We got a good look at that with an RV and trailer service shop outside Iowa City that came to us wanting one thing: a clean, repeatable way to do differential fluid service on tow vehicles, dually pickups and the occasional Class C chassis without crawling around on a creeper with a drain pan balanced on their chest. They had a building with a mezzanine over one bay, a garage door taller than most, and a lot of opinions about overhead versus baseplate. Here is how that decision went, what the install revealed, and what the first twelve months of service taught all of us.

Why a Two-Post Made More Sense Than a Four-Post Here
The shop’s first instinct was a four-post, because they associate four-posts with heavy stuff and they tow heavy stuff. But their actual work list told a different story. Differential service, transmission pans, exhaust hangers, brake lines, U-joints and driveshaft carrier bearings all want the wheels hanging free and the underside completely open. A drive-on runway is great for alignment and storage and terrible when you need to swing a socket around a diff cover with a runway six inches from your knuckles. Once we walked through the jobs they actually bill for, the two-post won on access alone.
Capacity was the second conversation. Their heaviest regular vehicle is a three-quarter-ton diesel with a service body, call it 9,000 pounds wet. A 10,000 lb two-post technically covers that, but two-post capacity assumes reasonably even load distribution, and a truck with a loaded utility bed does not distribute evenly. We pushed them to a 12,000 lb column set with three-stage front arms. The extra headroom in capacity cost less than the difference between two brands and it removed the temptation to guess every time a heavier unit rolls in. That is the recurring lesson with a 2 post car lift: buy capacity for your worst week, not your average Tuesday.
Overhead vs Baseplate: The Real Deciding Factors
Everyone asks this question and almost everyone asks it in the wrong order. The question is not “which is better.” It is “what does my building allow, and what am I driving under the lift?” Overhead (clear-floor) models run the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a top beam between the columns. Baseplate models run everything through a low channel across the floor. Overhead gives you a completely unobstructed floor. Baseplate gives you unobstructed height.
In this shop’s case the mezzanine settled it. Under the loft, usable height dropped to roughly eleven feet, and the ceiling was interrupted by joists and conduit. An overhead unit with a top beam and a shutoff bar would have eaten the working height they needed for taller tow vehicles, and mounting the beam under a structural loft is a headache nobody enjoys. Baseplate it was. We do the same math constantly — one lead we worked in North Dakota had a hard 139-inch maximum height and no realistic overhead option, so baseplate was the only honest answer. The tradeoff is a raised channel across the bay floor that you feel with a floor jack and a transmission jack. Our advice, which this shop followed, is to plan your roll-around tooling around that channel from day one instead of cursing it for a year. If your ceiling is generous and your floor traffic is heavy, flip the decision and go overhead.
Concrete: The Part That Actually Fails Installs
We have walked away from more jobs over concrete than over any other single issue. A two-post concentrates the entire weight of the vehicle plus the overturning moment into eight to twelve anchors in two small footprints. That is a genuinely violent load path, and it does not care how nice your building looks. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most want more than that for higher-capacity columns — some 12,000 and 15,000 lb models specify six inches.
The Iowa City shop had a slab poured in the mid-90s with no documentation. We cored it. Five and a quarter inches, decent aggregate, no rebar but no obvious cracking within eight feet of either column location. That passed. We have had the opposite outcome plenty of times — a customer down in northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less,” and when we asked what it was poured over, nobody knew. In cases like that the fix is a pair of engineered pads: saw-cut a section at each column, dig out, and pour fresh footings tied to the surrounding slab. It adds cost and about a week of cure time, and it is dramatically cheaper than a column pulling anchors with a truck in the air. If you are pricing a 2 post car lift and the quote you got says nothing about your slab, that quote is incomplete.
Install Day and the Things Nobody Photographs
Install on a two-post is not glamorous. We set the column locations with a chalk line and a laser, verify square across the diagonals, then drill. Anchor holes get vacuumed and blown clean — dust in the hole is the number-one cause of anchors that never reach spec torque. Columns get shimmed plumb, and we do not accept “close enough” here, because a column leaning a quarter-degree out of plumb turns into a carriage that binds under load and a safety lock that clacks unevenly on the way up.
Then comes the part customers underestimate: power. This shop had a single 120V circuit in that bay and a lift motor that wanted 208-230V single phase. That meant an electrician, a new home run, and a disconnect within sight of the unit. Budget for it. We also bled the hydraulics, cycled the carriages a dozen times empty, checked that both safety locks engaged simultaneously at every notch, and loaded it with a shop truck to verify level lift. Total time on site was most of a day. The shop wanted to use it that afternoon. We made them wait on anchor cure and hydraulic settling, which is the least popular sentence we say on any install. A 2 post car lift that gets used correctly on day one usually gets used correctly on day four hundred.
The First Differential Service on the New Lift
Two days after install they ran a dually through for front and rear diff fluid plus a transfer case. The tech’s report back to us was the whole reason they bought the thing: he did the job standing upright, drained both housings into a pan on a wheeled cart, cleaned and RTV’d the rear cover, and pumped fresh gear oil in with a hand pump he could actually see the fill hole with. Time on the job dropped by roughly a third compared to the way they had been doing it on jack stands.
What surprised them was arm positioning. Long-wheelbase trucks and vans want the lift set up asymmetric-ish, with the vehicle biased rearward so the doors clear the columns and the center of gravity sits properly between the carriages. Their unit has telescoping three-stage front arms and standard rears, and it took a few vehicles before the crew developed muscle memory for which pickup points work on which chassis. We left them a laminated sheet of lift point references and told them to keep the factory manual for anything unfamiliar. The other adjustment was pad height. Truck frames sit high enough that they run stacked adapters constantly, and stacking adapters is exactly where people get sloppy. We set a rule with them: never more than two stacked pucks, and always visually confirm all four pads are seated before you pass the first safety lock.
Twelve Months of Maintenance on a 2 Post Car Lift
The maintenance list is short and almost nobody does it. Monthly: grease the carriage slide blocks or rollers per the manual, check hydraulic fluid level with the carriages fully down, inspect the arm restraint gears for wear, and eyeball the anchor bolts for any gap under the base plate. Quarterly: check equalization cable tension and look for broken strands, corrosion, or a cable rubbing where it should not. Annually: a full inspection, ideally by someone who does this for a living, following ANSI/ALI ALCTV guidance.
This shop’s twelve-month inspection turned up exactly two items — slightly loose cable tension causing about half an inch of carriage lag side to side, and one arm restraint pin that needed cleaning and lubrication. Both were ten-minute fixes because they were caught early. That is the argument for maintenance in a nutshell. The failure we get called about most often is not dramatic; it is a lift that quietly drifted out of spec for three years until something let go. Nine times out of ten that is a stuck or bypassing lowering valve, a clogged suction screen, or a pump that has lost its prime — cheap parts, expensive downtime. What We’d Tell the Next Shop Making This Decision
Start with the building, not the brochure. Measure your true usable ceiling height at the lowest obstruction in the bay, not at the peak. Find out what your slab actually is, and if you cannot find out, core it. Confirm you have or can get the right voltage within reach. Measure the bay width and remember you need door-swing clearance on both sides of the vehicle, which usually means twelve feet minimum between obstructions and more if you like being comfortable. Those four numbers eliminate most of the catalog before you ever compare features.
After that, be honest about the work. If you are doing suspension, exhaust, driveline and diff service, a two-post is the right tool and a four-post is not. If you are doing alignments and storing a collection, flip that. If you are doing both, some shops run one of each, and there are also scissor and mid-rise options that fill in around the edges for tire and brake work. And spend the money on capacity and on a brand that still has parts support in ten years — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak and Atlas all fit that description in their respective segments.
