A specialty shop in western Illinois that works almost exclusively on German and British marques called us last spring because their strut work was taking twice as long as it should. They blamed the technicians. It wasn’t the technicians — it was the 2 post car lift they’d inherited when they bought the building, an unbadged import with arms that couldn’t reach a modern Audi’s pinch weld pockets without a stack of adapters. We drove over, measured the bay, and walked them through what was actually true and what was shop-floor folklore. That conversation is the backbone of this article. If you run a European marque specialty shop and suspension work is your bread and butter, most of what you’ve heard about lift selection is half right, which is worse than being wrong.

Myth One: All ALI Certification Is The Same

This is the myth we hear most often, and it’s the one that costs shops the most in an insurance review. ALI — the Automotive Lift Institute — runs a third-party certification program where a lift model is tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards by an independent lab, and the manufacturer’s production is audited on an ongoing basis. What shops get wrong is assuming a manufacturer’s own claim of “meets ALI standards” is the same thing as carrying the gold ALI certification label. It is not. The gold label means an outside body verified the load testing, the safety systems, the labeling, and the manual — and keeps verifying it. A self-declaration means somebody in marketing typed a sentence.

For a European marque shop this matters more than for a general repair garage, because you’re routinely holding a 5,500 lb electric SUV or a long-wheelbase sedan in the air while a tech is under it with a spring compressor. If your carrier ever asks for documentation after an incident, “the brochure said it met standards” is not documentation. The ALI directory is public and searchable by model number. We tell every shop the same thing: look up the exact model and capacity you’re buying, not the family name. A manufacturer can have three certified models and two that never went through the process. Myth Two: More Capacity Always Means A Better Lift

Shops fixate on the capacity number because it’s the easiest thing to compare. A 12,000 lb unit sounds twice as serious as a 10,000 lb unit, so it must be twice as good. In practice, for a European specialty shop, capacity is rarely the binding constraint. The heaviest thing rolling through most Euro shops is a loaded Q7, X7, or an electric sedan in the 5,500 to 6,200 lb range. A properly certified 10,000 lb two-post has enormous margin on that. What actually limits you is arm geometry, pad height range, and column spacing — none of which improve just because you bought more tonnage.

Where capacity does matter is if you plan to take in Sprinter-based service vans or full-size domestic trucks as overflow work. Then step up to 12,000 or 15,000 lb, and expect the column spacing, the overall height, and the concrete requirements to grow with it. But buying a 15,000 lb unit “to be safe” while ignoring that its arms won’t drop low enough for a lowered coupe is a bad trade. We’ve swapped out perfectly healthy high-capacity lifts for smaller ones because the shop couldn’t service half its clientele. Match the equipment to the cars in your bays this month, plus a reasonable margin, and put the savings into a better arm package and a taller column if your ceiling allows it.

Myth Three: A 2 Post Car Lift Can’t Handle Suspension Work

We hear this from shops that got burned once on a poorly set up bay and decided the whole category was the problem. The reality is that a well-specified 2 post car lift is the correct tool for suspension and shock replacement, because it leaves the wheels hanging free and the entire underside open. A four-post is the wrong tool for strut work unless you add rolling jacks, and even then you’re working around runways. The frame-engaging design is what makes the job possible in the first place.

What separates a good suspension bay from a frustrating one is the details. Drop-end arms — the ones with a stepped-down section at the pad end — let you get under low-profile cars without ramping. Three-stage front arms give you the reach to pick up a long wheelbase without extending past the arm’s rated envelope. Screw-up telescoping pads with a range of roughly 4 to 8 inches of adjustment mean you can clear rocker cladding on a modern German sedan without stacking three blocks. And a truck adapter set that lives on the wall, not buried in a drawer, means techs actually use the right pad instead of improvising. When a western Illinois shop tells us suspension work is slow, nine times out of ten the fix is an arm and adapter package, not a whole new lift.

Myth Four: Overhead Or Baseplate Is Purely A Ceiling Question

Everyone knows the basic rule: low ceiling means baseplate, high ceiling means overhead clear-floor. That’s true as far as it goes, but it’s not the whole decision. We had a shop with a 13-foot ceiling insist on overhead because that’s what “real shops” run — and then discover their tallest regular customer vehicle triggered the shutoff bar constantly, and the crossbar sat right where they wanted to run a hose reel.

The honest comparison: an overhead configuration keeps the floor completely clear, which is genuinely better for rolling toolboxes, floor jacks, and sweeping. The tradeoff is total height, typically 12 to 14 feet depending on model, plus the shutoff bar limiting how tall a vehicle you can raise fully. A baseplate configuration runs the hydraulic lines and equalizing cables through a low channel at floor level, so your ceiling requirement drops to roughly 11 feet or less on many models, and there’s nothing above the vehicle at all. The cost is a small ridge you’ll roll over a few thousand times a year. For a Euro shop with a mixed fleet and a ceiling under 12 feet, baseplate is usually the right call. Above 13 feet with mostly cars, overhead wins. Measure to the lowest obstruction — a light fixture, a truss, a door track — not to the peak.

Myth Five: Four Inches Of Concrete Is Always Enough

The spec sheet number most shops remember is “4 inches minimum,” and they stop reading there. The actual requirement on most 10,000 lb two-post models is 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI minimum concrete, cured at least 28 days, reinforced, and — this is the part everybody skips — with adequate distance from any expansion joint, saw cut, or slab edge. A column anchored six inches from a control joint has a fraction of the pullout resistance the engineering assumed.

We’ve cored a lot of Midwest shop floors, and older commercial buildings in river towns are unpredictable. We’ve found 6 inches on one side of a bay and 3.5 inches on the other because a trench was cut and patched decades ago. The only way to know is to core test, which takes an hour and is cheap insurance. If the slab comes back thin, you’re not out of luck — the standard remedy is cutting out a pad section per column, typically a 4-by-4 or 5-by-5 foot footprint, and pouring new reinforced concrete to depth. Adding a couple of inches of topping over a weak slab does not work; the anchors need continuous depth. When a shop tells us the concrete “seems fine,” we ask how they know. Nine times out of ten the answer is that it looks fine, and looking fine is not a load rating.

Myth Six: Installation Is Just Bolting Columns To The Floor

Anchoring is maybe twenty percent of a correct installation. The rest is squaring the columns to each other and to the bay, setting the correct spacing for the arm sweep you need, plumbing the columns within tolerance, torquing anchors to spec in sequence, bleeding the hydraulic system fully, and then — the step people skip — checking and adjusting cable or chain equalization so both carriages rise together within the manufacturer’s tolerance. A lift that’s out of equalization by an inch will chew through slider blocks and eventually put uneven load into one column.

Then there’s commissioning: cycling the lift through its full travel unloaded, verifying every safety lock engages audibly at every position, testing the single-point release, confirming the overhead shutoff bar or low-ceiling limit functions, and load testing. Documentation matters too — the ALI Lifting It Right materials, the safety placards, and an operator training session for every tech who will touch the equipment. If you go that route, budget a full day with two people, rent a real rotary hammer, and buy a torque wrench that reads in the range your anchors require. Myth Seven: Maintenance Means Greasing It When You Remember

The most expensive failures we get called out for are not sudden. They’re the end result of two years of nobody looking at anything. On a 2 post car lift, the wear items are predictable: equalization cables or chains, slider blocks in the columns, arm restraint gears, safety lock pawls, hydraulic hoses, and the cylinder seals. Every one of those gives you warning before it fails, and every one of those is cheap compared to the alternative.

Our recommended rhythm for a busy specialty shop: daily, a quick visual and listen for locks engaging on the way up. Monthly, wipe and inspect the cables end to end for broken strands, fraying at the sheaves, or corrosion, check fluid level, and lubricate the columns and arm pivots. Quarterly, torque check the anchors and inspect the arm restraints under load. Annually, a full ALI-standard inspection by a qualified inspector — required by ANSI/ALI ALOIM and increasingly asked for by insurance carriers. When a call comes in like the one we got from a shop with a Challenger unit where the motor ran, fluid was full, and nothing leaked but the carriage wouldn’t move, it’s usually a stuck lowering valve, air trapped in the system, or a failed pump coupler — all diagnosable in twenty minutes and all fixable with parts we stock.
