A European-marque specialty shop outside Sioux City called us last spring because their brand-new 2 post car lift had been sitting shrink-wrapped on a pallet for six weeks. Nobody had measured the ceiling at the low point of the truss, nobody had checked the slab thickness where the columns would actually land, and the electrician had run a 120V circuit to a 208V three-phase power unit. None of that was the equipment’s fault. Every one of those problems was a site-prep problem, and every one of them was avoidable with an afternoon of measuring and a phone call. We’ve installed and serviced lifts across Iowa, Nebraska, and the Dakotas for years, and the same handful of myths cause the same delays over and over. Here’s what actually matters.

Myth #1: “Four inches of concrete is four inches of concrete”

This is the single most common assumption we hear, and it’s wrong more often than it’s right. A slab spec sheet from 1978 tells you what the contractor was paid to pour, not what’s under your feet today. We’ve drilled test holes in shops where the slab measured a genuine five inches near the overhead door and barely three and a quarter at the back wall where the grade dropped and the pour thinned out. That’s exactly where somebody wanted to put a column. Concrete thickness matters, but so does compressive strength and the age of the pour. Most two-post manufacturers want a minimum of 3,000 PSI and four inches of solid, reinforced concrete with no cracks, control joints, or expansion seams within a specified distance of the anchor pattern.

The practical move is simple: core or hammer-drill a test hole at each intended column location before you buy. It takes twenty minutes and a masonry bit. If you come up short, you’re not out of options — a saw-cut and repour of two footing pads is far cheaper than replacing an entire slab, and we’ve coordinated that work on plenty of jobs. What you don’t want is the installer discovering the problem on delivery day with a truck in your lot and a driver on the clock. Verify the slab first, then order the equipment. That order matters more than most people realize.

Myth #2: “My ceiling is twelve feet, so I’m fine”

Ceiling height is measured at the lowest obstruction over the lift footprint, not at the peak. In pole buildings and older commercial garages we regularly find sprinkler heads, gas lines, unit heaters, radiant tube heat, conduit runs, and truss webbing hanging well below the stated ceiling. On a clear-floor overhead model, the crossbeam and the shutoff bar need real clearance above the raised vehicle, which is why manufacturers publish an overall height figure that’s often two feet taller than you’d guess. One shop we quoted in northwest Iowa had a nominal fourteen-foot ceiling and a run of six-inch exhaust ducting at ten feet three inches directly over the drive-through path.

That’s not a dead end. It’s the reason baseplate models exist. A baseplate two-post routes the equalization cables and hoses through a floor plate between the columns instead of an overhead beam, so your only real height limit is the vehicle plus the lift’s rise. The tradeoff is a low ramp at the floor you have to drive over, which most shops stop noticing within a week. For a European-marque shop doing daily maintenance on sedans and wagons, the drive-over plate is a non-issue. Measure to the lowest thing hanging down, write the number on a piece of masking tape on the wall, and send us that number. We’ll tell you which configuration works instead of guessing.

Myth #3: A 2 post car lift is a 2 post car lift

Symmetric versus asymmetric is the distinction that costs shops the most money after the fact. A symmetric setup puts the columns directly across from each other and splits the vehicle roughly 50/50, with all four arms the same length. An asymmetric layout rotates the columns and uses shorter front arms and longer rear arms so the vehicle sits back further and the doors clear the posts. If you work on cars every day and open driver doors twenty times a shift, asymmetric changes your working life. If you’re lifting long-wheelbase vans and pickups, symmetric handles the weight distribution better.

Capacity is the other place people guess. Ten thousand pounds covers virtually all passenger cars, crossovers, and half-ton trucks with margin. But capacity ratings assume the load is distributed properly across the pads and centered near the columns — a 9,000 lb dually with the engine mass forward of the front arms can overload one column while the total weight looks fine on paper. For a specialty shop, the honest answer is usually a 10,000 lb unit with a good arm package and the right lift pad adapters for the marque you service. Air-Vantage-style stack adapters and truck pads matter more than an extra 2,000 lb of nameplate capacity you’ll never use. Power, air, and the electrician conversation

Power units come in single-phase 208-230V, three-phase, and occasionally 115V configurations, and they are not interchangeable after the fact without swapping the motor. Before you order, find out what’s actually available at your panel and how much spare capacity you have. A shop that already runs a three-phase compressor usually has the easy path. A converted farm building with a 100-amp panel and a welder on it does not. We ask about this on every quote because a dedicated circuit run by a licensed electrician is a line item people forget to budget, and it’s the one thing that can’t be improvised on install day.

Most two-post units also need shop air for the safety-lock release, typically 30 to 40 PSI at the column. If your compressor is on the other side of the building, plan a drop before the installer arrives rather than running a hose across the floor for the next decade. Locate the power unit on the side that makes sense for your workflow — it’s usually swappable left to right at install, but only if you decide before the columns are anchored. Think about where the hose and cable runs go, where your air line lands, and whether the power unit door will hit the wall. These are five-minute decisions that you live with for fifteen years.

Bay layout: leave room to actually work

Manufacturer footprint dimensions tell you where the columns go. They don’t tell you whether you can get a transmission jack around the back or roll a tire cart between bays. We recommend a minimum of three feet of clear walking space outside each column, more if you’re pulling subframes or dropping exhausts. A shop we set up in a converted implement building had the footprint right on paper but had put a workbench eighteen inches behind the driver-side column, which meant the tech had to walk around the front of the car every single time to reach the release. That’s a hundred wasted steps a day.

Drive-through width matters too. If you’re loading from one door and unloading out the back, the column spacing has to accommodate your widest vehicle plus mirror clearance, and many two-post models offer an expandable or adjustable top beam for exactly that reason. Also think about the door itself: a sixteen-foot overhead door with a low header can limit how tall a vehicle you can bring in, regardless of how high the lift goes. And leave space for the lift’s own installation — the columns arrive on a pallet and need a forklift or a lift-gate plus a pallet jack and a clear path to their final position. What a real site survey looks like

When we do a survey — in person or over the phone with photos — we’re collecting about a dozen numbers. Slab thickness at each column location. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction. Distance from the intended column centerline to the nearest wall, control joint, floor drain, and pit. Available voltage and phase. Panel capacity. Compressor location and output. Overhead door width and header height. Widest and heaviest vehicle you service. Whether you’ve got a forklift, a skid loader, or nothing. Where the truck can back in. That’s it. Ten minutes of measuring saves weeks of delay on a 2 post car lift installation.

What we don’t do is take a customer’s word for the slab. Nobody’s lying — people genuinely don’t know, because the person who poured it is long gone and the drawings are wrong. So we ask for a photo of a drilled hole with a tape measure in it. Same with ceiling height: a photo of the tape stretched to the lowest pipe beats a verbal estimate every time. We just want the numbers right before the freight leaves the dock, because a 2 post car lift that doesn’t fit is the most expensive mistake in this business.
