The hardest part of buying a 2 post car lift is not picking the model — it is getting 1,800 pounds of steel off a 53-foot trailer and into your building without damaging the equipment, the driveway, or somebody’s back. We learned this the hard way over a lot of deliveries, and the conversation we had with a third-generation family garage in Davenport is the one we now repeat to every buyer. They had been running the same two bays since the current owner’s grandfather opened the doors, they were adding a third bay for seasonal storage and service work, and they nearly got wrecked by freight logistics before a single anchor bolt went into the floor.

What Actually Shows Up on the Truck
A typical 10,000 lb clearfloor two-post ships as three to four pieces. The two columns are the heavy items, generally crated or banded together and running 400 to 550 pounds each depending on capacity and column height. The overhead beam assembly with the shutoff bar is long and awkward but comparatively light, often 120 to 200 pounds. Then there is a pallet or box with four arms, the power unit, hydraulic hoses, cables, anchor bolts, arm restraint hardware, and the manual. Total shipping weight for a 10,000 lb unit lands between 1,600 and 2,000 pounds. Step up to a 12,000 or 15,000 lb model and you are looking at 2,200 to 2,900 pounds.
Dimensions matter as much as weight. Columns on a standard-height clearfloor unit are roughly 11 feet 6 inches to 12 feet long as shipped. Tall-column versions push past 13 feet. Arms crate at around 5 to 6 feet. That column length is why a pickup and a couple of buddies is not a plan — you cannot balance a twelve-foot, 500-pound steel column on a tailgate. The Davenport shop assumed the whole thing would come on a single skid they could roll. It came as loose banded bundles on a flatbed, and the driver was on a schedule. Knowing the actual piece count and dimensions before the truck arrives is the difference between a 20-minute unload and a two-hour panic.
Liftgate, Forklift, or Dock: Pick One Before You Order
There are exactly three ways this equipment comes off a trailer, and you have to commit to one at the time you place the order. A loading dock is easiest — the trailer backs in, you pull the pieces off with a pallet jack, done. Most independent garages do not have a dock. Second option is your own forklift or skid steer with forks. If you have one, tell us, because it usually saves you a freight surcharge and it is the fastest unload of the three. We have had customers with a 5,000 lb forklift pull a full two-post off in ten minutes.
Third is liftgate service, which you order and pay for as an accessory on the freight bill. A liftgate truck lowers pieces to ground level, and then they are your problem — you still need to move a 500-pound column across a parking lot. Liftgate trucks are also usually 26-foot straight trucks rather than 53-foot trailers, which is actually an advantage on tight residential and older commercial streets. The Davenport shop is on a narrow street with parked cars on both sides and a 90-degree turn into the alley. A 53-foot trailer would not have made it. We rerouted to a liftgate straight truck and staged the pieces in the alley, then walked them in with a pallet jack and an engine hoist. The Real Dimensions of the Third Bay
Here is what we measured in that building, because generic spec sheets do not tell you whether a lift fits your room. The new bay was 14 feet 2 inches wide between a block wall on one side and a structural post on the other. Ceiling was 12 feet 8 inches to the bottom of the joists, with a sprinkler line running at 12 feet 1 inch that could not be moved. Slab was original from a 1978 pour, and a core sample came back at 5.5 inches of what looked like decent aggregate, no rebar visible in the core.
Those numbers drove every decision. A standard clearfloor overhead assembly on a 10,000 lb unit sits right around 12 feet, which cleared the joists but not the sprinkler with the margin we wanted. So we went baseplate. A baseplate model runs the hydraulic and equalization lines through a low floor plate between the columns instead of overhead, which means your only height limit is the column itself — usually under 10 feet. The tradeoff is that low plate on the floor, which you drive over. It is about a half-inch tall with a ramped profile, and on a low-clearance sports car it is worth noting, but for a general repair shop working on trucks and daily drivers it is a non-issue. Column spacing came out to 11 feet 2 inches inside-to-inside, leaving 18 inches of working room on each side. Tight but workable.
Concrete: What a 1978 Slab Can and Cannot Do
Manufacturer minimums for most 10,000 lb two-post units are 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, unreinforced, cured a minimum of 28 days. Higher-capacity units go to 6 inches or more. Those are minimums, not targets. On an older slab you have three additional questions the spec sheet does not ask: how good is the aggregate, is there a control joint or crack within the anchor pattern, and what is under it.
That last one gets people. A slab poured over poorly compacted fill can be six inches thick and still fail, because the concrete is not the load path — the soil under it is. When a column tries to tip under load, the anchors pull tension and the slab has to resist it in bending. If there is a void underneath, the slab cracks and the column moves. We check this by tapping across the anchor footprint and listening for hollow spots, and by looking at how the existing floor has cracked over 45 years. This slab was solid. What it did have was a control joint running diagonally three feet from where the driver-side column wanted to go, so we shifted the entire bay layout 16 inches toward the wall to keep all four anchors in a monolithic section. Never place an anchor within the manufacturer’s minimum edge distance of a crack, joint, or slab edge — typically 6 inches, sometimes more. When a slab genuinely will not work, the fix is a saw-cut and pour of two footing pads, which is a day of work and a lot cheaper than a lift that walks out of the floor.
Moving Steel Once It Is on the Ground
Getting the pieces from the alley into bay three took two people and three tools: a 5,500 lb pallet jack, a two-ton engine hoist, and a set of pipe rollers. For a column, the technique is to keep it horizontal on rollers or a pallet jack until it is inside the bay, then stand it with the engine hoist rigged to the top. Standing a column by hand is how people get crushed. Do not do it.
If you are doing your own unload with a forklift, use forks long enough to fully support the bundle and strap it before you lift — banded columns will roll off forks. Set them down on wood dunnage, not directly on concrete, so you can get straps back under them. The power unit and hardware boxes are two-person carries at most and can go straight to a bench. Keep the hardware box sealed until the installer opens it; anchor bolts, cable ends, and arm restraint pins have a way of migrating in a busy shop, and a missing bag of hardware turns a one-day install into a two-week wait. On this job the shop wanted to unload the night before install to save time, and we agreed on the condition that everything stayed staged in the bay and nobody opened boxes. That worked. Seasonal Storage, Bay Rotation, and Why Two Posts Won
Part of the reason this shop wanted a 2 post car lift rather than another four-post was their winter business. Along the Mississippi corridor there is real money in seasonal storage — convertibles, collector cars, motorcycles on stands — and a lot of those vehicles come in during October for a service before they get parked. That is fluid changes, brake inspection, tire rotation, fuel stabilizer, battery tender. All of it is service work, and service work happens faster on a two-post with the wheels hanging free.
Storage itself does not need a lift at all in their layout; they park vehicles nose-to-tail in a separate insulated room. What they needed was throughput in October and April, the two months when everything comes in and goes back out at once. A third bay with open floor access, running fifteen to twenty vehicles a week through a quick service, paid for the equipment in under two seasons by their math. A four-post in that bay would have doubled the time per vehicle on wheel-off work. This is the calculus we walk through with every family shop that calls us: what are you actually doing in the bay, and how often. If the answer is wheels-off service, the answer is two posts. If it is alignment or long-term parking, we will point you a different direction and we will say so.
Budgeting the Whole Project, Not Just the Lift
The number people fixate on is the sticker price of the equipment, and it is usually 60 to 75 percent of what the project actually costs. Freight on a 2 post car lift to an Iowa or Illinois address typically runs several hundred dollars, more with liftgate service and more again for a residential or limited-access delivery. Professional installation is another line item and is worth every dollar on a commercial unit where a warranty claim will ask who set it. Electrical is the sleeper cost — most of these power units want a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit, and if your panel is full or the bay is 80 feet from the panel, an electrician’s bill can rival the freight.
Then there is site prep. Core sampling is cheap. Footing pads, if you need them, are not. Removing an old lift, patching anchor holes, or grinding a high spot in the slab all add up.
