A guy in Waukee called us last spring because he was tired of doing differential fluid on his ramps with a drain pan balanced on a floor jack, and he wanted a 2 post car lift in his shop before summer. He had a model number written on a sticky note, a ceiling height he’d guessed at, and a budget. That’s a normal place to start, and it’s also exactly where most purchases go sideways — because the model number on the sticky note almost never matches the building. Here’s the order we walk it in, spec by spec.

Start With the Heaviest Vehicle You’ll Actually Lift
Everybody wants to talk capacity first, and that’s fine, but the honest question isn’t “how much can it lift” — it’s “what’s the heaviest thing that will ever go up on it.” The Waukee customer’s answer was a 5,800 lb three-quarter-ton pickup he does diff service on twice a year, plus a sedan and a small SUV. That’s a 10,000 lb class machine all day long, with real margin. We hear “under 3 tons, mainly maintenance” from hobbyist callers constantly, and those folks are technically fine on a 9,000 lb unit — but the price gap between 9K and 10K is small enough that we almost always steer people up.
Where capacity gets misread is weight distribution rather than gross weight. A two-post carries the vehicle on four arm pads, and a long-wheelbase truck loads the rear arms harder than the fronts. Manufacturers publish a front/rear split — often something like 60/40 — and if you’re routinely putting a diesel nose over the front arms you want to know that number. We also ask whether a project car with the engine pulled will ever go up, because an empty shell shifts the balance rearward in a way that surprises people. Get the heaviest-vehicle answer written down honestly, then pick capacity with room to spare. Nobody has ever complained to us about having too much lift.
Ceiling Height Decides Clearfloor vs. Baseplate
This is the spec that kills more orders than any other. A clearfloor two-post routes the equalizer cables and hoses through an overhead beam, which gives you a clean floor to roll a transmission jack across but demands real ceiling height — generally 12 feet minimum, and more if you want to raise a tall vehicle to full height. A baseplate model runs everything through a channel at the floor, so it fits under a low ceiling, but you’re stepping over that channel every time you cross the bay.
We had a caller from out of state with a hard 139-inch maximum height who was convinced he needed clearfloor because that’s what he’d seen online. At 11 feet 7 inches he had no business with an overhead beam and a truck on the arms — baseplate was the only honest answer, and once he understood why, the decision took about ninety seconds. The Waukee garage had 12-foot trusses, which put clearfloor back on the table, but we still measured to the lowest obstruction: garage door track, opener rail, light fixtures, a sprinkler head. The published overhead height on a spec sheet is the column-to-beam dimension, not the clearance you need above your tallest vehicle. Measure to the actual lowest thing in the ceiling plane and work down from there. If your door track hangs into the bay, a jackshaft opener conversion is often cheaper than changing lift styles.
Concrete: Thickness, Cure, and What Anchors Need
Most manufacturers spec a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb two-post, and plenty specify more. The word “minimum” does a lot of work there. We’ve drilled test holes in Iowa garage slabs that measured five inches at the door and barely three near the back wall, because the pour crew screeded to a grade and nobody checked. One customer in Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less” — that “maybe less” is the part you verify with a rotary hammer and a tape before anything gets bolted down.
Reinforcement, cure age, and what’s under the slab matter too. Fresh concrete needs roughly 28 days before it holds anchors at rated pull-out. Fiber mesh isn’t the same as rebar. If your slab is thin or cracked, the fix is a poured footing pad under each column — typically a four-by-four-foot section cut out and replaced at eight to twelve inches, tied to the existing slab. It’s not glamorous work and it adds a few hundred dollars plus cure time, but it’s the difference between a machine that holds anchor torque for twenty years and one that starts working loose in a season. We’d rather quote you a footing than come back to a lift with loose base plates. Anchor spec is also brand-specific, so don’t substitute hardware from the big-box aisle.
Symmetric, Asymmetric, or Versymmetric for Diff Work
Arm geometry is where a 2 post car lift earns its keep on the specific job you bought it for. Symmetric puts the columns directly across from each other and centers the vehicle between them — great load balance, but the doors open right into the posts, which is miserable if you climb in and out a lot. Asymmetric rotates the columns and uses short front arms and long rear arms so the vehicle sits back and the doors clear. Versymmetric designs, which is what most of the current Rotary and Challenger models do, give you both positions on the same machine.
For differential fluid service specifically, what you care about is unobstructed access to the pumpkin and room to swing a bar under the rear axle. Asymmetric loading pushes the vehicle rearward, which can put the rear arms and the axle closer together than you’d like on a short-bed truck. We usually recommend loading a truck symmetrically for underbody work and using the asymmetric position for cars you’re getting into and out of. The other spec to check is arm pad height at the lowest setting — a drop-end arm with a low collapsed height reaches a unibody pinch weld without stacking three inches of adapters, and a screw pad with real travel handles a lifted truck frame. Those two numbers are on every spec sheet and almost nobody reads them.
Comparing the Model Numbers You’ll Actually See
Once you start shopping, the model soup gets confusing fast. On the commercial side, the Rotary SPO10 and SPOA10 families are the 10,000 lb clearfloor workhorses — symmetric and asymmetric respectively — with the SPO12 stepping up to 12,000 for heavier trucks. Challenger’s CL10 series covers the same ground with slightly different arm packages. On the home and light-commercial side, BendPak’s XPR-10S is the symmetric clearfloor 10,000 lb unit with an expandable top beam, telescoping screw pads, an overhead safety shutoff bar, and drop-end arms — a well-specced machine for a serious hobby garage. When people ask us to compare, we line up five numbers side by side: rated capacity, maximum lifting height, minimum pad height, overall width between columns, and drive-thru clearance. That last one gets ignored and it’s the one you feel every single day, because it’s the gap you steer a mirror through. A 2 post car lift with 100 inches of drive-thru versus one with 92 inches doesn’t sound like much until you’re threading a dually into the bay. We also weigh parts availability heavily. Rotary and Challenger cables, cylinders, and lock assemblies we stock or source in days. Some import brands we can only match by measuring your old part and cross-referencing, which means downtime.
Power, Air, and the Stuff That Isn’t on the Brochure
Every two-post needs electricity, and the standard power unit is a 220V single-phase motor drawing on the order of 20 to 30 amps depending on the model. A lot of Iowa garages have a single 240V circuit already run for a welder or a compressor, and folks assume they’ll share it. You can’t — the lift needs its own dedicated circuit and disconnect, and an electrician’s half-day is a real line item you should budget for before you buy. Some units offer 110V power packs, and they work, but they’re slower and they run the motor harder.
Air is the other one. Most modern two-posts use an air-release mechanism for the mechanical locks, which means you need a shop air line to the column — typically 30 PSI or better — or the locks won’t disengage on the way down. If you don’t have a compressor in that bay yet, add it to the plan. Beyond utilities, budget for the small things that show up on the invoice: an approach ramp set if you’re lifting anything low, extra truck adapters or stackable pad extensions, a bottle of the correct hydraulic fluid, and anchor bolts sized for your actual slab thickness. On a $4,000 machine, the surrounding costs can add fifteen or twenty percent. Knowing that up front is the difference between a good purchase and a frustrating one, and it’s why we walk through the whole plan before quoting.
How We’d Run Your Pre-Purchase Checklist
Here’s the sequence we use on the phone, and you can run it yourself in twenty minutes with a tape measure. One: write down the heaviest vehicle, curb weight, and wheelbase. Two: measure ceiling height to the lowest obstruction in the bay, not the peak. Three: measure bay width and note anything against the walls — a loft on one side and a wall on the other, which is what one Missouri customer had, changes column placement completely. Four: drill or core a test hole and confirm slab thickness and cure age. Five: decide whether you’re getting in and out of vehicles a lot, which drives the symmetric-versus-asymmetric call.
