Voltage and Phase: What Dealership Bays Actually Run

Most dealership service departments we’ve quoted in southwest Iowa run three-phase power somewhere on the property, but that doesn’t mean every bay has it pulled to the column location. A typical 2 post car lift in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb class — think a Challenger CL10V3 or a Rotary SPO10 — ships with a motor that can be wired for either single-phase or three-phase, but the two draw very differently. Single-phase 230V motors on a two post car lift pull more amperage on startup, which matters if you’ve got multiple lifts on the same panel and they’re firing hydraulic pumps back to back during a busy transmission day.

We’ve had dealership service managers assume that because the shop has three-phase in the parts department or the paint booth, it’s automatically available at the lift bay. It isn’t always. Before we ever quote a 2 post car lift, we ask what’s actually run to that specific column location, not just what’s somewhere in the building. If it’s not there, that’s a conversation with an electrician before the lift arrives, not after.

Circuit Sizing for a 2 Post Car Lift Doing Heavy Transmission Work

A transmission bay doesn’t just lift a vehicle and hold it — the hydraulic pump cycles more often because techs are raising and lowering to access crossmembers, driveshafts, and transfer cases at different heights throughout the job. That means the motor circuit on your two post car lift needs to handle repeated cycling without nuisance tripping. For a 10K-12K unit, we typically see dedicated 20-amp to 30-amp circuits depending on motor horsepower, and we always tell dealerships to run a dedicated circuit rather than sharing it with air compressors or other shop equipment.

Undersized wire gauge over a long run is the other failure point we catch constantly. If the electrical panel is 80 or 100 feet from the lift column, voltage drop on an undersized conductor will show up as a sluggish lift, especially under load with a transmission-heavy vehicle sitting on the arms. We give southwest Iowa dealerships the motor’s actual nameplate specs off the quote before they call their electrician, because guessing at wire gauge on a 12,000 lb two post car lift installation is how you end up re-trenching a slab six months later.

A Real Southwest Iowa Dealership Scenario

We’ve worked with dealership service managers testing floor spots before committing to a two-post installation — drilling test holes to confirm slab depth and rebar placement before signing off on final anchor locations. That same diligence needs to extend to the electrical rough-in. On one project we quoted, the service manager wanted floor spots tested in three different bay locations before finalizing where the lift would sit, precisely because moving a 2 post car lift after the concrete work and conduit are in means re-running everything.

For a transmission-focused bay, we recommend deciding on lift placement early enough that the electrician, the concrete contractor, and the lift installer are all working off the same final layout. Runway Width, Column Spacing, and Real Dimensions

Dimensions matter as much as amperage when you’re speccing a 2 post car lift for transmission work. Most 10K-12K asymmetric two post lifts run a rise height in the 68 to 76 inch range and require overhead clearance of roughly 12 feet minimum once you account for the arms fully extended. For dealership bays with 12 to 16 foot ceilings, that’s usually workable, but we’ve seen bays with HVAC ductwork or sprinkler lines low enough to force a shorter-rise model instead.

Column spacing on a two post car lift is typically adjustable within a range, but the padeye and cable routing for the equalization system runs directly under the slab area where conduit for the electrical circuit often needs to go too. That’s another reason we push for the electrician and lift installer to coordinate — conduit trenched in the wrong path can conflict with anchor bolt patterns on a 2 post car lift base plate, and nobody wants to discover that after the concrete cures.

Overhead vs. Floor-Level Disconnects

Dealership service departments in Iowa almost always want a disconnect switch mounted near the lift, not buried in a panel across the shop. For a two post car lift running constant transmission cycles, a local disconnect lets techs kill power fast if something feels off mid-lift, without hunting down a breaker box. We spec this as standard on dealership installs because it’s both a safety practice and something most state inspectors expect to see during a commercial lift inspection.

Where that disconnect gets mounted also depends on the circuit run. If conduit comes up through the floor near the column, a floor-level disconnect box makes sense. If it drops from overhead, wall-mounted near the bay entrance is more practical. Either way, this decision needs to happen during the same planning conversation as circuit sizing — not bolted on as an afterthought once the 2 post car lift is already anchored and wired hot.

Working With Your Electrician Before We Show Up

Once a 2 post car lift is running daily transmission cycles, the electrical components that see the most wear are the contactor in the motor starter and the pump motor’s start capacitor on single-phase setups. We’ve handled warranty calls where a lift’s lock mechanism wasn’t releasing properly, and while that’s usually mechanical, an underpowered circuit causing the motor to lag can contribute to locks not fully cycling at the bottom of a stroke.

For dealership service managers, we recommend having whoever does your PM checks look at the disconnect, the motor connections, and the contactor contacts on a regular schedule — not just the hydraulic side. A two post car lift that’s electrically sound runs quieter, cycles faster, and holds up better under the repeated up-and-down of daily transmission work than one running on a marginal circuit that’s just barely getting by.
