Most manufacturer warranties on a 2 post car lift break into two buckets: structural components (columns, carriages, arms) and wear items (hydraulic cylinders, hoses, cables, locks). Structural coverage typically runs longer, often five to ten years, because those parts don’t see daily friction. The cylinder, hose, and lock mechanism bucket is usually one to two years, and that’s the bucket that generates almost every claim we process. We’ve rebuilt cylinders on lifts barely out of that window because a fitting at the base of the cylinder was never snugged during install, and seepage that looks minor in month three turns into a real leak by month fourteen.

The distinction matters for a service manager because you need to know which bucket you’re filing under before you call it in. A structural claim on a 2 post car lift needs photos of the actual component, the serial tag, and a description of load conditions. A cylinder or hose claim needs those same photos plus documentation of fluid type and whether the seep was reported earlier. If a lift was installed outside those spec tolerances, or on a slab that wasn’t rated for the point loading, a manufacturer can and sometimes will push back on a structural claim, arguing the failure traces to installation rather than the equipment itself.

This is why we always pull the spec sheet for the exact model, whether it’s a Challenger CL10 or a Rotary column-style lift, before we anchor anything. We’ve had dealers ask us to install a lift in a bay that technically fits the columns but leaves the carriages fouling on a support beam once the vehicle is up at full rise. Getting those clearances right up front is the difference between a warranty claim that gets approved without argument and one that gets kicked back for an installer’s report. Common Failure Points We See in Dealership Use

Dealership 2 post car lift usage is harder on equipment than a lot of independent shops realize, mainly because of cycle count. That cycle volume is exactly why hydraulic cylinders and locking mechanisms wear faster in dealership service bays, and why we see more legitimate wear-item claims from dealers than from smaller independents.

The most common failure we get called for is a cylinder that seeps at the base fitting, which sometimes just needs the fitting tightened rather than a full rebuild, and sometimes needs a complete reseal kit. Second most common is a lock release cable that stretches or frays from repeat use, which is a simple wear-item swap under most warranty terms if caught early. We also see carriage rollers wearing unevenly on lifts where one side gets loaded more consistently, which happens naturally in an alignment bay where the tech tends to approach from the same side. None of these are unusual failures for a 2 post car lift under commercial cycle counts, but each one needs to be caught and documented before it becomes a bigger structural issue that’s harder to warranty.

Filing the Claim: Our Workflow With Manufacturers

When a dealership calls us about a warranty issue on a 2 post car lift, we don’t just show up and swap a part. We stop, inspect, photograph, and quote before touching anything, because that quote-first step is what the manufacturer wants to see documented if the claim gets questioned later. Keep your install folder, know your serial number, and train your techs to report seepage or unusual noise immediately rather than waiting until a lift is visibly failing. A slow cylinder seep reported in week one is a simple fitting adjustment; the same seep ignored for six months can turn into a full rebuild or, worse, a structural claim dispute over whether the damage progressed due to neglect.

We also recommend dealerships schedule an annual inspection separate from routine maintenance, specifically to check cylinder fittings, lock cables, and carriage rollers on any 2 post car lift running high daily cycles. That inspection creates its own paper trail, which strengthens any future warranty claim by showing the equipment was maintained on schedule. It’s a small cost against the alternative of a denied claim on a lift that’s central to your alignment business.
