A 2 post car lift is the single most misunderstood piece of equipment we sell when it comes to electrical requirements, and nowhere do we hear more bad information than from shop owners branching into EV work along the Iowa-Missouri border. We’ve had more than one conversation start with “the last guy told us it just plugs into a regular outlet” right before we explain why that’s going to trip a breaker the first time someone raises a full-size pickup with a driveline in the air. Myth: A 2 Post Car Lift Runs on Standard 110-Volt Household Power

This is the one that trips up new shop owners the most. Most 2 post car lift models in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range that we install are built around a 220-volt single phase motor, not a standard household circuit. We’ve had calls from shops that assumed their existing wall outlet would handle it, only to find out the breaker panel needs a dedicated run pulled by a licensed electrician before the lift ever gets bolted down. If you’re setting up a dedicated EV bay for exhaust and driveline access, this matters even more because you’re often adding battery service equipment and charging infrastructure to the same panel.

We tell every customer the same thing before we quote installation: check your panel capacity first. A shop near the Iowa-Missouri border that’s converting an old detail bay into an EV service bay may have a panel that was never sized for a lift motor plus a charger plus shop lighting. Get an electrician to confirm available amperage before you commit to a specific model, because moving a dedicated circuit after concrete work and anchor bolts are in is a lot more expensive than doing it up front.

Myth: Single Phase and Three Phase Don’t Matter for a 2 Post Car Lift

Phase confusion is real, and it costs people money. Most of the two post units we sell for independent shops and dealerships run on single phase power, which is what almost every rural and small-town Iowa building already has coming in. But some higher-capacity industrial lifts, and certain heavy-duty configurations aimed at commercial trucks and EV platforms with underbody battery packs, spec out as three phase. If your building only has single phase service, ordering a three phase unit means either a costly phase converter or a call to the utility company that can take weeks.

We ask about phase availability on nearly every quote we send, because guessing wrong here is one of the most expensive mistakes a shop can make. An EV specialty shop doing exhaust and driveline access work doesn’t necessarily need the biggest industrial lift on the market, so matching the model to what your building can actually supply, rather than the highest capacity number on a spec sheet, is usually the smarter move.

Myth: Any Outlet Location Works as Long as It’s Close

Where the power drop lands relative to the lift’s control box matters more than most people expect. A 2 post car lift’s power unit is typically mounted on one column, and running a long extension or undersized cord from a distant outlet is both a code violation and a real safety risk when you’re lifting a vehicle with a driveline hanging in service position. We’ve walked into bays where a previous installer ran flexible cord along the floor to save on electrician costs, and it’s exactly the kind of shortcut that fails an inspection or, worse, fails during a lift cycle.

For a bay dedicated to exhaust and driveline work, plan the power drop location before the lift arrives, not after. We coordinate with electricians on install day so the conduit run is planned around where the power column will actually sit, factoring in clearance for the vehicle overhang and any battery service cart you’ll be rolling underneath.

Myth: EV Weight and Balance Don’t Change Your Electrical Planning

EVs are heavier than comparable gas vehicles and carry that weight low and often off-center compared to a traditional driveline layout. That doesn’t change the voltage a 2 post car lift needs, but it does change which model capacity makes sense, and capacity affects motor size, which affects the circuit an electrician needs to run. A shop lifting mixed EV and gas trucks for driveline and exhaust access should be sizing the lift for the heaviest vehicle on the schedule, not the average one, and that decision happens before the electrical rough-in.

We’ve seen shops undersize a lift to save money up front, then need a bigger circuit and a new motor a year later when they add EV pickups to their customer base. Talk through your realistic vehicle mix with whoever quotes your lift so the electrical work matches the equipment you’ll actually be running in three years, not just this one.

Myth: Bay Size Has Nothing to Do With Electrical Planning

It does, indirectly. Minimum bay requirements for a single two post rotary lift generally run around 12 feet by 24 feet with a 12 foot ceiling, and if you’re placing units side by side for a two-bay EV and exhaust setup, that adds up fast across a shop floor. The panel and conduit routing has to account for multiple lift circuits plus lighting plus any charging equipment, and cramming that into a tight remodel often means running conduit overhead or through a mezzanine, which changes your electrician’s quote.

We always ask for rough dimensions and photos of the intended bay before finalizing a quote, because it changes both the lift model recommendation and the electrical scope. A shop near the border trying to fit two lifts into a converted detail bay needs that conversation early, not as a surprise change order mid-install.

Myth: You Can Skip the Concrete and Electrical Conversation Until Install Day

We get calls where a shop has already scheduled an install date and assumes the electrical and concrete work will just get sorted out on site. It doesn’t work that way with a 2 post car lift. Anchor bolts need adequate concrete depth and cure time, and the power drop needs to be roughed in before our crew arrives, or the whole install gets pushed. We ask up front whether there’s a forklift on site to handle freight, whether the concrete is rated for anchoring, and whether power is already run to the bay, because any one of those being wrong adds a return trip.

For EV-focused shops specifically, we also ask about clearance for battery removal equipment and whether a pit or ground-level clearance is needed for anything beyond the lift itself. Getting these questions answered during the quote phase, not on install day, is what keeps a project on schedule.

Myth: Warranty and Service Calls Don’t Involve Electrical Troubleshooting

A surprising number of service calls we get on two post units turn out to be electrical, not mechanical. A motor that quits, a control button that stops responding, or a lift that has power but won’t cycle is often a wiring or breaker issue rather than a failed hydraulic component. We’ve talked shop owners through checking a tripped breaker before scheduling a costly service visit, and it solves the problem more often than you’d think.

When we quote installation on a 2 post car lift for an EV or driveline-focused bay, we walk through what a proper circuit, breaker size, and disconnect setup looks like so it’s less likely to become a service call six months down the road. Good electrical planning up front is genuinely the cheapest insurance you can buy for this equipment.
