A 2 post car lift is usually the first big purchase a European marque specialty shop makes, and in our experience it is also the one most often bought at the wrong point in the build-out. We got a call last spring from a shop north of Ankeny that had just signed a lease on a clean little two-bay building, poured a fresh apron out front, hung the compressor, run the air lines along the ceiling, and mounted the lighting grid — all before anyone measured for lift columns or checked what was under the floor. By the time they called us, half of those decisions had to be undone. This article is about the sequencing myths that create that kind of expensive backtracking, and how we tell Iowa shops to order the work instead.

Myth One: You Pick the Lift Last

The single most common mistake we see is treating the lift as a piece of furniture that gets dropped in once the shop is finished. It is not furniture. It is the largest anchored structure in the building, it dictates where your air drops go, where your lighting can hang, where your drains can sit, and how wide your drive aisle has to be. Every other decision in a two-bay build-out should be made downstream of the lift, not upstream. When a shop calls us after the ceiling grid is up, we are almost always looking at either a relocation of that grid or a switch to a baseplate model that the owner did not want.

For a European marque shop this matters even more than for a general repair operation. Modern Audi, BMW and Mercedes chassis have specific factory jacking points, sill construction that will crush if you catch it wrong, and long wheelbases that push arm reach. Choosing your equipment first lets you pick the arm geometry your fleet actually needs — usually asymmetric with three-stage front arms for the shorter nose of a Golf or a 3-Series, and enough rear reach for a wagon or an SUV. Once the pads and arms are settled, the bay layout falls out of it naturally. Pick the columns first, then build the shop around them.

Myth Two: Four Inches of Concrete Is Four Inches of Concrete

We hear “the concrete is about four inches” more than any other sentence in this business, and it is almost always a guess. A shop owner in the Ankeny area told us his slab was four to five inches based on what the previous tenant said. We cored it and found three and a half inches over uncompacted fill in one corner and closer to six in another. That variation is the difference between a safe installation and a set of anchors that will eventually work loose under load.

Most commercial two-post models want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many want more once you get above 10,000 pounds of capacity. Age matters too — a slab needs to be fully cured, typically 28 days minimum, before anyone drills an anchor into it. If your slab does not measure up, the fix is not exotic. We cut out a section, pour a proper footing pad at the required depth and PSI, let it cure, and set the columns on that. It adds a week and a modest line item to the project, and it is far cheaper than dealing with a column that has shifted. The point is to core the floor before you commit to a model, not after the freight truck shows up. Concrete is the foundation of the whole conversation, literally.

Myth Three: Clearfloor Is Always Better Than Baseplate

Overhead clearfloor models are popular for good reason — nothing crosses the floor between the columns, so you can roll a transmission jack or a tire cart straight through without tripping. But a lot of buyers treat clearfloor as automatically superior, and it is not. It costs you ceiling height. A typical overhead model needs roughly twelve feet to the underside of the beam, and the shutoff bar sits lower than that. We have quoted shops with an eleven-foot ceiling who insisted on overhead and then had to eat the difference.

Baseplate models route the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a low channel across the floor, which lets you run them under ceilings in the ten to eleven foot range. A hobbyist in North Dakota called us about exactly this situation — a hard maximum of 139 inches to the ceiling, a heaviest vehicle around 6,000 pounds, and no interest in an overhead configuration. Baseplate was the obvious answer and it saved him money on top of it. For a European marque shop that mostly does wheel and brake work rather than tall van service, the low crossover is a non-issue. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the bay — a fire sprinkler head, a ductwork run, a garage door track in the open position — and let that number decide, not a preference you picked up on a forum.

Tire Rotation and Wheel Work: Why the Lift Choice Changes

A shop that lives on tire rotations, alignments, brake service and wheel refinishing uses a lift very differently from one doing engine-out work. You are up and down twenty times a day, you need the wheels free and spinning, and you need clean access to all four corners at once with a torque wrench and an impact. That workflow favors a symmetric or asymmetric two-post with a good spread between the arms, drop-end arms so you can get a low pad height under a lowered car, and screw pads with enough extension to reach the pinch weld on a car with plastic aero cladding.

Where shops get burned is on adapters. Most European vehicles need a pinch-weld adapter with a slot, and a fair number of newer models want a flat rubber block with a specific height. If you buy a 2 post car lift and skip the adapter kit, your techs will improvise, and improvising under a heavy car is how sills get bent and comebacks get created. We tell every specialty shop to budget for a full adapter set on day one and a spare set within the first year, because they walk off, they crack, and they get left in the bed of somebody’s truck. On a high-volume tire and wheel operation, the adapters are consumables, not accessories. Order them as part of the lift, not later.

Sequencing the Build-Out: The Order We Actually Recommend

Here is the order we give shops when they call us before pouring money into a build. First, core the concrete and get real numbers. Second, measure ceiling height to the lowest obstruction and note where sprinkler heads and ductwork sit. Third, select the lift — capacity, symmetric or asymmetric, overhead or baseplate — and get the exact footprint drawing from the manufacturer. Fourth, mark the column locations on the floor with tape and roll your actual customer cars through the space to check the drive aisle and door swing. Fifth, and only then, plan electrical, air, lighting and drains around the marked layout.

Most shops try to do steps five and one at the same time, and that is where the rework comes from. Electrical is the biggest offender. A two-post typically needs a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit at the power unit, and the power unit sits on a specific column depending on the model. If the electrician has already stubbed out on the wrong side, you are either extending conduit or paying to move a panel. Same with lighting: hang a fixture directly over the lift path and you will hit it with a roof rack eventually. Sequencing is free if you do it in the right order and expensive if you do not. What a Realistic Budget Looks Like

Budget conversations get uncomfortable fast, so we like to be blunt about them. Entry-level 10,000 pound two-post units from the value brands land in the low four-figure range for the bare lift. Mid-tier commercial units from BendPak and Atlas sit meaningfully above that. Rotary and Challenger commercial-grade columns — the ones built for a shop cycling a lift thirty times a day for fifteen years — run higher still, and they are worth it in a production environment. A homeowner told us he did not see the point of spending five figures on a lift for his own garage, and he was right for his use case. A shop billing hours on that lift every day is making a different calculation entirely.

Then add the things people forget: freight, offloading if you do not have a forklift, an electrician for the dedicated circuit, concrete remediation if the core comes back short, adapters, and installation. Installation on a 2 post car lift is not the place to save money — anchor torque, column plumb, cable tension and safety lock synchronization all have to be right, and a mis-set lock is a genuine hazard. What is not fine is pricing the lift alone and then getting surprised by three thousand dollars of everything else.

Buying a 2 Post Car Lift That Still Makes Sense in Year Ten

The last myth worth killing is that all two-post lifts are basically the same casting with different paint. They are not. Parts availability is the difference that shows up in year six, when a cable stretches or a carriage slider wears or a lock dog stops releasing cleanly. A Challenger two-post came in recently with a motor running, fluid full, no visible leak, and no lift — a classic internal bypass or check valve issue that took one part and an hour to sort out because the parts were on the shelf.

That is the real argument for buying a well-supported 2 post car lift instead of the cheapest column set you can find on a marketplace. Ten years from now you want to be able to describe the symptom to somebody who has heard it a hundred times and get the right seal kit or cable set shipped the same week. For a European marque shop with a full schedule, a lift down for three weeks waiting on an overseas part is a real revenue problem.
