A 2 post car lift only stays safe as long as its equalizer cables are doing their job, and we learned that lesson again on a recent multi-bay job straddling the Iowa-Missouri border. A mobile mechanic running daily maintenance work out of a shared shop called us in after noticing one arm dropping slightly faster than the other on a routine oil change. What we found wasn’t one bad cable. It was a whole row of lifts that had gone years without anyone actually looking up at the sheaves. That visit turned into a case study we still reference when we talk to shops about cable inspection intervals.

What We Found on This Job

The shop had six bays total, and the story was almost identical across four of them: LE10-style 2 post lifts that had been running daily maintenance work for years with equalizer cables that were original to the install. When we walked the bay, we could see fraying at the pulley contact points and enough stretch that the carriages weren’t locking evenly. On one bay the cables needed replacement immediately, no question, before another vehicle went up. On two others we tagged them as needing cables soon but usable for light work in the short term.

This is common on lifts doing high volume oil changes, tire rotations, and quick inspections. A 2 post car lift used for daily maintenance cycles up and down far more times per day than one used for occasional heavier repair work, and every cycle puts wear on the cable and the sheave it rides over. We also found a couple of bays needing new hydraulic cylinders and rod work, which is a separate issue, but the cable problem was the one that had to be fixed first because it’s the one that affects whether the lift holds a vehicle safely at height.

Why Cables Wear Faster Than People Expect

Equalizer cables on a 2 post car lift keep both carriages moving together as the lift rises. Every time that cable runs over a sheave, it flexes, and repeated flexing under load is what eventually causes broken strands, flat spots, and stretch. A shop doing ten to fifteen lift cycles a day is putting a lot more flex cycles on that cable in a year than a shop that lifts a car twice a day for major repairs. That’s why daily maintenance shops, quick lubes, and tire shops tend to need cable replacement on a shorter interval than a body shop running the same brand of lift.

We also see cable wear accelerated by things that have nothing to do with lift cycles. Dirt and grit in the sheave grooves acts like sandpaper on the cable every time it moves. A lift installed near a gravel lot or a salt-heavy Iowa winter parking area picks up more of that grit than one in a clean indoor bay. None of this means the lift is bad equipment. It means the maintenance interval has to match how the lift is actually used, not just a generic manufacturer number pulled from a manual nobody read.

Setting a Realistic Inspection Interval

For a 2 post car lift running daily maintenance work, we tell shops to do a quick visual check of both cables every week and a hands-on inspection at least quarterly. The visual check takes under a minute: look at the cable where it wraps the sheave, look for fraying, kinks, or any spot where strands look separated. The quarterly check involves running the lift up empty and watching whether both carriages rise evenly, then feeling along the cable length for flat spots or stiff sections that don’t move freely.

If a shop is running the lift ten or more times a day, we push that quarterly check to closer to every eight to ten weeks. We’d rather a shop replace cables a little early than have a carriage drop unevenly with a vehicle at height. On the multi-bay job that started this whole conversation, once we got the worst bays fixed, we set the shop up on a rotating check schedule so every bay gets looked at on a set date instead of only when someone notices a problem. That’s the difference between reactive repair calls and planned maintenance, and it’s a lot cheaper in the long run.

Signs the Cables Need Replacing Now

There are a few signs that mean don’t wait for the next scheduled check. If one side of the 2 post car lift visibly rises or lowers faster than the other, stop using it. If you hear a popping or grinding sound as the lift travels, that’s often a strand catching on the sheave. If you can see daylight through the cable where strands have separated, that cable is done. On the border-area job we’re describing, several bays were showing the uneven-rise symptom, which is exactly why we flagged them as needing cables immediately rather than on the following week’s schedule.

We also tell shops to watch the locking mechanism at the same time they check cables, because a cable problem often shows up alongside a lock ladder or pawl issue. On this job, one bay needed both new equalizer cables and new front lock ladders, and those two problems were related to the same years of daily cycling without inspection. Catching both at once meant one repair trip instead of two separate emergency calls a few weeks apart.

Why Mobile and Multi-Bay Shops See This Pattern Most

Mobile mechanics and shops that run several lifts side by side tend to run into cable wear patterns like this more than single-bay independent garages, simply because volume is higher and it’s easier for one bay’s cable condition to get lost in the shuffle when there are six or eight lifts to keep track of.
