A 2 post car lift going into a dealership service department in Davenport has to answer more geometry questions than the same lift in a hobby garage. The vehicles are taller, the doors are wider, the bay is deeper, and the mix ranges from lowered performance cars to lifted trucks that a restoration department is doing metal work on. We recently spec’d a full four-column upgrade for a Davenport dealership expanding into full restoration and body work, and the ceiling and door geometry conversation dominated the first meeting. Here are the actual dimensions we worked with and the reasoning that led to the final column selection.

The bay dimensions we started with

The Davenport dealership had four adjacent service bays, each 30 feet deep by 22 feet wide, with 14-foot 6-inch ceilings and 12-foot roll-up doors on the front. That is a comfortable envelope for any current commercial 2 post car lift, but 14 feet 6 inches is not the same as 16 feet, and the manager needed to know which columns would still leave overhead clearance for a raised SUV. We measured actual clear height under the ceiling trusses at 14 feet 2 inches at the lowest point, which is the number that mattered.

Rotary and Challenger both publish minimum ceiling requirements around 12 to 13 feet for standard-height overhead columns. Extended-height variants push that number to 14 or 15 feet. In the Davenport bays, we could run standard-height columns without any conflict, which kept the install straightforward. If the trusses had been at 13 feet 8 inches, the conversation would have gone differently, and that is exactly the kind of check that separates a clean install from a surprise on delivery day.

Door swing and column setback

A 12-foot roll-up door swings up on tracks that intrude into the bay interior. Track intrusion typically extends 24 to 36 inches back from the door line at the ceiling. If a 2 post car lift is set too close to the door, the column tops can conflict with the door track when the door is open. We measure the track intrusion at each bay, and we set the columns at least four feet back from the door line to leave room.

In the Davenport dealership, we set the columns six feet back from the door on each of the four bays. That gave clean door operation with a vehicle at full working height, which matters for a service department that opens and closes doors constantly through a shift. Every 2 post car lift in that dealership can lift a vehicle to full height without a tech watching the door track, which was an explicit ask from the service manager.

Column height and cable geometry

Standard commercial 2 post car lift columns are around 145 to 150 inches tall. The equalizer bar at the top adds another 6 to 12 inches depending on model. In a 14-foot 2-inch clear ceiling, that puts the top of the equalizer bar at roughly 12 feet 6 inches, leaving about 20 inches of headroom. That is enough for HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, and lighting, but it is not a lot of margin. We routed the dealership’s new work lights on drop pendants that hang below the equalizer, which kept the ceiling clean.

The alternative is a baseplate 2 post car lift, which moves the equalizer cables to a floor channel between the two columns. Baseplate is the right call for tighter ceilings, but in a dealership service department where techs move quickly across bays, the floor channel becomes a trip point. Overhead was the better choice here. The ceiling had the room, and the floor stayed clean.

Vehicle mix and arm geometry

A dealership service department doing restoration and metal work sees the full vehicle catalog. A given week might include a lowered coupe, a factory sedan, a 3/4-ton truck, and a lifted SUV. The 2 post car lift arms have to reach all of them without swap-in adapters slowing down the tech. That pushed us toward asymmetric columns with the low-pro arm kit as the default and a taller adapter set on the shelf for the lifted trucks.

Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger CL10V3 both fit that spec. We recommended matching all four bays with the same model so techs could move between bays without adjusting muscle memory. Consistency across bays is a productivity feature that most service managers underestimate. Every 2 post car lift in the dealership operates identically now, which is exactly what the service manager wanted.

Restoration and metal work: what changes

Restoration and metal work on a vehicle at height stresses a 2 post car lift differently than routine maintenance. Techs are applying lateral forces during panel work, sometimes using porta-power tools, sometimes bracing sheet metal against fixtures. The arms and restraints see side loads that a brake job never generates. That is a reason to spec a column with gear-driven arm restraints and fine safety cam spacing.

We also spec longer front arm reach for restoration work, because the tech often needs to hit an unusual pinch weld on a body-off frame or an oddly proportioned older car. The extra reach came standard on the SPOA10 asymmetric arms we installed. That flexibility is worth more in a restoration bay than it is in a routine service bay, and it was a specific ask from the dealership. Every 2 post car lift in a restoration line should be spec’d with unusual jobs in mind, because a restoration department sees them weekly.

Electrical service and phase

The Davenport dealership had 208 volt three-phase service already in place, which is the ideal supply for a commercial 2 post car lift power unit. Each column got its own dedicated circuit sized to the motor’s full-load amps with a 25 percent margin, plus a lockable disconnect within sight of the lift for OSHA compliance. Total electrical labor for the four-lift install came in at under five thousand dollars because the panel had spare capacity and the runs were short.

If the building had been single-phase, we would have quoted a rotary phase converter or a utility upgrade, either of which would have added five figures to the project. Dealerships that are planning restoration or heavy service expansions should have that conversation with an electrician before they call us. It saves a full round of quote revisions.

The finished install and what we would repeat

The four 2 post car lift installs at the Davenport dealership finished on schedule with all bays operating within a week. The service manager now has consistent equipment across the department, restoration techs are getting the arm reach and cam spacing they need, and the doors and ceiling both stay clear of the columns at full working height. Every geometry decision we made in the first meeting held up in operation.

The takeaway for any dealership planning a service department upgrade is this: measure everything before you buy anything. Ceiling height, truss position, door track intrusion, slab thickness, panel capacity, and vehicle mix all determine which the lift makes sense.
