daily-maintenance independent pro shop in Ames with a 12-foot ceiling and a mixed vehicle roster, we quote the 10K asymmetric overhead about 60 percent of the time. The other 40 percent goes to the 12K symmetric baseplate when the ceiling is short, when the diesel count is higher, or when the shop plans to add heavier work in the next three years.
