Pulling a CV axle or half-shaft isn’t like swapping brake pads. You need full wheel droop, sometimes with the control arm hanging free, and you need the tech’s hands at a comfortable working height for a job that can involve a slide hammer, a puller, and a fair amount of leverage. A 2 post car lift with a low pad height and generous arm reach gives you that access from underneath and from the side, which is exactly why so many drivetrain-heavy shops stick with two-post over four-post drive-on ramps for this kind of work.

The arm geometry matters more here than raw capacity. On most 10,000 lb 2 post car lift models, front arms extend out around 20 to 44 inches and rear arms around 27 to 47 inches, which gives enough reach to clear a control arm without the tech straddling a post. Real Dimensions: What to Check Before You Order

Every central Iowa garage we work with has a ceiling height, a column spacing limit, or a floor thickness question, so let’s get specific. A typical 10k 2 post car lift runs about 133 to 141 inches overall height, which matters if you’re in an older building with 12-foot ceilings and HVAC ductwork running low. Column spacing (the width between the two posts) usually falls between 100 and 136 inches depending on the model, and you need drive-through clearance — the distance between the columns at the base — to comfortably fit your widest customer vehicle, whether that’s a work truck or a dually.

We tell every shop the same thing: measure twice before you order once. A CL10 or X10-class two-post lift needs a slab that’s typically 4 inches thick minimum, poured with rebar reinforcement, and free of major cracks near the anchor points. If your shop’s slab was poured decades ago for lighter equipment, we run a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection before install. We’ve walked into more than one central Iowa garage where the floor looked fine until we got under it with a flashlight and found the original pour was thinner than code called for near the bay doors.

A two-post lift lifts by the frame or pinch welds, leaving the entire underside — wheels, control arms, axles — completely open and hanging free.

That said, we’ve installed plenty of four-post lifts in shops that split their work between alignments and general repair, and those shops usually keep a two-post bay dedicated to drivetrain and suspension jobs. If your family garage does a healthy mix of CV axle replacements, wheel bearing jobs, and strut work, a two-post is going to earn its floor space faster than almost any other single piece of equipment you own. It’s also generally less expensive to install than an in-ground alternative and takes up a smaller footprint than a four-post runway setup.

Sizing Capacity for What Actually Comes Through the Door

Central Iowa shops see everything from compact sedans to three-quarter-ton pickups, and undersizing your lift capacity is one of the most common mistakes we see family garages make when they’re trying to save money upfront. A 9,000 lb two-post is fine for a shop that’s strictly cars and light SUVs, but if you’re pulling CV axles on full-size trucks or occasionally lifting a loaded work van, you want to step up to a 10,000 or 12,000 lb rated 2 post car lift. Remember that weight distribution matters as much as total capacity — a service truck can carry 7,000 lbs on the rear axle alone, which will chew through undersized rear arm components fast.
