Rural farm shops around Cedar Rapids installing a 2 post car lift for restoration and metal work almost always ask the same question, in the same order: what do I do first? Most guides answer that question by starting with the lift model. That is the wrong place to start. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, and this article is the pre-purchase checklist we walk farm-shop owners through — in the exact order the work has to happen, because doing it out of sequence costs real money. If you are pouring a new slab, framing a new pole barn, or converting an old machine shed, this is the order of operations.
We install into rural pole barns and machine sheds across eastern Iowa every month. Sequence the build-out right and the lift is the easiest part.
Step One: Decide the Vehicle Mix Before You Break Ground
Before any concrete gets poured, know what you are actually going to lift. A Cedar Rapids farm-shop owner doing restoration and metal work on classic pickups has different requirements than one doing crossover maintenance. Truck restoration usually needs 12K capacity because heavier fully-restored show trucks can push 6,500 lb curb weight and you want capacity headroom. Passenger-car restoration is fine on 10K. Metal work — cutting, welding, panel replacement — needs enough working height that the tech is not bent over for eight hours, which pushes toward taller lifts and higher ceilings.
Every downstream decision — slab thickness, ceiling height, column placement, electrical service — flows from the vehicle mix. Get this wrong and you will either overspend on a 12K lift you never need or hit capacity ceiling on year-three projects and end up buying a second lift. The vehicle-mix decision is worth writing down and pinning to the shop wall before the first ground is broken. Everything else is downstream of this choice.
Step Two: Pour the Slab for the Lift You Will Buy
A 2 post car lift requires a specific slab thickness and strength. The typical spec is 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum for a 10K, and 5 inches for a 12K under the columns. If you are pouring new slab for a farm-shop build, spec 5 inches uniformly for a 10K install and 6 inches under the column locations for a 12K install. That is a small amount of additional concrete for a very large amount of long-term structural margin.
Reinforcement matters too. Use 5/8-inch rebar in a 12-inch on-center grid, not just wire mesh. Rebar transfers load across the slab in a way mesh cannot. On a farm-shop build in Cedar Rapids where winter frost heave is a real factor, we also recommend a proper vapor barrier and at least 4 inches of compacted gravel base below the slab. Skimping on any of those layers now shows up ten years later as micro-cracking around anchor holes, which becomes an anchor-reset job. Do the slab right the first time.
Step Three: Frame or Modify the Building for Ceiling Clearance
Ceiling clearance is a hard constraint for a 2 post car lift. If you want an overhead configuration, plan for 14 feet minimum from finished floor to the lowest permanent obstruction. If you are stuck with a lower ceiling, plan for a baseplate configuration and know that your effective working height will be limited by the ceiling itself. On a new pole-barn farm shop, 14 feet of clear ceiling is trivially achievable and worth planning for even if you think you might not need it.
Watch for the details: the ceiling number is not the peak of the truss. It is the lowest point of the lowest permanent fixture in the working zone. Overhead lighting, HVAC ducts, structural cross-braces, and garage-door tracks all reduce effective ceiling. On a Cedar Rapids farm-shop build, we typically ask for 15 feet peak ceiling with lighting and utilities routed to keep the working zone at 14 feet clear minimum. Framing this in from day one is far cheaper than moving a lighting run five years later.
Step Four: Run Electrical Before the Lift Arrives
Every 10K and 12K 2 post car lift on the US market needs 220V single-phase power, typically a 30-amp circuit dedicated to the lift’s power unit. That circuit needs to terminate near the column position where the power unit will sit — driver-side or passenger-side depending on the model. Get the lift model committed before running electrical, so the electrician knows which side to run to. Or run to a junction box in the ceiling that can extend to either side once the model is chosen.
Farm shops in Cedar Rapids often have adequate 220V service to a compressor or a welder already, but the run to the lift location has to be planned and permitted separately. Budget $400 to $800 for the electrical work depending on distance from the panel and local code requirements. Do this before the lift is delivered — trying to work around a lift on the floor while running conduit is dramatically more expensive than doing it in an empty bay. Sequencing matters.
Step Five: Choose the Configuration Based on Ceiling and Workload
Now you can pick the 2 post car lift configuration. For a Cedar Rapids farm-shop build with a properly sequenced 14-foot ceiling and a 5-inch slab, our default recommendation is a 10,000 lb symmetric overhead ALI Gold. That handles almost every restoration project a rural shop takes on, gives even arm reach for classic-truck frame-rail pickup points, and lets the auto-shutoff bar do the safety work when a taller vehicle sits on the lift.
Step up to 12K if the vehicle mix from step one included regular heavy trucks — one-tons, three-quarter tons with camper bodies, class-3 chassis-cabs. Step down to a smaller-capacity or scissor lift only if the ceiling somehow ended up under 12 feet despite the build-out plan. Every farm-shop build-out we quote lands on either 10K overhead or 12K overhead, because if you did the sequencing right, the ceiling is never the limiting factor. That is the payoff for planning in the correct order.
Step Six: Plan the Bay Layout Around the Lift, Not Vice Versa
Once the 2 post car lift model and columns are committed, everything else in the shop gets laid out around it. Tool boxes go on the driver side of the working position. Welder and grinder gear goes on the passenger side, close to the working zone but not in the walk path. Compressor sits well away from the lift, ideally in an insulated corner where the noise is dampened. Air lines drop from the ceiling to the working position, not near the compressor.
Metal-work restoration specifically needs good ventilation and a way to catch grinding sparks and welding smoke. Farm shops often skip this and pay for it with the ventilation retrofit after the first winter of closed-up welding sessions. Plan the vent fan location, the fresh-air intake, and the grinding-station bench during the layout phase — not after the lift is installed and you have to work around it. Every hour spent on layout before install saves five hours of retrofitting later.
Step Seven: Schedule the Install and Line Up the Follow-Through
With the slab cured, the ceiling framed, and the electrical roughed in, the actual 2 post car lift install is the easy part. We typically do a farm-shop install in a single day: drill anchors, plumb columns, run hydraulic hoses, test the lock cycle, and do the first vehicle raise before we leave. The customer is doing paid restoration work on the lift the following day. That is what a properly sequenced build-out gets you.
What is often missed is the follow-through: a first-year check at six or twelve months to re-tension cables and reset any anchor washers that took a beating during break-in, and a scheduled maintenance cadence going forward.
