Measure Your Ceiling Before You Even Call Us
The number one reason a 2 post car lift install gets delayed on a farm property is ceiling height nobody actually measured. Old machine sheds and pole barns often have trusses, purlins, or a hay door lower than the eave line suggests, and a 9,000 or 10,000 lb lift with the arms up and a pickup on it needs real clearance above the columns. We ask for a rise measurement from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction directly above where the lift will sit, not just the wall height, because that’s what actually matters for an overhead-style unit.
This is where a lot of farm shop owners get surprised. A building that looks plenty tall from the driveway can have a header beam or a light fixture right where the crossbar needs to travel. We’ve had customers call us thinking they need a shorter lift when really they just need to relocate it eight feet over, away from a truss. Before you buy anything, grab a tape measure or a laser and get us real numbers. It saves everyone a wasted trip and a lift that gets ordered wrong the first time.
Overhead vs Baseplate: Which One Actually Fits a Farm Building
This is the core decision on a 2 post car lift for a shop like yours, and it comes down to what’s above your head versus what’s under your feet. An overhead configuration runs the crossbar up top, out of the way, which is great if you’re lifting tall trucks or work vans and don’t want to duck under a bar every time you walk through. But it needs clearance, and in a lot of older ag buildings with lower trusses, that clearance just isn’t there without cutting into the roof structure, which nobody wants to do.
A baseplate configuration ties the two columns together along the floor instead of overhead, which means it doesn’t care how low your ceiling is, but it does mean there’s a bar running across the floor between the posts that you’ll be driving over and stepping over constantly. For a lot of the farm shops we’ve been into out this way, with 12 to 14 foot ceilings and trusses that dip lower than people expect, baseplate ends up being the practical call even though overhead gets talked about more. Concrete Has to Be Right, No Exceptions
We can’t anchor a 2 post car lift into cracked, thin, or unrated concrete and expect it to hold, and this comes up constantly in older farm buildings where the slab was poured decades ago for tractors and equipment, not for anchor bolts holding a truck twelve feet in the air. We ask for slab thickness and cure time before we ever schedule a crew, because if the pad isn’t rated for it, the fix has to happen before install day, not during it.
If you’re building new or repouring a section for the lift, tell us before the concrete goes down. We can give you the pad specs so it’s done right the first time instead of you finding out after the fact that a truck full of ready-mix has to come back out. Daily maintenance on a farm means pickups, sometimes a service truck, occasionally a tractor attachment or a stock trailer axle job, and that’s a very different load profile than a passenger car shop in town. Drive-On Clearance and Bay Width
Farm shop bays are often wider than a typical in-town service bay, but they’re also full of tool chests, welders, and parked equipment that eats into usable width fast. Before ordering a 2 post car lift, walk off the actual clear space between the columns you’re planning on, not just the bay width on paper, and make sure a full-size crew cab dually can open its doors on both sides once it’s between the posts. Column spacing that works fine for a sedan can be tight for a heavy-duty truck with dual doors and mirrors.
We also ask about approach: is there a step up into the bay, a floor drain in the way, or a support post from the building itself sitting right where the lift needs to go. These are the kind of details that don’t show up in a phone quote but absolutely show up on install day if we don’t ask ahead of time.
Power, Air, and What the Install Crew Needs On Site
Most farm shops already run 220V single phase for welders and compressors, which works fine for a 2 post car lift power unit, but we still confirm voltage and circuit availability before we show up so nobody’s standing around on install day waiting on an electrician. We also ask if there’s a forklift or skid steer on site, because unloading a lift off a trailer in a gravel yard is a lot easier with equipment already there than with our crew improvising.
If your shop doesn’t have a pit and never will, that’s fine, most farm installs are surface mount anyway. We just need honest answers on what’s actually available on the property so we can plan the crew and equipment correctly instead of guessing and losing half a day to logistics that could’ve been sorted with one phone call.
Annual Inspections Matter More Once It’s Your Equipment
Once a 2 post car lift is anchored and running daily in your shop, get it on an annual inspection schedule, especially on a working farm where the lift sees heavy trucks, hydraulic leaks, and dust that a town shop might not deal with as much. We check cables, hydraulic lines, anchor torque, and the locking mechanisms, and we tag the lift once it passes so you’ve got documentation if anyone ever asks, whether that’s an insurance question or just your own peace of mind after years of daily use.
