Why Transmission Bays Need a Different 2 Post Car Lift Survey
A transmission service bay isn’t just another lube rack. Techs need full swing clearance to work a transmission jack under the vehicle, room to roll a torque converter cart in and out, and enough vertical travel to get a full-size pickup or a lifted service loaner up to a comfortable working height. That changes the math on a 2 post car lift compared to a standard alignment or tire bay. We measure not just ceiling height to the lowest obstruction – sprinkler heads, HVAC ductwork, light fixtures – but also the swing radius of the arms fully extended, because a transmission jack rolling in from the side needs that arm clear.
We also ask what vehicles the bay actually services day to day. A dealership running mostly trucks and SUVs needs a higher lift capacity and taller columns than a shop doing mostly sedans. We ask about the panel location relative to the bay too, since a long run means either more conduit or a different power feed altogether.
We also plan hydraulic line routing during the survey, especially where a lift will sit near a floor drain, existing conduit, or another lift’s power/hydraulic run. In shared bays, we try to keep new equipment’s lines out of the walking path and away from where a transmission jack or cart will be rolling daily. None of this is complicated, but it’s easy to miss if the survey only looks at floor space and skips what’s overhead, underground, and on the wall.
Forklift and Delivery Access
Getting a 2 post car lift into the building is its own logistics problem, and it’s one we ask about on every quote call. Columns on a commercial-capacity lift are heavy, and without a forklift on site, unloading and moving them into position takes a lot longer and sometimes requires renting equipment. Once the survey confirms ceiling height, slab condition, column spacing, power, and delivery access, we schedule an install date and let the dealership know exactly what to expect.
