A 9,000 lb lift built for daily oil changes and brake jobs typically pulls less than a 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb unit built for heavier trucks or continuous shop use. We’ve seen restoration shops try to run a new lift off an existing circuit shared with a compressor or welder, and it trips constantly under load — which looks like a lift problem but is actually a wiring problem.

Our advice: run a dedicated circuit sized specifically to the manufacturer’s spec sheet for the exact model you’re buying, not a generic guess. A 2 post car lift needs a certain slab thickness — commonly 4 to 6 inches of solid, unreinforced concrete depending on the model and capacity — to anchor safely. If your restoration shop is in an older building with thinner or cracked concrete, that’s a conversation to have before the electrician runs conduit, because moving the lift’s final position after the fact means moving the power drop too.
