A 2 post car lift is not just a 2 post car lift once you start pulling battery packs or setting up a body-off restoration bay, and we’ve watched more than one southeast Iowa shop owner learn that the hard way. We got a call last year from a small EV specialty shop working out of a converted body shop building near Fairfield, wanting to know why the used lift they’d bought off a classified ad kept throwing a fault code every time they tried to lift a Model 3 with the battery pack partially unbolted. The short answer: it was the wrong lift for the job, and nobody had checked the specs before it got dropped off the truck. Myth #1: Any 12,000 lb 2 post car lift can handle an EV battery pull

This is the single biggest misunderstanding we run into. Capacity rating tells you how much total weight the lift can hold in the air, not how well it handles a load that shifts as you remove components. When a technician unbolts a battery pack, an engine cradle, or a subframe, the vehicle’s weight distribution changes mid-job, and generic pad placement on a standard 2 post car lift can put the car in a precarious position. Shops doing EV battery work or heavy metal fabrication need to think about arm reach and pad contact points specifically, not just the number on the capacity sticker.

We steer restoration and EV shops toward asymmetric arm designs with a wider swing range, because you need pad placement flexibility for stripped-down chassis that don’t have factory lift points anymore. A Rotary SPOA9 or a heavier-duty Rotary SPOA12 gives more arm travel than a bargain import lift rated for the same weight. If your shop is doing body-off work or battery service regularly, spec the lift for the job, not just the tonnage number on the spec sheet.

Myth #2: Height and clearance don’t matter if the lift fits in the bay

We get calls constantly from shops who bought a 2 post car lift based on floor footprint alone, then realized the overhead clearance or the columns themselves interfere with the work they actually do. For restoration shops pulling engines with an overhead hoist, or EV shops needing extra vertical room to maneuver a battery pack out from underneath, the total lift height and the clear space between columns both matter as much as the footprint.

One thing we always check before quoting a move or a new install is garage door clearance — we need at least an inch of clearance from the bottom of the door opening to the highest point on the lift when it’s up on casters if a shop wants to roll it fully assembled from one bay to another. Restoration shops especially tend to reconfigure their bays as projects change, so that clearance number matters more for them than for a typical quick-lube shop running the same car in and out all day.

Myth #3: A used 2 post car lift is always cheaper in the long run

We’ve inspected plenty of used lifts for southeast Iowa shops, and the pattern repeats: someone buys a used 2 post car lift without the original floor anchors, without service records, and without knowing the actual age of the cylinders. Anchors that were cut off before a previous move need to be replaced and re-drilled to the new pad, and that’s not optional for safety compliance. We’ve seen a residential setup where the lift was six or seven years old with chain and cable style locks, moved outdoors, and needing full reinstallation on a fresh footer — workable, but only if you budget for the anchor work up front.

Cylinder condition is the other hidden cost. We’ve done cylinder rebuilds on Rotary and Magnum-branded 2 post units where both cylinders were leaking at the base, which usually means a full reseal rather than a quick patch. If you’re shopping used for a restoration or EV bay, get the cylinders and hydraulic lines inspected before you commit, not after it’s already bolted to your floor.

Myth #4: Every 2 post car lift model is basically interchangeable

Model numbers exist for a reason, and shops doing specialized work should actually read them. A Rotary SPOA9 tops out lower than a Rotary X14 or a heavier Challenger CL10 series unit, and the arm geometry differs enough that swapping models changes how you approach a job. Challenger’s industrial-strength CL10V3 versymmetric lift is built differently than their more standard VLE10, even though both land in the same 10,000 lb class — the versymmetric arm design gives restoration shops more flexibility for awkward pad placement on partially disassembled vehicles.

For EV shops specifically, we usually recommend comparing at least two model tiers before buying, because the difference in arm reach and lift height between a base 9,000 lb 2 post car lift and a step-up 12,000 lb model with longer arms is often worth more than the price gap suggests. Don’t assume the cheapest model in the capacity range you need will actually fit your workflow.

Myth #5: Installation logistics are the installer’s problem, not yours

Every install and every move we quote depends heavily on what’s already on site. Do you have a forklift or a roll-back truck available? Is there a pit, or is this a straightforward slab install? What’s the concrete thickness and cure time at the new location? We’ve moved 2 post car lifts across shop floors that were nine or ten feet apart, and we’ve also disassembled units completely to move them across town — the difference in cost and timeline between those two scenarios is significant, and it’s driven entirely by what the shop can tell us up front.

Restoration and EV shops in particular tend to be mid-renovation when they call us, which means concrete pours, electrical work, and lift installs are all happening close together. Tell your installer about that timeline honestly. We’d rather delay a quote by a day to confirm concrete cure time than install a 2 post car lift on a pad that isn’t ready, because redoing anchor work after the fact costs everyone more time and money.

Myth #6: Warranty and service don’t matter until something breaks

We hear this from shop owners who are focused entirely on sticker price. But EV and restoration work is hard on lifts — longer cycle times per vehicle, more repositioning, more time spent with the vehicle partially disassembled and sitting at height. A 2 post car lift with weak warranty support or a distributor who’s hard to reach when a hydraulic line bulges or a motor quits is going to cost you real downtime.

We’ve handled service calls where a lift’s hydraulic line developed a bulge and started leaking, and getting a technician out fast mattered because the bay was down until it was fixed. When you’re comparing models, ask who actually services that brand in Iowa, how fast they can get parts, and whether cylinder rebuild kits are readily available. A lift that’s slightly more expensive up front but backed by a responsive local installer usually wins over the cheaper option with a six-week parts wait.

Myth #7: One lift configuration works for every bay in the shop

Shops that run multiple bays sometimes assume they should standardize on one 2 post car lift model everywhere for simplicity. That works fine for a general repair shop, but EV and restoration shops usually benefit from mixing lift types by bay function. A bay dedicated to battery service might do better with a scissor or mid-rise lift alongside the 2 post units, while a metal fab bay doing frame work might need the taller lift height and arm reach of a heavier-duty 2 post model. Standardizing everything to save on training time can leave you working around equipment limitations on your most specialized jobs.

We’ve also seen shops swap lift types between locations as their fleet grows — pulling a scissor alignment rack out of one bay, installing a new 4-post, then reshuffling equipment across two locations entirely. It’s more logistics to manage, but purpose-fitting each bay pays off in fewer awkward workarounds during the jobs that matter most to your specialty.
