If you run a European-marque specialty shop in Davenport working on Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and the occasional Range Rover, a 2 post car lift is the workhorse you touch every hour of every shift. The problem is that most of the advice online about which lift to buy is written for domestic pickup shops, not for a bay full of aluminum bodies, sensitive rocker sills, and long wheelbases. We install and service lifts across eastern Iowa, and we hear the same myths repeated by shops that got burned before they called us. This is our field-tested rundown of what actually matters when a Euro shop picks a two-post, and which of the loudest “rules” you can safely ignore.

Myth 1: A 9,000 lb lift is “plenty” for European cars
On paper it looks fine. A modern BMW 5-series curbs at around 4,200 lb, a Range Rover at 5,500 lb, a Cayenne Turbo pushes 5,300 lb. Nine thousand pounds of rated capacity sounds like it clears everything with room to spare. In practice the capacity number is only half the answer. The other half is arm reach and pad geometry, and 9,000 lb-class arms tend to be shorter and thinner-walled than what we recommend for long-wheelbase German platforms.
Our default for a Euro shop is a 10,000 or 12,000 lb 2 post car lift with three-stage front arms and telescoping rear arms. The extra capacity is not because your cars are heavier, it is because heavier arms flex less at full extension, and full extension is where you live when you are catching a long sedan or a wagon on the factory jack points. Pay for the arms and pads even if you never approach the rated capacity.
Myth 2: Symmetric is always the wrong choice for cars
The internet loves to tell you that asymmetric is “the car lift” and symmetric is only for trucks. It is not that simple. Asymmetric columns are rotated so the driver door opens between the posts, which is fantastic on the vast majority of passenger cars. But when you spend your week on Sprinter vans, long-wheelbase SUVs, and the occasional Bentley, you may not want that rotation because the front tire ends up boxed against the column.
A shop we work with west of Davenport ended up specifying two two-post bays: one asymmetric for the daily 3-series and Cayenne work, and one symmetric versa-lift for vans and their longer specialty projects. If you can only afford one bay, a versa-symmetric 2 post car lift with drop-end arms is our usual recommendation because you can load it either way and adjust as your mix shifts.
Myth 3: Any pad will do if you use hockey pucks
Aluminum rocker sills on newer Audis and BMWs are the fastest way to turn a good lift purchase into a warranty nightmare. The pinch-weld crush pads that ship stock with most two-posts are designed for domestic steel rockers, not for a thin aluminum extrusion with a plastic sill cover on top. Hockey pucks stacked on stock pads are a hack, not a solution.
Buy or spec the factory adapter kits. Rotary sells slotted frame adapters and stackable truck adapters that seat cleanly under the manufacturer-marked jack points, and Challenger has similar pad extensions. Budget for pad kits at the same time you budget for the lift. We include them at cost in our shop quotes because we would rather help a European specialist buy the right pads once than replace a lift that got returned by an insurer after a body drop.
The parts pipeline problem nobody warns you about
When you pick a 2 post car lift for a specialty shop, you are also picking a parts pipeline. Cheap grey-market imports save you two thousand dollars at purchase and cost you a week of downtime the first time a hydraulic hose blows or a locking latch snaps. We stock cables, cylinders, latch kits, arm restraints, and safety pieces for Rotary and Challenger going back decades, and we ship out of Iowa on the same afternoon a shop calls.
For European specialists this matters double. Your customers do not accept a week of downtime because you cannot get a $180 lock release cable. Ask any vendor two questions before you sign: which brand distributor stocks parts for this exact model in the Midwest, and how long has that distributor been at that address. If the answers are “the factory in China” and “three years,” you know what you are buying.
Concrete, ceilings, and the Davenport garage reality
Davenport shops have a mix of building stock: older Bettendorf-adjacent light industrial with 12-foot clear ceilings and marginal slabs, and newer suburban commercial condo bays with 14-foot ceilings and 6-inch reinforced slabs. Which building you are in dictates whether an overhead 2 post car lift is even legal for you to install, and whether you need a baseplate model instead.
Our rule of thumb: overhead models need at least 12 feet of usable clear height above the highest fixture, and 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete anchored per the manufacturer spec. Under those numbers, use a baseplate. On older buildings we routinely core-drill for a rebar map before we set anchor patterns. We would rather delay an install a day for a scan than punch through a post-tension slab. Ask us for a slab check before you order.
Oil pan work: what actually earns the lift its keep
Oil pan gasket replacement is one of the most common jobs on a European specialty ticket, and it is the job that reveals whether you bought the right two-post. VW/Audi 2.0T pans require the front subframe to drop or at least tilt, which means arm placement on the lift has to be exact so the subframe bolts are not fouled by the arm swing. BMW N-series and S-series pans want a very specific lift geometry to allow the pan to drop straight down without hitting the front subframe crossmember.
This is where three-stage telescoping arms plus proper stackable adapter kits pay off. On a well-configured 2 post car lift with the right adapters, an oil pan gasket job is a two-hour ticket. On a marginal lift with the wrong arms it turns into three hours of shuffling and cursing. Multiply that across 300 pan jobs a year and you have paid for the better lift twice.
