Why Farm Shop Slabs Are a Different Animal
A lot of farm shops in the Dubuque area were built for tractors, grain trucks, and welding tables, not for a 2 post car lift carrying a frame-off restoration project a few feet off the ground with all the weight riding on four anchor points. Those slabs are often poured thick in the middle bay where equipment parks, then tapered thinner toward the walls or doorways where nobody expected a hoist to ever sit. We’ve walked into shops where the owner assumed the whole floor was uniform, only to find six inches in the center and barely four near the overhead door.
This matters because a 2 post car lift doesn’t spread its load evenly across the slab the way a flat parked vehicle does. All the stress concentrates at the base plates, and if the concrete under those plates is thin, cracked, or sitting on fill dirt instead of compacted base, anchors will pull loose under load. We’ve seen it happen with older lifts that were installed without anyone checking the pour first. For restoration and metal work especially, where a car might sit lifted for days or weeks while you’re grinding, welding, and swapping panels, that base needs to hold steady the entire time, not just for a quick oil change.
Slab Thickness: The Number That Actually Matters
Most 2 post car lift manufacturers, including the Rotary and Challenger equipment we install, specify a minimum slab thickness for their anchor bolt pattern, typically in the four to four and a half inch range for a properly cured pour. That’s the floor, not the target. In a farm shop doing restoration work with a lift that might stay loaded for extended periods, we’d rather see five to six inches of solid concrete under the columns. One customer up in the Jewell area we quoted had five to six inch slab depth with rebar reinforcement already in place, and that’s exactly the kind of setup that makes an installer’s job easy and the lift owner’s life worry-free.
Thickness alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Concrete that’s cracked, spalling, or has been patched over the years won’t hold anchors even if it’s technically deep enough. We ask every customer about the age of their pour, whether they’ve seen cracking near where the lift will sit, and whether the shop floor has ever had water intrusion or heaving from frost. Farm country freeze-thaw cycles are hard on concrete, and a slab that looked fine five years ago might have hairline cracks working their way through it now. A core sample or even a simple visual inspection before you order a lift saves you from anchors that won’t torque properly on install day.
Rebar: Helpful, Sometimes Complicated
Rebar reinforced slabs are common in farm shops because they’re built to handle heavy equipment and vibration, and reinforcement is generally a good sign for a 2 post car lift installation. It adds tensile strength that helps prevent cracking under the concentrated load of the lift columns. But rebar changes how we approach anchoring. If we hit rebar while drilling for anchor bolts, we can’t just push through it, and we can’t always shift the lift footprint far enough to dodge it in a tight bay.
This is why a pre-purchase visit or at least a detailed conversation about your slab matters so much. We ask customers whether they know if their pour was reinforced and, if so, roughly how the rebar grid was laid out. Sometimes a small adjustment in lift placement, even a few inches, avoids the rebar entirely. Other times we relocate anchor points within the base plate’s tolerance or use anchors rated for reinforced concrete. What we don’t want is a crew showing up on install day, hitting rebar on the first hole, and improvising a solution while the customer is standing there watching the clock. Telling us upfront that your farm shop has a heavily reinforced pour, even if you’re not sure of the exact spacing, lets us plan the job properly before we ever load the lift on the truck.
Ceiling Height for Restoration Work
Restoration and metal work often means bodies off frames, engines out, and cars sitting lifted for longer stretches than a typical service bay would ever see. That changes the ceiling height math. A 2 post car lift needs enough overhead room not just for the vehicle at full rise, but for whatever you’re hoisting above it, whether that’s an engine hoist, a cherry picker, or overhead lighting you’ve rigged up over the years. We’ve quoted farm shops with twelve foot ceilings that work fine for most lifts, but if you’re planning to run a full size truck at full rise with a hoist above it, you want to measure twice before ordering.
We always ask about ceiling height early in the conversation, along with any obstructions like ductwork, lighting, or old grain bin equipment left hanging from the trusses. Farm shops accumulate decades of overhead clutter, and it’s not unusual to find an old engine hoist or pulley system still bolted to the rafters from a previous era of the building’s life. That stuff either needs to come down or be accounted for in the lift’s rise clearance. Better to catch it during the estimate than during the install.
New Slab vs. Working With What You Have
Some farm shop owners ask whether it’s worth pouring a fresh pad specifically for a 2 post car lift rather than trying to make an older slab work. If your existing floor is thin, cracked, or you’re not confident in its history, a dedicated pad poured to spec with proper rebar and cure time is the more permanent answer. It costs more upfront in time and materials, but it eliminates the guesswork on anchor holding power for the life of the lift.
For most farm shops we work with, though, the existing slab is fine once we’ve actually inspected it. A lot of older Iowa farm buildings were overbuilt for the equipment of their era, and a six inch pour meant to hold a loaded grain truck will handle a two post hoist without issue. The key is not assuming either way. We’d rather spend fifteen minutes on the phone or an hour on site confirming your slab than have you order a lift that sits in a crate because the concrete underneath isn’t ready for it.
Bolted vs. Mobile Options for Farm Shops
Not every farm shop situation calls for a permanently bolted 2 post car lift. If you’re renting the property, plan to move buildings, or your slab genuinely can’t support anchors without a new pour, there are alternatives worth discussing, including mobile column lifts that don’t rely on the same fixed anchor bolt pattern. For dedicated restoration and metal work, though, a bolted two post generally gives you the most stable platform and the widest range of lift arm configurations for getting under trucks, tractors, and project cars.

If your slab is solid and you’re staying in the building long term, bolted is almost always the better long-term investment because it’s more rigid under load and typically less expensive per pound of lifting capacity. If your situation is more temporary or your concrete is questionable and you don’t want to repour right now, we’ll steer you toward equipment that fits your actual floor instead of forcing a lift onto a slab that isn’t ready.
What to Have Ready Before You Call Us
