A farm shop owner in east-central Iowa called us in February about a 2 post car lift for a machine shed he had just insulated. He was not running a repair business — he maintained a grain truck, two pickups, a couple of family cars, and he wanted to start doing his own alignments instead of hauling everything forty minutes to town. That combination, hobby-scale volume with real alignment ambitions, changes the buying checklist in ways a generic spec sheet will not tell you. Alignment work demands a level, rigid platform and turnplate access. Farm sheds bring their own problems: unknown slab, drifting ceiling height, and a floor drain exactly where you wanted a column. Here is the checklist we walk rural buyers through before anybody spends a dollar.

Step one: measure the ceiling twice, then measure the door
Ceiling height is the first thing that kills a purchase, and farm buildings are the worst offenders because the height is not one number. A pole shed might be sixteen feet at the peak and eleven feet at the sidewall, with purlins, a light fixture, or a bar joist crossing exactly where the overhead beam wants to go. We ask for the clear height at the actual column locations, measured to the lowest obstruction, not the peak.
If you have twelve feet or more of true clear height, a clearfloor overhead-beam model is usually the better choice — nothing on the floor to trip over, no baseplate to route hoses through, and a cleaner sweep for a floor jack or a creeper. Under twelve feet, or under any circumstance where a beam would interfere, you go baseplate: the hoses and equalizer cables run in a low channel across the floor between the columns. We have had buyers with a hard 139-inch maximum height who had no choice at all, and baseplate served them perfectly well. Second measurement: the overhead door. A sixteen-foot-wide door is fine; a ten-foot-wide door with a 2 post car lift set for wide drive-thru may mean you cannot get a truck in straight. Also check garage door track and opener rails — on a low ceiling those often sit lower than the ceiling itself.
Step two: prove your concrete before you order anything
Rural slabs are a coin flip. We have seen eight-inch reinforced pours in newer machine sheds and three-inch skim coats over gravel in buildings that got “concreted” one weekend in 1978. A 10,000 lb two-post typically requires four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured, with anchors set away from control joints and slab edges by the manufacturer’s stated distance.
Do not guess. Drill a test hole at each planned column location with a half-inch masonry bit and measure depth, or pull a small core. Note whether you hit rebar, mesh, or nothing but sand. If the slab is thin, the fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad under each column — typically a four-foot square at adequate depth, tied in and fully cured before anchoring. That is a real expense and a multi-week delay, but it is far cheaper than an anchor pulling out with a truck at height. One farm buyer we worked with had six to eight inches of good concrete and was ready to anchor the same week. Another was certain he had five inches, drilled, and found three and a half. Knowing which one you are before you commit is the entire point of this step. Also check for radiant floor heat tubing, which is increasingly common in insulated Iowa shops and turns a drill bit into a plumbing repair.
Step three: capacity, and the temptation to buy too big
Farm shops overestimate capacity constantly, and we understand why — you are used to equipment that weighs a lot. But a 2 post car lift is rated for what the arms and columns can hold at the pad points, and a grain truck or a loaded dually is not a two-post job regardless of the number on the sticker.
Be honest about your heaviest actual vehicle. If it is a three-quarter-ton pickup at 7,500 to 8,500 lb, a 10,000 lb unit is right and gives real margin. If your heaviest is a half-ton and some sedans — one buyer told us his heaviest was under three tons — 9,000 or 10,000 lb is plenty and the money is better spent on quality and arm configuration than on capacity you will never use. Where 12,000 to 15,000 lb makes sense is if you genuinely lift one-ton service trucks, long-bed duallies, or a cab-and-chassis with a bed. Remember that capacity is not the only limit: arm reach, pad height, and drive-thru width all matter. A tall four-wheel-drive pickup needs a low minimum pad height with adequate screw-pad extension, and a long wheelbase needs arms that actually reach the frame pinch points. We size for the vehicle, not the vanity number.
Step four: what alignment work actually requires
Doing alignments on a two-post is possible but constrained, and this is where we redirect a lot of farm buyers. True alignment work wants slip plates at the rear and turnplates at the front, plus a rigid, repeatable, level platform. That is a four-post alignment rack or an alignment-specific scissor with a rolling jack — not a general-purpose 2 post car lift.
What a two-post does well is toe-and-go work: setting toe on a farm truck, checking and correcting camber where the design allows adjustment, and swapping worn tie rods, ball joints, and control arm bushings that caused the alignment problem in the first place. With a good string setup or a modern camber-caster gauge, plenty of capable people get very acceptable results. What you cannot easily do is a full four-wheel thrust-angle alignment with loaded suspension, because the wheels hang free. If alignment is the primary mission, tell us up front and we will price you a rack instead. If it is one job among many — brakes, exhaust, oil, suspension, tires — then a two-post is the right general-purpose machine and you send the occasional critical alignment to town. Step five: hydraulic cylinders, seals, and rebuild kits
Here is the part nobody asks about at purchase time and everybody asks about in year eight. The hydraulic cylinder is the heart of the lift, and the failure mode is almost never the cylinder body — it is the seals. A cylinder that weeps down the barrel, or a lift that drifts down overnight, is usually a rod seal, wiper, or piston seal problem, and the repair is a rebuild kit and a couple of hours.
We get calls that sound alarming and turn out simple. Someone reported a Challenger two-post where the motor ran, fluid was full, and nothing lifted — no external leak at all. That is a classic internal bypass: the piston seal has failed and fluid is going around the piston instead of pushing it. New cylinder? Usually not. Seal kit, hone the bore if needed, reassemble, bleed, back in service. In farm shops we see accelerated seal wear from two things: dust and dirt on the exposed rod scoring the wiper, and water in old hydraulic fluid from condensation cycling through Iowa winters. Wipe the rod, keep a cover on the power unit, and change the fluid on schedule. Also mind the cylinder rams if you have a dual-cylinder design — replacing one seal set and not the other means you will be back under there next season. Step six: power, air, and the stuff you forget
Farm shops usually have power, but not always the right power in the right place. Most single-phase two-post power units want 220V on a dedicated 30-amp circuit. If your shed panel is fed by a long underground run already loaded up with a welder, a compressor, and a grain dryer, get an electrician to look at it before you order. Voltage drop makes a motor run hot and slow, and it shortens contactor life fast.
Clearfloor overhead models also need shop air to release the safety latches. If your compressor is in the house or the other end of the shed, plan a drop near the columns during install rather than after. Baseplate models often use mechanical or cable-actuated releases, which is one fewer utility to run — a genuine advantage in a shed with no air line. Beyond utilities, think about the small things: adequate lighting overhead, a place to put arm restraint stops so they do not get buried in the shop clutter, floor drainage away from anchor locations, and whether you will want a rolling jack. Getting a crated 2 post car lift off the truck matters too — a tractor with a loader or a skid steer with forks handles it; a bare gravel driveway with no equipment means paying for liftgate service. Step seven: buy for parts availability, not just price
The last item on the checklist is the one that pays off longest. Every lift eventually needs something — a cable, a latch pawl, an arm restraint gear, a seal kit, a power unit motor. What separates a good ten-year purchase from a bad one is whether that part exists on a shelf in North America when you need it.

Ask before you buy: who sells the seal kit, who sells the cable set, is there a serial-number lookup, and is there a phone number that a human answers. We do that lookup for people constantly, including for lifts we did not sell.
