A rural farm shop north of Dubuque called us last fall about installing a 2 post car lift in a converted implement shed for restoration and metal-fabrication work on old trucks. The owner wanted to know what to check before he committed to a specific model, and honestly the checklist we walked him through is the same one we’d hand any farm shop in eastern Iowa — Dyersville, Manchester, Elkader, Bellevue, Cascade. Farm shops are different from town garages. The buildings are bigger, the concrete is older, the power is sometimes flakier, and the range of things you might lift is wider. This is the pre-purchase checklist.

Step one: know what you’re going to lift
Before you look at a single 2 post car lift model, list every vehicle you actually intend to service on it. On the Dubuque farm shop we worked with, the answer was a mix of 1950s and 1960s pickup trucks under restoration, one or two modern half-ton daily drivers, and occasionally a farm-use 3/4-ton with a service bed. That mix pushed us toward a 10,000-pound lift with generous arm reach and versa-symmetric arms — enough capacity for the heavy stuff, enough arm flexibility for the older trucks with non-standard pickup points.
Farm shops sometimes want to lift things a 2-post isn’t built for — a light tractor, a UTV, a compact loader. Be honest with yourself and with us about what will actually go on the lift. A 2 post car lift isn’t a farm-equipment lift; the arm geometry is designed for cars and light trucks with defined pickup points. If you also need to service tractors and skid steers, that’s a different piece of equipment (or a jack stand and a floor). Don’t over-spec a car lift to try to make it do farm-equipment work. It ends badly. We’ll tell you honestly what fits and what doesn’t.
Step two: measure the building — ceiling, door, column path
Farm shop buildings run big — 14 to 20 foot ceilings are common in pole barns and machine sheds. That’s plenty for any overhead-style 2 post car lift, and it’s often taller than a town garage can offer. Great for overhead, no compromise on lift height. The catch is that a converted implement shed might have trusses or purlins right where you want the top beam of the overhead 2-post to sit. Measure not just ceiling height but where any structural obstruction lives at the 12-to-14-foot mark.
Door height and door width matter for how you’ll get vehicles in and out with the lift installed. The columns of a 2 post car lift stand roughly 12 feet apart, and a car has to drive between them without touching. If your machine shed door is 12 feet wide, you’ll have inches of clearance on each side of the vehicle to align with the lift. Not a problem — just something to plan. And check the column-to-column drive path for any drainage grates, floor joints, or slab transitions. A little planning at measurement time saves rework at install time.
Step three: test the concrete before ordering
Farm shop concrete is where a lot of 2 post car lift projects stall out, and it’s the single most important item on this checklist. Concrete slabs in old machine sheds are often 4 inches or less, poured without documentation on PSI, sometimes with rebar and sometimes without. Concrete in newer purpose-built shops (post-2005 or so) is usually 5 to 6 inches at proper PSI and holds a lift without modification. Old concrete needs testing.
We core-test the slab at each column location before we quote a specific install price. Two 2-inch cores, 20 minutes total on-site, definitive answer on thickness and rough read on quality. On the Dubuque farm shop, the slab came back at 4 inches of decent-PSI concrete — right at the minimum for a 10K 2 post car lift. We anchored directly with epoxy-set bolts rather than mechanical wedges to get the pullout strength we wanted. If the slab had come back at 3 inches, we’d have poured pads under each column footprint. Testing first means no surprises on install day. Ordering a lift and then finding out the slab won’t hold it is the expensive way to do this.
Step four: rural power and the 220 versus 3-phase question
Most farm shops have single-phase 220V power, which is what home-garage 2 post car lift power units run on. Perfect fit. If you’re eyeing a commercial 2-post that requires 3-phase, that’s a bigger conversation — most rural buildings don’t have 3-phase and getting it run is not cheap. When we spec a lift for a farm shop we default to single-phase 220V models unless there’s a specific reason to go 3-phase, which for a farm shop there rarely is.
The one wrinkle we see is that farm shop electrical is sometimes older and the panel may not have a clean 220V circuit available for a new 20-amp draw. That’s a job for a rural electrician — usually a straightforward panel add. On the Dubuque install, the owner already had a welder circuit close to where we wanted the power unit; we ran a new dedicated 220V line from that same panel space and were live in an afternoon. Plan for the electrician to be on site before we arrive, or coordinate with us to schedule both trips. Trying to install a 2-post and add electrical the same day is a schedule fight nobody wins.
Step five: pick arms for restoration and metal work
Restoration and metal-fab work is where the arm spec on a farm shop 2 post car lift really earns its keep. Older trucks have non-standard pickup points — some frames are twisted, some have aftermarket brackets, some sit lower than modern vehicles because of leaf spring sag. You need enough arm articulation to catch clean structure regardless of what shape the vehicle is in. Double-telescoping screw pads and drop-end front arms are worth every dollar on a restoration lift.
Versa-symmetric arms are the other feature we push hard on for a farm-shop restoration application. Versa lets you run the lift symmetric (car centered between columns) or asymmetric (car rotated back for door clearance) depending on what you’re doing. On a body-off truck restoration, symmetric gives you the balanced load. On a cab-in-place transmission or wiring job, asymmetric opens the door path. Being able to configure the arms either way for a given project turns one lift into two workflows. For the Dubuque farm shop that’s building trucks over a year or two per project, versa arms were the right call.
Step six: rebar, edge distance, and where the columns actually land
Rebar in a farm shop slab helps, but as we’ve said in other guides, it doesn’t substitute for slab thickness and PSI when it comes to anchor pullout. What it does help with is preventing edge-of-slab spalling if a column ends up near a construction joint or expansion cut. When we position 2 post car lift columns on a farm shop slab, we’re looking for at least 12 inches of clear concrete around each anchor location, ideally more. Column placement dictates where the vehicles will end up in the bay, so we plan the whole workflow at the same time.
If the ideal column location lands on an expansion joint, we either shift the placement, saw-cut and re-pour a small pad, or use an epoxy anchor system rated for edge-distance-critical installs. There are options — this is not a deal-breaker. But it’s a decision that needs to happen before we anchor, not after. A farm shop with generous floor space usually has room to reposition; a converted milk-house or narrow machine shed sometimes doesn’t. We map this out on-site before ordering the lift so there’s no surprise when the drill starts spinning.
Step seven: parts, service, and the long-run relationship
A farm shop 2 post car lift is a 20-year piece of equipment, and the parts and service question is the last item on the checklist because it matters most in year five and year ten, not year one. We stock cables, cylinders, hoses, arm restraints, safety locks, and power units for every major brand we sell. When something needs attention — and eventually something will — we’re a truck drive from Dubuque, not a customer-service queue in another state. That matters when a truck is in the air and something feels off.
Farm shops we work with in eastern Iowa tend to appreciate that. The pattern of buying local, knowing the installer, and having the same team come back for a cable service or a cylinder rebuild is exactly how farm shops buy other equipment — tractors, welders, air compressors. A 2 post car lift should fit the same buying pattern. If you can’t get the guy who installed it on the phone in year eight, you bought the wrong lift. That’s the last box on the pre-purchase checklist, and it’s the one that separates a good long-run purchase from a marketplace regret.
