A mobile mechanic who runs his route out of a rented pole-barn bay in southern Minnesota reached out to us last fall. He was tired of jack-stand work in every driveway he visited and wanted a fixed base of operations for the messy jobs: transmission drops, exhaust work, brake calipers, and the daily maintenance that eats a mobile guy’s time. He wanted a 2 post car lift that would handle everything from a Ford Focus up to his own three-quarter-ton service truck. Ceiling height was the constraint. His pole barn measured twelve feet nine inches to the truss chord. That number is right on the knife-edge between overhead and baseplate. Here is how we walked him through the decision.

Why the Ceiling Number Actually Matters
People ask us for a magic ceiling number, and the honest answer is there is not one. A 10,000 lb overhead 2 post car lift needs about eleven feet six inches of true clear space to lift a passenger car to full height with the overhead bar deployed. A 12,000 lb model wants closer to twelve feet six inches. If your ceiling is exactly twelve feet nine, you can technically fit the smaller overhead, but you will hit the shutoff bar every time you try to raise a taller SUV. That was our southern Minnesota customer’s situation. He wanted room for his own Silverado plus room to work on lifted trucks that customers dropped off.
We measured his bay in person on a Thursday afternoon and found something the tape measure had missed: two sagging LED strip fixtures dropping to twelve feet four in the middle of the bay. If we had shipped an overhead 2 post car lift based on the twelve-nine number the customer gave us, the shutoff bar would have kissed those fixtures every raise. The real usable clearance was about eight inches less than advertised. This is the reason we ask for photos of the bay from four corners before we quote anything.
The Baseplate Compromise We Ended Up Recommending
Given the actual clearance, we recommended a baseplate 2 post car lift. Baseplate routes the hydraulic hose and equalizer cables through a low crossover across the floor instead of an overhead bar. You lose about half an inch of drive-through width, and you have to be disciplined about cable-cover routing so nobody trips, but you gain full overhead access no matter what the ceiling looks like. For a mobile mechanic who occasionally works on lifted trucks and eight-foot van roofs, that was worth the compromise.
We spec’d a Rotary 10,000 lb symmetric baseplate. Symmetric because he mostly works on standard-wheelbase passenger cars and half-ton pickups; the columns face straight forward, and the arms are equal length front and rear. Ten thousand pounds because his three-quarter-ton service truck is right at the eight-thousand-pound mark loaded, giving him a comfortable margin. We could have gone twelve thousand pounds, but on this bay the extra height and column footprint would have cost him three feet of walking room around each column. On a small solo-operator bay, floor space is often the binding constraint, not capacity.
The Iowa Install: What We Actually Did
Because he lives an hour north of the Iowa border, we drove the install truck up. Install started at 7:30 a.m. with a core drill in each planned column footprint. His slab came back at 4.25 inches with clean aggregate: good enough. We laid out the columns using a factory jig, drilled the anchor holes with a hammer drill and dust extractor, set the wedge anchors, and torqued to spec. That took about ninety minutes with two techs. Setting the columns, plumbing the hydraulics, running the crossover, and dressing the safety cables took another three and a half hours. First full raise was at 1:15 p.m., and we ran two full test cycles with a two-thousand-pound test weight before handing him the keys.
Two things we always do on install day that some competitors skip: full torque check on every anchor before final commissioning, and a printed one-page cheat sheet for the owner covering daily walk-around, weekly cable check, and quarterly hydraulic fluid look. Our mobile mechanic pinned that cheat sheet to the wall next to the 2 post car lift and told us he actually uses it. That is not a given. Most owners lose the printed manual in six months. A single laminated page above the control post is the thing that gets read.
Daily Maintenance Workflow: What Changed
Six months in, his workflow has shifted almost completely. What used to be a two-hour brake job in a customer’s driveway with jack stands and a work light is now a forty-five-minute job in his barn: pull in, raise on the 2 post car lift, work at chest height with proper lighting, drop, out. He is charging the same per-job rate and doing more jobs per day, which is the whole business case for a fixed base of operations. He still does mobile work three days a week; he stopped doing brake and driveline work at the customer’s location entirely.
The daily maintenance workflow he uses on the lift itself is simple. Walk-around before first use: eyeball the cables at each sheave for broken strands, check the arm-locking gates for full engagement, listen for any air in the hydraulic circuit on the first raise. Weekly: check the equalizer cable tension with a straight-edge across the arms at 48 inches of lift; both sides should match within a quarter inch. Quarterly: hydraulic fluid level and clarity, plus a full torque check on the anchor bolts. That is the whole regime. Fifteen minutes a week keeps a 2 post car lift running for two decades.
The Overhead Option We Rejected and Why
For the record, we did quote him an overhead model as well. It was a 10,000 lb Challenger with equal-length arms and a full-frame overhead safety bar. About four hundred dollars cheaper than the baseplate we ended up shipping. On paper, a better deal. In his actual bay, a non-starter, because the sagging light fixtures ate the clearance. He asked us to price relocating the fixtures. We priced it: about six hundred dollars in electrical work plus the risk of pulling permits that would trigger a full inspection of a barn wired thirty years ago. He decided the extra four hundred for the baseplate was cheap insurance against the electrical rabbit hole.
That decision-making pattern shows up a lot in mobile-mechanic and small-shop installs. The technically cheaper 2 post car lift is often not the cheaper install once you factor in what the building has to give up to accommodate it. We would rather cost you four hundred dollars more on the hardware and save you a permit process than push the lower-hardware quote and stick you with a surprise. If a shop is quoting you overhead without asking about your fixtures and door pockets, get a second quote.
What This Setup Cost, in Ranges
Lift hardware landed in the mid four-thousand-dollar range for the baseplate model itself. Freight to his zip code with a lift-gate truck ran a few hundred more. Install with our two-tech team including the anchor coring, wedge sets, and commissioning came in around a thousand. Total delivered and running was in the low six-thousand-dollar zone. For a mobile mechanic replacing a job-per-driveway workflow with a fixed-bay workflow, that pays back in a couple of quarters if you are billing at a reasonable rate.
