Once we start walking through exhaust and driveline access, wheelbase, and how many trucks need to get lifted per day, the conversation always circles back to one question: what’s actually under your tires right now? Why Exhaust and Driveline Work Changes the 2 Post Car Lift Math

Oil changes and brake jobs don’t ask much of a lift. Exhaust and driveline access is a different animal. You need the truck up high enough to work comfortably overhead, arms free, without a low-slung cross beam catching a tailpipe or a driveshaft in the way. That pushes shop owners toward asymmetric arm designs and taller lifting height than a typical passenger-car setup, and it also means the lift has to be rated for real weight, not just what fits on the spec sheet.

We’ve quoted plenty of 2 post car lift setups for shops running one-ton duallies, service trucks, and the occasional Class 6 straight truck, and the arm reach and swing radius matter as much as the tonnage rating. A lift that’s technically rated heavy enough but has short arms will leave you fighting the frame contact points on a longer wheelbase truck every single time. We ask about your most common vehicle before we ever talk model numbers, because exhaust and driveline work rewards a lift that was picked for your actual fleet, not a generic capacity number.

The Concrete Slab Is Where Most Installs Actually Get Decided

Here’s the part that surprises people: the lift is often not the limiting factor. The slab is. A 2 post car lift anchors into concrete, and for heavy-duty capacities we’re generally looking for at minimum four inches of solid, properly cured slab, and closer to five or six inches when you’re running higher-capacity two-post units for trucks. Older shop buildings around the Des Moines metro were frequently poured for lighter-duty use decades ago, and that thickness just isn’t there anymore once you factor in age and cracking.

Rebar matters too, but not the way most people assume. Rebar reinforces the slab against cracking under load, but it doesn’t replace thickness, and in some cases dense rebar mats can actually interfere with anchor bolt placement if we don’t know it’s there ahead of time. We’ve had customers tell us proudly that their slab is loaded with rebar, and that’s genuinely good news for durability, but it doesn’t mean we can skip a core sample or a thickness check before quoting the install. Any reputable installer should ask about your slab age, pour date, and any known reinforcement before locking in a final number, because moving or replacing concrete is almost always the biggest line item on the whole job.

Cost Breakdown: Lift, Freight, Concrete, and Install

When shop owners ask us for a real number, we break it into four buckets instead of one lump figure. First is the lift itself, which varies by capacity and features like asymmetric arms or adjustable height columns. Second is freight and delivery, which depends on whether you have a forklift on site or need us to arrange offloading. Third, if your slab doesn’t check out, is concrete work: cutting out and repouring a section, or adding a properly engineered pad, which can rival the cost of the lift depending on scope. Fourth is the install labor itself, including anchoring, leveling, and safety testing before we hand you the keys.

We’ve seen quotes where the lift and install came in reasonably, only to have concrete replacement double the project because nobody checked the slab first. On the flip side, we’ve had customers with a forklift on site and solid existing concrete who cut their total cost significantly just by skipping freight arrangements and concrete work entirely. The honest answer is that a 2 post car lift project’s final price depends more on your building’s condition than on which brand badge is on the lift. Get the slab evaluated early and the rest of the estimate gets a lot more predictable.

Lead Time and Scheduling Around a Working Shop

Heavy-duty shops don’t have the luxury of shutting down for a week. We schedule installs to minimize downtime, and that usually means a lift going in over one to two days depending on whether concrete work is involved. If we’re pouring new slab or a reinforced pad, you’re looking at additional cure time before the lift can be loaded, so we plan that stretch around your slower days or a slot where you can shuffle work to another bay.

Lead time for the lift itself varies by manufacturer and current demand, and we always give shop owners a realistic window rather than a best-case guess, because nothing frustrates a busy truck shop more than an install date that keeps slipping. If you’re planning around a seasonal push, tell us early. We’d much rather build in a buffer for concrete curing and inspection than promise a date we can’t hit while your bay sits half-finished.

Choosing Capacity and Clearance for a Truck-Heavy Bay

Passenger car shops can get away with a lighter two-post. A shop that’s regularly lifting duallies, service trucks, or box trucks for exhaust and driveline work needs to size up, both in weight capacity and in overall lifting height. We typically walk through your three or four most common vehicles, their actual curb weight loaded with equipment, and how high you need clearance to comfortably work under a driveshaft or exhaust system without stooping.

Ceiling height in your bay matters just as much as the lift’s max rise. We’ve had shop owners fall in love with a tall two-post design only to realize their building’s clearance wouldn’t allow full extension. That’s another reason a site visit or detailed measurement conversation beats picking a model off a spec sheet alone. A 2 post car lift sized correctly for your fleet saves you from working in a cramped, awkward position on every single truck that rolls into that bay for years to come.

Two-Post Versus Other Lift Types for Driveline Access

We get asked fairly often whether a four-post or mobile column setup would serve driveline work better than a two-post. For most independent and fleet-focused shops, a two-post wins on open undercarriage access, since there’s no runway or ramp blocking your view and reach to the exhaust and driveline components. Four-post lifts are great for alignment and storage but tend to obstruct the exact areas a truck shop needs open.

Mobile column lifts have their place for larger trucks that need to be lifted evenly at multiple points, but for a single bay doing routine exhaust, transmission, and driveline service, a properly anchored two-post is usually the more practical and more affordable choice. We’ll talk through the tradeoffs honestly rather than push whatever’s easiest to sell, because the wrong lift type for your workflow costs you time on every job afterward, not just money upfront.
